I was very pleased with overall quality of the restaurant. Food, especially fresh sashimi was just excellent and other cooked dish was just as good. I will recommend this restaurant highly.
First time taking advantage of Tuesday’s all day Happy Hour. With the exception of their ono crab salad stuck to Happy Hour grinds and drinks. While wife and I have been here numerous times at various times of the night, we found it interesting how loud it was on this Tuesday night. Did not detract from great food, service and company, just kind of like a Chinese restaurant sort of noise level...happy, friendly conversations.
Arrived 15 mins early to my reservation and was told I was too early, which is fine but the place was half full. So we got seated and were allowed to order drinks until my actual reservation time. Instead we waited until 8pm my reservation time, then we were able to order drinks and appetizers. Drinks came in a timely manner, but the appetizers had taken an entire hour. We then waited patiently and ordered our main courses. Another hour passes to get the rest of our order, and to top that off we didn’t get all of it. After over a two hour dining experience I decided to just get the check and leave, instead of waiting another hour for the missing food. Terrible service, never have I experienced such poor service. Seriously, over two hours for two appetizers and two sushi rolls! Good luck if you dine here.
Very fresh seafood. Happy hours specials have a good variety
Service is attentive.
We’ve been there a few times and the food is consistently good.
Always a great dining experience! Mahalo Yoshi & Julie!
It was a busy night, but service was still good. Staff is very attentive and food is exceptional.
Service, food and ambience top notch as usual. Kinda disappointed that they were out of the Coedo beer as I had talked it up to our friends who were dining with us. No worries as the Asahi draft was cold, crisp and kept on coming. You can't go wrong with the Happy Hour menu of food and drink though we always order the salmon salad even though it's not on their Happy Hour menu. Service was efficient and not intrusive. Dishes were cleared promptly or as new dishes filled our table. Parking, if you come for the first seating, has never been a problem for us and even when we come later we've been able to find street parking. We enjoy introducing our friends and family to this culinary find on Young Street.
Great and fresh sushi.
Food is excellent! Great nigiri, sashimi and fish.
We had a wonderful time here! All of the sushi was incredibly fresh and tasty. I had a nigiri combo and it was really really amazing
Izakaya Matsuri feels authentic and homemade, unique and not comparable to most other Japanese restaurants. My wife is from Japan, I'm 3rd generation Japanese here in the U.S. Have never had homemade tofu until at Matsuri, and the Mana Katsuo Saikyo miso yaki grilled half of a fish was wonderful and tasty, perfectly char-grilled. My wife got her favorite Kimpira Gobo which you don't find just anywhere, and we only have it at New Year's. The sommelier Julie steered me to a microbrew from Koedo (never heard of it) with pumpkin squash in it giving it a hint of that flavor profile. Very nice, subtle, meaty taste. The place feels like a small hangout in Tokyo and you're transported a little bit from the everyday. Would definitely go back!
Amazing sushi and izakaya restaurant. Great quality tasty fish. And amazing service. The restaurant is in the back of a parking lot so not the most exuberant location but it reflects also in reasonable prices.
unfortunately they did not have some of the most common items you would normally have at a sushi/iazakaya restaurant. service, while not bad, you definitely need to call them to get anything - water, tea, ordering.
just be aware that though some of the items references that they are from japan, they may not be as we found out when it was served to us. wish they mentioned ahead of time so we had a choice whether to order it or not.
This place is amazing. We had cooked dishes and sushi/sashimi dishes. Everything was fantastic. The shima aji sashimi was outstanding. As was the toro sushi and the uni w/quail egg. The tempura was also outstanding. It was our highlight dinner while in Honolulu. I will definitely be back.
Servers need to be more attentive
The food is always excellent!
It’s a tiny restaurant so reservations are necessary. Party size is best at 6 or fewer. Staff is pleasant and helpful. Desserts selections are few but generous and delicious.
Went early during happy hour on a Saturday with reservations and it was not busy. Which was nice. Workers were very attentive and nice. A Small place which reminds me of Japan. Very cozy. Everything we ordered were delicious. Sushi, sashimi, oysters and uni was very fresh. The Ribeye was very tender almost like wagyu without the price. We also ordered a little more than we could eat but there was a lot of dishes we wanted to try. Will be back. Our bill was not to bad too, especially since some of our dishes were happy hour prices. We can’t wait to go again soon.
Incredible food, awesome service. Definitely have a reservation. You can not get better.
Food is excellent. Have been there several times and it's great every time. Happy hour deals are good with nice selection of Japanese beers.
The food was great, but the service could use work. Waitress had an attitude from the get go but got a little better as the night went on.
The food was great. The service wonderful. Will definitely be back here.
Awesome service, and wide variety of fresh sashimi. Kamameshi is the best ever!
Perfect date night spot. The food was delicious and the staff friendly. It didn’t fill up, so the noise level was low, but it’s a fairly small space to begin with so I don’t think it could ever get intolerably noisy. A very intimate setting.
Great service and fresh sashimi. We were lucky to get a spaced in the lot.
The food is delicious but the service is to slow.
Very fresh sashimi! The salmon mirugai was sweet and crunchy.
Good food and friendly service.
Excellent quality food and service as always! Mahalo Yoshi and Julie! :)
It was our first time at Izakaya Matsuri and we were impressed with the selection of food. Having been
to Japan numerous of times, we felt we were back in Japan.
The service workers (waitress and assistant server) did their best to meet the customers' needs. It was
very, very busy so kudos go out to all the staff!
The food and service was great! My son dropped his chopsticks and the server brought a new one before I asked for it :)
Good attentive service, lots menu selections
Awesome experience. We ordered Omakase Sashimi and Nigiri. It’s was amazingly fresh and creatives. On our Sashimi platter there was some shrimps head for displayed. We requested the chef to deep fried them. It’s was so crisply amazing. The shrimp flavor were bursting in our mouths. The rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned❣️
The hostess always knows your name and your favorite food.
We were the only party there for a Saturday lunch. Many don’t know they just started opening for lunch. Limited menu but very nice assortment to choose from. I’d go back again. Want to try dinner time too!
My go to neighborhood Izakaya
Loved the Hamachi Ponzu, grilled Moi, Asari Sakamushi and the sushi. Weird location but worth the effort to find it. I will be back.
My wife and I are always looking for new places to eat. After reading the Yelp reviews, I decided to bring her to Izakaya Matsuri to celebrate her birthday. We came early to make sure we could get parking. Originally, we did not plan to be there for Happy Hour, so it was a pleasant surprise. We decided to try most of the items on the Happy Hour menu like a tasting menu. We especially enjoyed the Oburo tofu and Eggplant Nimono. Surprisingly, I also enjoyed the Deep-fried Baby Sweet Shrimp after my wife convinced me to try it. After all that, my wife wanted to try the omakase sushi plate, but accidentally ordered the fixed 10 item instead (the menu confused her). Still, it was a good choice and we were glad she ordered it. We both look forward to coming back again.
Such a fabulous little place! The owners are a husband and wife team - the husband is the sushi chef and the wife is one of the servers. They are both the sweetest. The food was very yummy and fresh! The ambiance was perfect. The service was friendly and attentive. And they treated me to a delicious birthday dessert - the sake crème brulee and homemade mochi with ice cream - yum!!! We will definitely be returning!
Servers are not friendly but food is very good and price is not bad! Happy hour deals are good!
