We ate late on a Friday and the D.J. was spinning -- that should be a good thing, but the sound system makes things very tinny and high pitched toward the back of the restaurant. We had a bigger group or we'd have moved to the bar :) Still, can't beat a spot that takes a 10:30 dinner reservation and the food is amazing.

This restaurant made me happy in every way a restaurant should. The food was well-presented, brilliantly made, creative and the overall experience was just great.

Our server was friendly, helped us picking the right items and the right order and was also always there when needed without being there all the time.

Will definitely visit again once I am back in Washington.

This place is alright if you have never actually been to an Izakaya. Our waiter was stretched thin, trying to attend to 7 tables so I don’t fault him. The food takes forever to come out. The price isn’t worth the quality— yakitori is the crown jewel at most izakayas but here it was wildly unimpressive. Oddly, the best items on the menu are the catfish karaage and the grilled okra. Still this is one of the better Izakayas in DC, sadly.

The food stands out as absolutely delicious and the service was excellent. We will continue to come back to this jem. The only downside is that sometimes it can get a little cramped as they seat guests "European style" with tables VERY close to the other. This makes it awkward when you need to get up from your table as you're forced to either shove your front side or back side into the other table's space.

$8 for 1/2 an avocado, that should be all I need to say. Lacking some of the more staple Izakaya fare such as a better selection of skewer goods. Cacio e Pepe udon was all cut up into short chicnks this lacking the consistency you’d expect from a undo dish. The foods were honestly mediocre at best, the only dish in my opinion that stood out was the miso salmon and that one was playing it very safe. The mentaiko in the spaghetti was a bit overpowering the rest of the dish that other flavors were lost and thus lacking balance in the overall flavor. Both of the grilled beef tongue and the nira reba were overly salty. Given how it came highly recommended by several people I know, I find it highly overpriced and seriously...... no ramen if I made a reservation!?

Izikaya is a great melding of Japanese and gourmet in a small plate format. The portions are decent size and prices are not crazy expensive. Our group of 4 sampled the specials as well as a number of menu regulars recommended by our server (thanks Isaac). We particularly loved the artichoke special and the grilled avocado (so smoky). The beef tongue was an interesting mix of tender and chewy. Chicken Kara-Age is better fed to the kids (think tempura tenders), but overall very good and interesting flavors. Complimented by one of the most diverse sake lists and Japanese whisky menus, this place is definitely going on our "must-return" list!

We had been wanting to come to Izakaya during our next visit to DC and we are glad we did. The food quality is good and the flavors profiles pleasing to the palette. What stopped us from providing a full recommendation is stems from the staff forgetting one important aspect/reason why we choose to dine at Izakaya. Our 9 year old daughter is fascinated with Japanese culture so for part of her birthday celebration we wanted her to experience some foods from Japan and also celebrate at the end of the meal. Although we did make a request when booking our reservation that we wanted a small celebratory acknowledgement at the end of our meal for our daughter’s birthday, we instead only received a check so we went to Magnolia for dessert which was excellent. Otherwise our visit was as expected.

We ordered several dishes. The chawanmushi was the highlight. It had this amazing silky texture and the umami flavor was incredible. The sake I ordered had a hint of smokiness which I recommend. I also recommend the caramel desert.

Basically Japanese tapas. Small plates perfect for sharing among 4 people per dish, enough for at least one bite per person. Rocky Balboa, hotaru-ika no okizuke (not my favorite, bitter), pork and Brussels sprouts, chicken kara-age x2, burrata, grilled okra x2, grilled zucchini, grilled beef tongue, grilled tako x2, pork belly onigiri x4, and one of each dessert (there were 4). Ordered 1 bottle of sake and 2 other drinks. Just the right amount for 4 people. Favorites: grilled tako, pork and Brussels sprouts, grilled beef tongue. They were out of the grilled hotate and catfish kara-age :(

I've been going to this restaurant off and on for the last 4 years. The last menu change was pretty underwhelming. I miss the crab croquettes and the 3 versions of the onigiri dish! Overall, it was a nice evening, but I probably won't be back again since my favorites are off the menu.

It sounded great on paper but the food was flavorless. We could not understand how that was possible but somehow they made it so. And we ate from all parts of the menu. For example, the catfish was good but the so called pickled ginger mayo sauce was dull. If you had not told me it was pickled ginger I would never have known. The rest of the food was meh. The service was quick but for our tastes, the waiter was a little too chatty.
