Loved it! Thank you for making our special night so enjoyable!
It was the night before New Year’s Eve, and we were in town for a few days. We had stayed here when it was the Kirby House many years ago. Having read that the B and B had been repurchased and refurbished, with glowing reviews on the food, we decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed.
We were initially seated right next to a huge party, that was very loud. Asking to switch seats was met with a smile and a new table further away. We had a delightful evening. Great service and wonderful food. A lovely evening overall. We will be back!
This is my second time here. The first was for a wedding dinner for 22 people and everyone loved it. We just went back to celebrate our one year anniversary and it was just as great!
Outstanding service and food. Generous cocktail pour. Very comfortable wine selection. Entrees prepared to perfection. Wish Indianspolis still had quality small independent restaurants of this sort.
This is our new favorite spot. We will be back frequently. The ambiance is terrific and the food was excellent. We also thoroughly enjoyed the staff and felt they were attentive and warm. This is a must try!
Food was absolutely amazing! Mindy is a great chef, and the pairings she chose for wines was wonderful! Quite a GEM of a place!!
The ambiance and food were very good. We have been here in the past and are never disappointed.
Porterhouse steak was very thin like a breakfast steak also was not hot and had no seasoning on it bland. The things that where good was the beer i had and the service. Will not go back.
Very pretty interior. Nicely renovated for old house. Modern decor. Easy parking. Great location. Quiet, upscale. Food was just average. Shrimp Fettuccine Alfredo had just 4 small shrimp, unremarkable sauce. Beet Salad was forgotten and brought after main course, but it was good. Servers were pleasant. First time dining here.
Modern gourmet dining in a 130 year old mansion... Everything was delicious and the wine spot on. There are seats and small tables all around the veranda, in case there is a wait for a table. Also has a gorgeous old bar area.
Came to this restaurant for the first time, to celebrate my wife’s birthday. Both of our meals were very good. We will definitely plan a return visit!
Steak was of marginal quality and overdone. $80 bottle of Arnold pinot noir was also very marginal.
Our second time here, great personal attention, creatively selected wine list by knowledgeable sommelier, comped birthday dessert, quality cuisine, quiet atmosphere in a Victorian B&B.
Love this place. Never a bad meal, great drinks and wonderful owners. Highly recommend the truffle fries...
Some dinners were very good and others were just ok. One had to be sent back. The tonic in my cocktail was flat. Everyone liked the capresensalad. Two meat dishes were overdone and dry. I’d give it another try but was a little disappointed.
We were in town for a weekend getaway. The restaurant from the outside is very lovely old home. The cocktails were both a disappointment. We both ordered the pork chop which was chewy and not very flavorful. Wish we would of picked a different place to eat.
One of our favorites. It has an urban European feel and an easy quiet place to dine.
I cannot say enough good things about J. Paul's @ The Kirby! We have dined here several times since the restaurant opened. It has always offered a nice, smaller menu of well-chosen items...favorites are the Radish Crostini, Truffle Fries and Tune Poke. This visit, I had the trout, which was the 'Catch of the Day' and it was stunning...prepared beautifully with zucchini from their own garden. Drinks are always well crafted and wine pours are generous. Very well-thought-out wine list. They had wonderful live music this past Friday evening and the atmosphere was definitely fun and vibrant! Housed in a beautiful Victorian mansion that has a wonderful, storied past. Highly recommend!
We arrived at the restaurant and while we were approaching the outside steps, the female bartender rudely ask us if we had reservations, which we did. She then tells us we better plan on waiting awhile. As we entered the building a nicer woman asked if we had reservations and told us not to worry she would have our table ready soon. Unfortunately we did not get a good first impression but our meal was fine. However restaurant was very noisy and bartender very rude.
Prob the worst restaurant experience ever. Ordered a very expensive bottle of champagne and the wine person popped the cork and a third of it wound up on the floor and table. She said, I barely touched it and walked away. To add insult to injury, it was not even close to being cold enough to drink. Fish was over cooked and tasteless. The Worst!!
We enjoyed the wine flights. The sommelier was very knowledgeable and took the time to describe each wine along with appropriate pairings.
The food was also outstanding. This is a great addition to our dining options in the Saugatuck/Douglas area.
Wonderful food and staff was very friendly, attentive and knowledgable. Ron was great!
Only 2 of the 6 of us were happy with our meal. Beside one other table, we were the only ones there. They knew that it was a special occasion, but really didn't do anything about it. We had a nice table for 6 and were the only ones in that room, so we could laugh and talk without interrupting any other tables. Duck was way over done, risotto was just plain rice not Arborio, the charcuterie was skimpy and didn't have the usual extras that go on, like olives or dried fruit or fig spread, linguini was nothing very special and quite tasteless. Wine pours not very generous.
One thing that was nice was that we could make reservations which is hard to do in this resort area.
Just the perfect dinner with good friends and family.
The Kirby is one of our favorite places in Saugatuck/Douglas. The menu is perfect with something for everyone. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. I love he wine menu and the service is great!
Menu looked great and was excited to try the food, however the execution was a little underwhelming. Risotto was rather bland, chicken was moist but the accompanying pasta dry and the burger lukewarm.
Wine selection was good value and the setting was very nice, unfortunately sat next to a very loud group of women.
Went for our anniversary; we weren’t sure if we needed reservations or not for a Sunday night but we made them to be safe. Possibly the best meal I’ve had in Douglas in the past 6 years!
It was understaffed, and too long a wait for suitable table for reservation. Our first experience was someone hustling out of the restaurant asking if we had a reservation. Sat at the bar, bartender was clearly under stress and less than convivial. Food was ok but needed more flavor profile. Went to Everyday People Cafe for drink/dessert, it was far busier but had excellent service and better attention to detail and to plating.
Good cheese and charcuterie selections (including amazing smoked duck) with unique wine selections but overcooked risotto, terrible gazpacho and improperly cooked cake, mixed with awkward service ensured we won't be back
Very sad. Second visit (first two years ago) Obvious change in management and operations. Ordered an appetizer and then left after it was delivered. Poor quality and presentation.
The Kirby is a beautiful, scenic space. The service was very good. Overall, the food was excellent. I gave the food 4 stars because one dish, the asparagus, was a bit lacking in flavor and the asparagus had the hard, inedible ends still on them. Otherwise, it was excellent.
A family member recommended The Kirby and she gave it such glowing reviews, that we couldn't wait to stop by. Our family tends to over exaggerate things, but in this instance Patty was spot on. The Kirby is charming. We were there at 5:30 and there was a steady flow of diners. The atmosphere was relaxed and the food was amazing! I do not believe you can order the wrong dish here, everything we ordered was delicious and so fresh. We ordered the lambchops, the beet salad, warm asparagus, whitefish pate and shared a cheeseburger. My husband claims this burger as one of the finest he's every had. He does not exaggerate:)
Please do not leave without tasting Mindy's creme brulee. It was creamy and smooth but not too sweet. Its been a few weeks since our trip to Michigan and The Kirby, and I am still thinking about my dinner. Enjoy!!
We were on vacation and needed an evening meal for our family of 5 adults. We tried to get into another local spot but the indefinite wait was untenable. I opened the Open Table app on my phone as was able to make reservations immediately for supper in 15 minutes. J Paul's welcomed us and served a great meal. All of us in the party ordered different food and were more than satisified. Our server was outstanding and accomodating. Will return on our next trip to Douglas with a bit more planning.
Nice place. Good food / value. Seating is a bit challenging. We sat in the middle of the bar...a bit awkward and required us to concentrate so not to be distracted by the patrons sitting at the bar behind us.
Mindy and her staff at J. Paul's @ The Kirby never disappoint! Five of us had a wonderful dinner, great cocktails and fantastic wines. Service from Teddy was top-notch. Atmosphere was very fun & vibrant. A must if you're visiting Saugatuck-Douglas!
Terrific meal and great service! We’ll be back!
Loved it! Loved Mindy! Will be going back!
Food was good. Went during the week and was very quiet. Only one other table was occupied.
An absolutely great place to dine. Very small restaurant (about 12 tables) located in a 100+ year old house with the top floors being a bed and breakfast. I had never even heard of the Egyptian (Middle East) appetizer Dukkah but it was amazing. I had a question about a delicate fruity sauce used on green beans. The staff brought the chef out to discuss it with me. A warm and friendly place with fabulous food. I would give it more stars if I could.
