J Wongs Thai & Chinese Bistro Ratings and Reviews
J Wong's is an excellent find. Very pleased with the service from the moment of entering the door to departure. They are willing to work with diners on the menu options, knowledgeable and get it right. We had a couple of very picky eaters in our group and everyone was very satisfied. It was a pleasant evening. We will return.
My young adult son has been extolling the considerable virtues of J Wong’s for many months but I hadn’t had the opportunity to dine there until we decided to celebrate his birthday by having lunch. We ordered a couple of appetizers and an entree each. I have to say I was immensely satisfied with both the service and the cuisine. I hope to dine there again soon and often.
It was just ok. Our server was excellent. The food was not exceptional. We enjoyed the lettuce wraps. The soup came out very quickly and before my husband had a chance to even taste his soup our meal was served. All of the chicken in our dished tasted like it had been deep fried.
If you're looking for notable Asian food, this is not the place. I love Asian food. Salt Lake City is obviously not San Francisco, and J. Wong's exemplifies that. The service good, and the atmosphere was nice. If you're downtown, and want a nice quiet meal, this might be just fine if you're not looking for a food experience.
I have eaten lunch a J Wong's many times and greatly enjoyed. This was the first dinner
reservation. I thought our friend would enjoy because of the gluten free items (of which
there were not many choices on the dinner menu). But, we arrived early (5:45) and service
was great, we had a nice quiet booth where we could converse. The food was presented
beautifully. I had the filet mignon stir fry....while tasty, it was not my favorite dish (compared
to some of the lunch items I have tried). Restaurant is an easy walk to the Capital Theater,
so would recommend to anyone for dinner before a show.
The food was decent, Americanized Chinese fare, and as such, I had to see what their version of General Tso's Chicken was like. Again, pretty good, though maybe a bit over-priced. However, the pricing was standard for what is now typical in the Salt Lake foodie scene, where every entree needs to be $13 or more nearly everywhere you go.
My main problem was with the service. It was a slow Sunday afternoon, so the servers were not overburdened by any means. Our waiter led by recommending a sirloin dish, purportedly his favorite, which was, not coincidentally, the most expensive meal on the menu. OK, he needs to up-sell when he can, but when we declined, he was careless with our orders, preferring to remember them instead of writing them down. Sure, there were only three of us, but our selections, especially our rice preferences, turned out too much for his memory. He had to confirm three different times what we had ordered as we waited, which left us nervous, only to bring the wrong food to our table in the end. No surprise. But as we settled up at the end of our meal, I fortunately took a second look at our surprisingly large bill, only to find our server had charged us for the sirloin dish, along with everything else. My wife nearly paid for the whole thing. We left a meager tip as a message. The back of the house did their job, but the server undid their hard work by being sloppy.
We dined at J. Wong's recently. Ambiance is good & service is prompt as well. The menu looked really exciting with the Chinese/Thai options, but the food left us desiring more. The cashew chicken was dry & bland. The lamb racks on massaman curry was decent with the curry pulling the weight forward. Appetizers and desserts were meh.
Food was ordinary. We ordered according to what our waitress said were the most popular items. The curry chicken was bland. My friend ordered the house salad and left most of it. The restaurant is beautiful, however. If you don't care about the food and just go for the ambiance, it might be all right.
Enjoyed the lunch menu, very flavorful and fresh. Although our server Angie, was dismissive, almost to the point of rude. We did share our concern/experience with the manager/owner and he responded by making sure we were accommodated. As a result we may have seen a slight attitude change in our server, but still did not receive drink refills the after we asked. We think she couldn't get us out of there fast enough. So sad that a server sets the tone for your experience. We're in town for several more days and considering bringing back larger parties......going back for the food....hope the service is better.
This restaurant is in the Salt Lake Magazine's 25 best restaurants for 2015 so I was expecting a fantastic meal. It was good. Not "to die for" fabulous but we enjoyed the evening. The service was great and I think we will probably go back and try some different dishes. The salmon dish was by far the best of what we ordered.
Such a find for celebrating Chinese New Year! Brought my twin granddaughters (age 8) and they were so enthralled. And ate every bit of the food (fried red snapper, duck, dumplings, lo mein with vegetables, spinach, fried bananas, mango rice) and three pots of tea.
They want to go again soon...without the Lion Dance though.
Went here on the spur of the moment when the intended restaurant had a several hour wait. I have a gluten issue and one of the diners in our party has a severe seafood allergy. We notified our waiter of this prior to ordering and asked for recommendations. The diner with the allergy ordered the wonton soup which was not labeled in the menu as having seafood; the waiter also did not tell him that there was shrimp in the wontons. My friend found out about the issue after eating it and then looking up reviews that had been posted online about what was actually in the soup. The waiter just gave us an "oh sorry" as my friend was breaking out in hives (fortunately he is not as allergic to shellfish as he is to fish but it is still a severe allergic reaction). The manager was wonderful with the situation when we told him what happened and with us having to get quickly out of the restaurant. This error was after us getting the wrong rice and having to remind our waiter that we had ordered the soup in the first place. The food was wonderful though! Everything that we had ordered was delicious - lettuce wraps, general tao's chicken, beef and broccoli, and a thai dish with pork belly - was well received by everyone at the table. We would be willing to give them another chance as a girls' night out and leave the allergic boyfriend of my roommate at home.
Went in for first time after an early show on Sunday and it was pretty empty which was nice. Our server was super nice and suggested the pork appetizer which was a little unwieldy but tasty. The scallops and prawns in the dish I had were huge and the scallops were super tender but the sauce flavor was just okay. Overall it was a nice experience.
This place is so good i went twice in a weeks time . The food is the best asian food i have had here in Salt Lake Hands Down. Not only is the food good but they have great prices as well . You can ballout or you can eat good for less then 25 bucks . This is my New spot LOVe LOVE LOVE
Pretty setting. A very quiet Sunday night. Attentive service. Ate Thai small plates. Not really classic Thai and no hot curries. This is Fusion cuisine, so it's pretty but needs a kick of heat and more flavor. Individual dinner plates (no family style service) looked large. Will try the Chinese half of the menu another time...maybe.
Luckily the server told us we could order OLD menu items such as tangerine chicken. We were happy. The Pad Thai was so-so. I think that they should have left some of the OLD favorites on their NEW menu. Perhaps the only half full restaurant on a Friday night bears some credence to what I am saying.
My second trip to J Wong's. It is upscale Asian dining. We started with a small plate of pad thai - which is typically pretty pedestrian fare, but my 10 year old wanted it to share. I was the best pad thai we've ever had. Chicken was tender, egg was not rubbery. It came with a large prawn on top. Perfect! Our entrees were scallops with bacon and garlic (my, my - delish!) and braised pork belly with dumplings (fantastic). The place was virtually empty at 7 pm on Friday night. This is really a shame given the quality of food and the inventive dishes that J Wong's serves up. They even have free valet parking - which means there's no excuse why you shouldn't be eating there tonight!
The food was terrific! The wait staff was working very hard, not very polished but attentive and hustling, the kitchen was SLOW.....super over whelmed. Seems like they have no idea OR was coming into town. Lots of floor staff, good thing we were not a time table, but the food was terrific, from the fried ribs (delicious) to sticky rice to the roast half duck and everything in between! Over all a very good meal, and we will return.
The food was great as well as the service. The only negatives were that the egg drop soup was luke warm, and it's across from the Salt Palace so convention goers filled up the place and it was so loud that none of us to carry on a conversation. Outside of that, it was awesome!
