Ivy at the Shore
The Ivy’s tropical counterpart Ivy at the Shore offers the same delicious food plus icy island drinks, a 12-seat bamboo bar and surfside view. Don’t miss the sunset over the Pacific with a pineapple daiquiri or two.
The only 5 star is the ambiance, but the food, service, value and other intangibles just aren’t worth it. The food and drinks are way too expensive.
Waited 1 hour for our table
Family Valentines dinner for 4 at 8pm. As we arrived there was a line out the door— just to check in. Once in the door - it was wall to wall people- those waiting to check in, those who had checked in but just crammed in around the hostess stand, those crammed in the tiny bar area trying frantically to get a cocktail. It was sheer chaos. We finally sat at 9- had a lovely table . This isn’t their first rodeo- but boy did someone ever get that wrong. No apologies, no complimentary champagne anymore- which would have been a nice touch since the bartenders were so busy you couldn’t get a drink while waiting.
They overbooked in the worst way. Crammed extra tables together and had a line 20 deep just to check in. It was hot, loud, way too crowded and stressful. Not a nice way to spend Valentine’s Day. Should have poured a glass of champagne for their cranky customers.
Last time we were here, about a year ago, we felt the food was mediocre and the prices exorbitant- probably to take advantage of unsuspecting out-of-towers. We thought that maybe for a special occasion (Valentine’s Day), in the neighborhood, it would be ok. This was probably the singularly worst, most expensive meal we’ve had on the west side. Bland, old-school cooking, poorly prepared, small portions, at over twice the price you’d expect from an ok restaurant. This place is an unmitigated insult to our community, and I fear it takes advantage of a long-past reputation and gives Santa Monica a bad name.
We have been coming here for over 30 years! And I know Valentines Day is a biggie. BUT, we arrive at 6:30 for our 6:30 reservation and are greeted by a stone faced hostess and told is will we 15 minutes to be seated. 30 minutes into our 15 minute wait we are seated. And there is no music. They have now put so many table closely together that people are holding their drinks to make certain no one knocks them over as they pass. The bar is so crowded that there is almost an altercation because of pushing. Meanwhile the drinks and food are very good! But in clearing some dishes, the server knocks my wine glass to the floor. It takes 10 minutes for someone to come and clear the mess and I use the light on my phone to help or they would have missed several sharp pieces of glass. AND no one offered to replace the wine that they spilled at $20 a glass. Then it took ten minutes to get our check and pay. I expect a better evening from a pricy spot like the Ivy at the Shore.
Valentine's Day dinner at Ivy at the Shore was a zoo. We sat in the outside room, and it was very crowded and extremely loud. Food was not as good as I remember. Crab cakes were very ordinary. Sword fish was good, but not great. The noise level and the crowding of the tables really detracted from the experience.
For Valentine’s Day, rather than having dinner in the lovely environment we expected from Ivy, they changed the entire restaurant seating into tight rows of side by side two tops to pack as many tables in. As a result everyone was cramped at their tables, far too close to each other, I was too loud and the service was horrible because the waiters had far too many two-top tables to attend to and very restricted space to get to everyone. Greedy and tacky trick to play on loyal patrons.
I was very disappointed with my grilled vegetabe salad-it was tasteless. But, most appalling, was the mimosa. I cannoT believe that Taittinger champagne had juice added to it, so they could charge $25 each!! Taittinger should be served on its own and savored. I had no idea that it was Taittinger until the waiter brought the check! Shame on Ivy!
Great service. Fantastic view!
Ivy at the Shore is always excellent!
Beautiful restaurant with attentive staff and lovely food, we always make sure to have a meal here on every trip to Santa Monica
They used to have a nice touch by offering a glass of Champagne ,upon entry, I miss that little touch! Are there new owners things emend different . It was really noisy too. Don't think I will go back on a Sunday!
Ice cold room no heating
The Ivy at the Shore is a predictable dining experience. Food is very good. The staff is sometimes undermanned and thus, mistakes on orders occur.
Birthday brunch for my friend by the beach! It was beautiful.
It was not the same as in the past. No greeting with sparkling wine, and fewer flowers around the restaurant and on the tables. The wait staff was not as friendly and some had attitudes. They did not serve vegetables with the fish as they have in the past, but we’re more than willing to sell them to you separately. They cut back on the desserts on their birthday plate and did not give you a chocolate cookie to take home. Not upbeat and fun anymore.
Love it always return , it is consistent and great!
A classic standby. Sit outside. Grab a gimlet. Butter up that warm loaf of wheaty dark bread. Order some yummy calamari and fresh guacamole. Ask for some fresh tortillas. Try a way-above-average crab cake with one of their wonderful salads. The Daily Specials are always attention-grabbing and really special unlike so many places. I miss the profiteroles from the dessert menu!!
Great food, service and ambience - a great night
I had a great time! The food was great and the ambiance was great. It was a fun mother daughter brunch day. The cups and coasters were adorable. Thank you!
Drink too strong to enjoy. Food had good taste but presentation lacking a little. Would like decor to be more like the other location. More flowers everywhere would be nice. No view of the beach. Beach is across. Short walk.
As compared to the Beverly Hills location, it didn’t deliver. No champagne or cookies and I found the food to be bland.
We been coming to The Ivy for 30 years! The last couple of times my family had noticed a decline in their food quality . We figured they may have had an off night or 2. We have always admired the roses they place on the table and their attention to detail. We decided to go again to celebrate my husbands birthday with our family. I ordered the cake a week before from their bakery. Cake was delivered to their restaurant as promised. We went with a new cake as the other cake we normally get and love they could not do in a smaller size.
We arrived at dinner and were seated and all went per usual. Our waitress was very sweet and let me know our cake had been delivered.
Everyone ordered their usual favorites and the dinner began. The fried chicken was dry and greasy as were the fish and chips. Normally, this is one of their specialties and cooked to perfection. No one said a word at the time, as all were enjoying just being together.
The cake came with the candle and we all sang and it was delivered with ice cream and hot fudge.
The new cake I ordered ended up having nuts and was served almost frozen. It was not good, but again no one complained as we just wanted to have fun.
We ordered the Apple Tartin, and that very good!
We even gave a piece of cake to an adjoining table, as no one wanted to bring it home.
In times past, we were offered a glass of champagne and given cookies at the end of dinner.
Neither were done this time.
Upon leaving dinner, my Mom mentioned to me about the chicken and was really upset about the cake, and said I should call them the next day and mention something
Here is where I’m upset!
I called the restaurant and Richard the owner called me back, and he told me I was absolutely ridiculous in my complaints and that I should take them off my list and never come back again!
Not once did he apologize or try to make it better!
I am still in shock and it makes me sad, that after all these years, it had to end this way! Bad business !
Always a great place to go. Great food, great service, nice and laid back but of course it can get loud when completely crowded. Go during the week. Also, kind of ridiculously expensive compared to similar restaurants
Great place to celebrate a special occasion. Best lobster salad!
Loved it all. Everyone so great ! Flowers magnificent !
New Years and it was fabulous as usual. Love it and Juan is the best.
Marcy and Dale
Excellent service and fabulous food. This is a perfect restaurant.
Was so lovely. It reminded me of Sorento Italy
Wonderful brunch! We sat in the “garden room” it was so pretty full of bouquets of gorgeous roses cozy chairs with pillows and lovely place settings — perfect place for a holiday/birthday brunch. The service was top-notch and the food was good. I highly recommend It and we will definitely go back!
I was disappointed in Ivy by the Shore after having been to The Ivy on Robertson. They have a lot of cute little extra nice things they do at the BH location that ivy by the shore refuses to do. Also my server walked away in the middle of taking my order to go fix some one else’s order. Very disappointing.
Price fixe menu was way too $$$ and they messed up 2 simple salad orders. They sat us at a table by the door that had a terrible draft. $700 for 5 people. Basically on the price fixe a steak was the same as a salad. Ridiculous. We will break our 5 year tradition of Christmas Eve dinner here after this experience
Great Christmas Eve dinner!
Bit disappointed with food. Dessert was way too sugary and soggy.
There were not the abundance of roses because of Christmas.
Still love the ambience and light! Will return another day!
It had been a long time since I went to Ivy at the Shore, and boy was I disappointed upon my return. It was loud, the prices were hilariously inflated and the resulting food was "meh" at best. The service was slow, which wasn't the wait-staff's fault; there were too few people working the floor. I'm officially done with Ivy at the Shore.
Great spot with very good food but they had music drowning out any chance of conversation— ask them to turn it down— twice— they refused
