Best Japanese restaurant Milwaukee ever had. It's a damn shame the owners of some mediocre Asian fusion restaurant are taking over the space.

This was the best dining experience ever. I always get the izumi platter. This time around the server actually took time to describe the fish. Thank you for doing that. I also just fell in love with the seaweed salad. I thank my server for that. I wish I knew the servers name. Unfortunately I do not recall her name. Thank you chef and server for a fantastic dining experience. I am in the industry. Please continue doing what you do. BTW the bartender is awesome... see you next time.

First of all - the fish was fresh and well-handled. If you are local and are looking for a good-tasking meal, I would have no trouble recommending this place. My problems were in a possibly overly-romanticed expectation of the omikase experience. I did some research on the Internet and found videos of omikase at various restaurants, with the chefs interacting with customers at the sushi bar, discussing likes, areas for exploration, one dish at a time, often with ingredients not on the standard menu. I found text reviews that described much the same thing - initial discussion with the chef, course-by-course, with hot courses, cold courses, maybe pushing the customer to try some things not similar to what they like, but things they had not tried before. We sat at the sushi bar, and watched the chef prepare maki and sushi and we were very patient. Then the waitress comes out and plunks down in front of me a platter - 10 different types of sushi from the regular menu, and 3 each tuna, salmon, and yellowtail sashimi, and a roll. Chef didn't say a word to us before, during, or after the experience. We could have learned so much even if he had merely narrated the things he was doing. But he spoke to others in English- it was not a language barrier. So, if you are going only for the food you probably will not be disappointed. If you are going so you can learn something, you might be.

Izumi's never disappoints! This is my husband and I's go to sushi spot! We go here every year or our anniversary, or when we want to treat ourselves... Sushi is fresh and SO delicious. Already looking forward to our next visit!
