We love this place. The food is amazing and we got a bottle of sake half price.. may be just a Monday deal. Lovely dining experience.

We fell in love with this restaurant! It’s officially on the permanent list for Chicago eats. Everything we had was delicious. The staff was knowledgeable about everything on the menu. Even able to go into detail on how certain sakes are made and which regions ingredients and dishes are from. Our favorite was the yellowtail tuna collar. Crispy skin and buttery flesh it was transcendent. The house made chicken meatballs and ramen were also delicious.

Food is very good and creative, but I just cannot justify the super small portions and super high prices. Really, it is absurd. $17.50 for a shot glass of sake? $8 for 4 shishito peppers? I would not go back for this reason.

Terrific Japanese comfort food striking a good balance between tradition and innovation. Excellent selection of sake, spirits, cocktails, and Japanese beer, too. Not a sushi place! If that's what you're looking for, go elsewhere (though they do have some sashimi selections)

We really reviewed our meal at Izakaya Mita this past weekend- the food was great but the service was a little lacking. We'd certainly return again but would get a different member of the serving staff ;).

New favorite Japanese restaurant.

I've eaten Japanese food in NYC, LA, Hong Kong and Hawaii. This may be my favorite so far. The variety and quality of dishes is amazing and everything was executed perfectly. The chef himself did the serving and during the sake flights, he gave us an extensive presentation on the different types of sake and brewing history. Great experience all around.

Woof. Where to start? We ordered and received drinks, but then our waiter didn’t come back to our table for 40 minutes. We had to flag down the hostess to ask her to send our waiter back over. We finally placed our order, but then waited another hour for food to come out. The table next to us finished, another group was seated and then received their food all before we received anything. When our food started coming out, the entrees arrived before our appetizers. Then not all of our food came out, and we had to ask for those items (probably 2 and a half hours after sitting down now). We eventually asked for our check and the waiter forgot about us again, so we had to ask again. It was busy when we first sat down, but by the end we were one of probably 5 tables, and they still couldn’t get their act together. At no point did they apologize for the delay or explain anything to us about our food other than to say there was a “mix up” in the kitchen. Food was good though.

First off, I do want to apologize for your dining experience this past Saturday June 22, While there is no excuse for us not providing top notch service, I do want to explain that we were very short handed as I went to the hospital for an emergency surgery, and we could not find any extra help last minute. Great as always. We seem to be some of the few customers who come for more for the food than the alcohol (though we do usually get a couple of flights of sake and this time wrote down all of the names so we can remember which ones we liked) and staff was happy to recommend some of the new things on the menu since the last time we visited (chicken meatball skewers, Tokyo abura ramen) and as well as getting some of our favorites (Kinoko Itame, Hamachi Kama) -- staff confirmed that we hit all of the highlights and seemed to enjoy how much we enjoyed the food.

What a great neighborhood spot! We were waited on by one of the owners, who in addition to having a great (very dry) sense of humor really knew his way around the menu—especially the sake selection. We plan on going back frequently.

Family-run restaurant where they come around every so often and talk about the inspiration behind their food with pride you usually only dream of seeing. The food is remarkable and diverse, the cocktails are perfectly balanced - the Tokyo Abura Ramen is one of my all-time favorite dishes. Potentially the best Japanese restaurant in Chicago.

This is a more traditional style Izakaya with small portions, like tapas. The food was outstanding, it wasn’t too loud or busy, and the service was great. It’s easy to rack up a large bill here.

Positives: food is really great and pretty unique

Areas for improvement:
-Cocktails were way too small
-Servers were all over the place. I think we got a dish that was meant for another table , and i saw the servers return to the kitchen with full plates multiple times
-Our food was brought out pretty much all once. Since they are small plates that are grilled, we were inclined to eat super fast before our food got cold. I would have much preferred to enjoy a plate , wait a minute or two , and then enjoy another one

We arrived and the restaurant was overbooked.
The food looked and smelled amazing, and the vibe was really great, but we stood in the doorway for 20 minutes before talking to a waiter (maybe the host called off?) and 20 minutes after that, we just decided to leave.

I get that Valentine's is probably a really busy day- but also a huge bummer for us. Again, the food looks great, it's too bad they can't get service together.

Food was great, servers great, but they overbooked for valentine's day. We wasted 30 minutes for a table that we had a reservation for. The couple that had a reservation for 15 minutes later waited 45 minutes after their reservation. Food took a long time after we got seated as well.
We're not worried about time so had a great time anyway, but that was a problem. Food really was very good and unique. Dessert was amazing (had mochi green tea ice cream)

Izakaya Mita is a wonderful blend of the traditional and the novel. It is authentic. It reminds one strongly of similar izakayas (bars) in Japan. But, it is also innovative. It is very much a Chicago restaurant. It will transport you overseas, even while it makes you glad that you are home.

IM is our choice for as near authentic Asian comfort/street food that you can find in Chicago. There is plenty there to eat if your mouth is not so adventurous but even more if it is! I won't attempt to single out any specific food items because I have probably positively reviewed them all before! Nothing misses at IM. Instead, let me rave (probably again) about their approach to sake. Without a doubt, IM offers the most extensive, most curated, most expertly selected broad swath of sake's in the city. Brian (rightly) approaches sake's as most do wines. He has expertise and a creative mind and you will benefit in learning a sake to love by his assistance because, if you have found wine that you like, you WILL find a sake that you like if you are properly guided...and Brian will add it to his inventory if you can figure it out together. In the past I have mentioned my love of minerality in sake, something that is VERY hard to find in the US. Brian listened and, voilà, Taka Noble Arrow was on the list the next time we visited...the best minerality that I have had outside of Japan. Another thing to consider is that IM is a family operated business. These are hard working people making their way in life by pausing to bring us great food and service by sharing their heritage! No matter what side of the aisle you sit on, that is as American as you get! They deserve our support. If we didn't live an hour and a half away, we would visit IM every week...and be broke...not because of their prices, which are very reasonable...but because we always eat and drink way, way TOO much when we visit! How can you not? It is ALL so good!

We made a reservation over a week in advance and when we showed up, we waited about half an our before we could even get a staff member to make eye contact with us. There were several other parties crammed in the doorway who also had reservations, none of whom could figure out what was going on. When I finally got a server's attention, she said they were at capacity and didn't think a table was going to be available for another half hour. I wanted to go here for a special occasion, my best friend had just moved to Chicago that day, and instead we ended up wandering around Wicker Park for 45 minutes trying to find a restaurant that would seat us - which was nearly impossible since at that point it was 8:30 on a Saturday night. I wish someone would have just told us what was going on or offered us a drink or something. I've been a server so I get when something's out of your hands, but no one would even acknowledge us.

The food is wonderful! However- worst service I’ve ever encountered. We waited 3 hours for our food. 3 hours. No one checked on us or apologized for all of the night’s mishaps (sitting there in the dark for 3 hours was just one). I loved the food! I just couldn’t believe the service. I’m guessing something extraordinary was happening with their staff that night and look forward to coming back again to try all of the things we didn’t get!

Came here during Restaurant Week. Brian, the owner, was super attentive and incredibly passionate about all aspects of our meal. On request, he gave an impromptu intro lecture on sake and sochu, a topic on which he is obviously expert. The prix fixe menu, which included signature dishes such as pork belly and black cod, were amazing and well matched with his sake pairings. Even met Brian's mom, a charming lady and similarly passionate chef. Totally plan on returning soon. So many sakes, so little time.

We were looking for a ramen place in the neighborhood and this place popped up on the list. Looking at the pics and reviews, it appeared to be a high end restaurant- at least price wise. When we went there, we were greeted enthusiastically by the owner- who obviously took pride in his restaurant and the menu. He spent 10 mins going over each item on the menu. We tried a variety of starters, small plates, sashimi and ramen. Everyone on the table was blown away by the delectable dishes. Everything was fresh, brought out promptly, tasted spectacular. Price point on the food was reasonable- not sure why it is marked as expensive on opentable. The decor was simple but tasteful. The ambiance was welcoming, the sake smooth, and the food insanely good! Recommend highly!
