Enjoyed dinner outside. We had their special which was a Cornmeal Blackened Catfish. De-Li-Cious! Our waitress was great.
The food, service and music was excellent. Our server gave great recommendations for both drinks and our entrees and we had an excellent time. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great evening.
Pains me to write this, but the new management team is falling way short of the previous one. Reservations for a Saturday night outside. Took 35 minutes to get drinks served; waiter spilled them coming out to patio. Ordered the charcuterie board; arrived with three similar types of salami and a pile of crumbled goat cheese - but no crackers or bread. Asked for some and was told to pick up the cheese with the salami; we’re saving the pita for the customers who order hummus. Wha??? Paid our bill and left. Albeit they have struggled to keep staff (huge problem in West Michigan), since the previous chef left for another restaurant in town, sadly this one continues to decline.
We're very sorry that your visit was not up to par. Our timing was off for the night, which is unfortunate and something we are usually very good at. As you mentioned, it has been a struggle to keep staff on board, and that affected us. Our charcuterie hasn't had a bread or cracker this year, but after taking your opinion, along with a few other of our guests', we are adding one to the board. I hope that you'll be able to give us another shot so that we may be redeem ourselves. Thank you.
No Deja Vu
Background music was a bit strange. Everything from Stevie Wonder to Grateful Dead. Skirt Steak was very good. Market Catch fish-Yellow Snapper was good, not great. Poke was just ok. Dined there a year ago and had a Berkshire cut pork chop, probably the best I ever had. Fast forward one year, different chef, new management. Ordered the updated version of the pork chop with bulger wheat, kale, fig and raspberry reduction. Lightning did not strike twice. This dish was mediocre and way over engineered. Brussels Sprout and Soft shell crab appetizers were fair; a bit too spicy. Shrimp and grits were good. Fried green tomato BLT was also good. No longer offering wine flights which were also a highlight last year.
Thank you for dining with us. Our music is definitely an eclectic mix of everything from modern indie pop and chill-out classics to 80s covers and 70s classic rock, so we hope you heard at least one song you loved! I'm sorry you didn't like the Pork Chop, one of our most popular dishes; It's hard to compete with something you have such fond memories of. As for the flights, while we don't offer wine flights anymore, we do offer whiskey flights if that's up your alley at all. Thank you again!
We love fine dining and Kirby’s did not disappoint. We sat outside on a beautiful terrace. The food was phenomenal! The place was very quiet and intimate. We absolutely loved it. Can’t wait to come back !
We are so glad you enjoyed your evening with us. Can't wait to see you again! - Brett, GM
Ate outside - good food - excellent waitress; nice scene. Good music although the musician could have had a 'cleaner' look without the sunglasses, sloppy clothes, winter hat etc. Talented.
Thank you for the review and for dining with us! I'm glad you enjoyed your evening. - Brett, GM
We really enjoyed the unique cocktails here. The outdoor seating is very nice. The service was fun and great. The charcuterie board, as an appetizer, the bone in pork chop for dinner, and the Black Manhattan cocktail that I had were all fantastic. Recommend highly.
Thank you so much for the review of your evening! I'm glad you enjoyed the cocktails as much as I enjoyed putting them all together. -Brett, GM
Wonderful service, great food and great atmosphere.
They had wonderful entertainment that evening. The band was superior.
Very nice atmosphere, quite, a pretty setting, good service, attentive but not pushy.
This was a gem in tourist Michigan. The food was amazing and well plated. The drink menu was the most varied we have seen in our Saguatuck/Douglas, MI vacation so far. The pork chop was just as good as the owner-s picture. The charcuterie board was shaped like Michigan which is charming.
The outside of the house looks country, but the inside is very modern 80's. The music had great remixes of 70's and 80's plus modern songs. The inside chairs were very comfortable which is important if you are staying more than 1 hour. The bar area was adorable. This is a must do if you a are in the area. Open Table reservations were a plus.
We had a lovely dinner at J. Paul's. The Shrimp and Grits is fantastic! Very unique - served with a slightly spicy red sauce and grilled shrimp. Highly recommend it. My husband loved the pork chop. The service was slow but our waiter apologized. He tried hard to keep up and did provide good service.
Thank you for dining with us. While we strive to deliver a slower speed of service than most places in town so that you can fully enjoy your meal and surroundings, we never want you to wait too long, so for that, I apologize. I'm glad you enjoyed your dinner and we look forward to welcoming you again! - Brett, House Manager
We feared it would be crowded on a Friday summer evening, but we had our choice of tables. Great craft cocktail selection and well rounded food menu. We sat on the back deck which was peaceful and pleasant.
Thank you for joining us out back, we're so glad you enjoyed your evening! - Brett, House Manager
Excellent service, excellent dinner! Everything we ordered was delicious!
That's about as good as it gets! Thanks for coming out! -Brett, House Manager
Great staff food and atmosphere we will definitely go back
We can't wait to see you again! - Brett, House Manager
We were uncertain how J. Paul's would fare after the departure of the prior manager whom we really liked. However the food was great (thanks Trevor) and Brett (the new manager) was kind and attentive. The filet and the shrimp and grits (more NOLA than low country) were particularly yummy. Very low key on a Sunday evening, but a nice atmosphere. Doesn't seemed they've missed a beat with the changes and we look forward to returning.
Thank you so much for coming in and dining with us. I'm glad you enjoyed your visit and we are excited that you like what we've done with this beautiful old home. - Brett, House Manager
All great! Excited to have a good restaurant close to Lake Shore Dr. Recommend adding a vegetarian entree option to the menu.
Brett is amazing as the new house manager. Really like to hear what is vision of success for the Kirby is about. Travis is an extraordinary chef.
We had a beautiful night on the deck and will return soon!
Under new management. Has potential but not up to speed yet. Menu is too eclectic. Had a drink and left. Didnt stay for dinner. Chef canme out to talk to us. Very hospitable and knowledgable. I hope he makes it.
Thank you for giving us a shot! Hopefully, you'll try us out again, we'd love to have the opportunity to earn a few more stars on that review! - Brett, House Manager
Overall the experience was wonderful! They are still working out some kinks early in the saeson, but once they are ready, this will be the perfect patio dining experience! So much personality!
Thank you for your enthusiasm and support for us Casey!
Depends on the server, I imagine the experience would be better
We stumbled onto J Paul's at the Kirby, and I'm very happy we did. The historic B&B home, multiple window exposures, and strategically spaced tables creates a very appealing venue, which was supported by warmly friendly, professional service. J Paul's diverse and enticing menu was realized in interestingly complex and tasty dishes.
We're so glad you found us and thank you for the glowing review!
Drove past this place several times and finally decided to check it out. Glad we did!! Great vibe and decor in a mod-historic home. Chill music and very relaxed setting. Friendly, attentive service. Interesting cocktails & decent food. We had soft shell crab, shrimp & grits. Don’t miss this because it’s off the main drag, check it out!
Thank you Deb! A lot went into creating this special space, so we're so glad you enjoyed it! - Brett, House Manager
The best dining experience! We were so glad that they could accommodate the special dietary needs (gluten-free) of members of our party. The chef came out and talked to us and the waiter treated us as special guests! The tour of the grounds was beautiful! We definitely will return!
Thank you so much for coming out! I'm so glad that we were able to accommodate your group's gluten-free needs. We can't wait to see you again this summer! - Brett, House Manager
Loved it! Thank you for making our special night so enjoyable!
It was the night before New Year’s Eve, and we were in town for a few days. We had stayed here when it was the Kirby House many years ago. Having read that the B and B had been repurchased and refurbished, with glowing reviews on the food, we decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed.
We were initially seated right next to a huge party, that was very loud. Asking to switch seats was met with a smile and a new table further away. We had a delightful evening. Great service and wonderful food. A lovely evening overall. We will be back!
This is my second time here. The first was for a wedding dinner for 22 people and everyone loved it. We just went back to celebrate our one year anniversary and it was just as great!
Outstanding service and food. Generous cocktail pour. Very comfortable wine selection. Entrees prepared to perfection. Wish Indianspolis still had quality small independent restaurants of this sort.
This is our new favorite spot. We will be back frequently. The ambiance is terrific and the food was excellent. We also thoroughly enjoyed the staff and felt they were attentive and warm. This is a must try!
Food was absolutely amazing! Mindy is a great chef, and the pairings she chose for wines was wonderful! Quite a GEM of a place!!
The ambiance and food were very good. We have been here in the past and are never disappointed.
Porterhouse steak was very thin like a breakfast steak also was not hot and had no seasoning on it bland. The things that where good was the beer i had and the service. Will not go back.
Very pretty interior. Nicely renovated for old house. Modern decor. Easy parking. Great location. Quiet, upscale. Food was just average. Shrimp Fettuccine Alfredo had just 4 small shrimp, unremarkable sauce. Beet Salad was forgotten and brought after main course, but it was good. Servers were pleasant. First time dining here.
Modern gourmet dining in a 130 year old mansion... Everything was delicious and the wine spot on. There are seats and small tables all around the veranda, in case there is a wait for a table. Also has a gorgeous old bar area.
Came to this restaurant for the first time, to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Both of our meals were very good. We will definitely plan a return visit!
Steak was of marginal quality and overdone. $80 bottle of Arnold pinot noir was also very marginal.
Our second time here, great personal attention, creatively selected wine list by knowledgeable sommelier, comped birthday dessert, quality cuisine, quiet atmosphere in a Victorian B&B.
Love this place. Never a bad meal, great drinks and wonderful owners. Highly recommend the truffle fries...
