Izakaya Juraku is a nice little unexpected gem. The price is typical Japanese, not the cheapest, can get expensive if you order a lot, but the lunch the wife and I had was great. Kevin S. was our server, very chill, easy to talk to, and knowledgeable with the beers. Speaking of beers, there's a ton of Japanese beers to choose from! They have a yuzu beer which was a nice easy drink to have for lunch. Kevin hooked us up too, free shots of sake and when our meal was done, he gave my wife 3 scoops of ice cream with 3 different sake accompaniments...delicious. Don't sleep on this place!
I really try not to write bad reviews of restaurants, especially now, given the challenges they are facing because of Covid. But I have to be honest here; this is one of the worst meals I’ve had in NYC.
First, the restaurant characterizes itself as an izakaya, but is really just a generic Japanese fast food restaurant. An izakaya is a Japanese, small, casual bar and snack establishment with a specific atmosphere, and this is not one.
Second, all food items were served in disposable plastic and paper trays with plastic spoons which creates a huge alight of waste. The restaurant claims that is because Covid doesn’t allow them to ‘afford real dishes.’ I don’t understand the logic behind that, but even if one takes the restaurant’s claim at face value, it still doesn’t make sense how this location cannot afford plates and silverware but other places can.
Finally, and most importantly, the food is extremely subpar and very overpriced for what it is. There are dozens of Japanese grocery stores in NYC where one can get food as good or better than this restaurant, at less than half the price.
While trying to be sympathetic to the challenges restaurants are currently facing, I really just don’t understand how an establishment can simultaneously serve mediocre food and can’t afford dishes or silverware, while drastically overcharging. I wish them the best and hope they can make it, but it will take a lot of improvements and adjustments. Until that happens, do yourself a favor and don’t bother spending your money there.
Just fine, but not impressive. Plastic utensils. Decent food but a little lacklustre. Will not be returning.
Disappointed that they served everything in paper plates and take out boxes. For the price you pay, I expected more than a take out experience. Service was good overall
Still using plastic. Best to order takeout
Great service and staff! Came here for lunch and it wasn't too busy but still a lively atmosphere. Food is authentic and typical izakaya fare. The drinks are what you come here for, large selection of beers! The staff and GM were so friendly and welcoming. Will definitely visit again next time I am in the city!
Incredible experience, excellent food, impressive beer selection, low price
A casual Japanese bar that's a great place to come with friends for food and drink. They had a lot of food options and we enjoyed everything we ate!
The experience is awesome! Highly recommended
The overall experience was awesome!
All the food I had are pretty tasty, fresh and authentic!
I love their skewers and the takoyaki is the best that I’ve ever had! I would come back again and definitely recommend to my friends!
(P.S. the yuzu flavor slushy is top notch)
Stumbled upon this restaurant while looking for a last minute dinner reservation. Will definitely be back! No frills with great food and a large beer selection.
Excellent food and service
Awesome experience !, Kevin has been great, food was amazing and the ambiance was so cozy!. We would highly recommend and surely will be back
really mediocre ramen, would not go back. the price was not worth the value at all
THIS PLACE IS SO SICK! get everything beefy, all beef dishes are insanely good
One of the best Ramen soups I’ve ever taste!
The food was authentic and truly delicious! It reminded me of my visits to Japan.
Delicious grilled skewers. Some cold dishes heavy on the oil. Overburdened servers with slow service at dinner hour.
Food came out pretty fast, cool setup, not too noisy, solid skillets
Great food and a relaxing place. Friendly chef/owner.
I would highly recommend Izakaya Juraku. The food was delicious, the drinks were delicious, and the service was great.
I cannot lie. From the pictures of what I saw on the website this place looked good.
But honestly it was AMAZING. Go here. have some beer and Nigori sake.
Its not expensive and worth every bite and sip.
Food was good and service was excellent, there’re tons of Japanese beers to chose from to go with fried foods, and yakitori. Delicious! We enjoyed the experience, will definitely going back again.
Four of us got a few appetizers and some ramen. We got the Black garlic ramen and the brown butter ramen. Some of the best broth if ever had in this city. Some of our beer tasted like it had gone bad but we didn’t care bc the food was so good
I had buta no kaku (very good), as well as skewers of squid, zucchini, and mushrooms (good). Liked them all. All served in disposable containers.
Also had the Kyoto Matcha IPA, which I thought looked very fun, tasted OK. It's way more green than my camera captured, with ingredients listing food colorings.
A long awaited family outing was made even that more special by our experience here. Good times and good food!
The vibe was great and while the food wasn’t bad at all, it was served on plastic/throwaway containers that made the overall experience lackluster. I suspect it has to do with Covid, but other restaurants are back to using real dishes and cutlery.
Great spot! Exactly what I was looking for, the food was delicious, staff was helpful. Would 100% recommend
Great! Good food, good service! Will definitely go there again.
Best izakaya experience in NYC. The service is always wonderful, and the beverage and food options are numerous and delicious! So glad this place is in my 'hood.
A wonderful place for a birthday dinner. I told our server Yoshi to take care of us, and he absolutely did! Pork buns to die for.
Great food, great drinks, great staff. Highly recommended.
I reserved a table for a part of 4 as a birthday “brunch” for a friend and the manager there was MORE than welcoming and extremely amazing! The food was delicious, the lychee and sake slushees were tasty, and we even had a special matcha-style-sake bomb that was to die for! 10/10 Will be returning again and would recommend!
Staff was very efficient and accommodating, our food came out fast and was absolutely delicious. Great beer selection and we all left stuffed!
I attempted to order a small beer which was clearly advertised on the menu but was told that I could only order a large beer. I simply wanted a small beer so the waiter went to ask his manager but the manager was not prepared to change his mind. What poor customer service - we shall never visit again.
Great food and HUGE selection of Japanese beers. The food was served quickly and it does operate like an izakaya. Will come again for sure.
Very attentive staff and awesome beer/sake collection. Definitely going back!
