It had been a long time in between visits to Isa and I was impressed with the caliber of the food and service since it's been in the neighborhood almost as long as I have lived here. My 2 friends and I found the service to be very attentive and the happy hour is great value. The prix fixe menu was our choice and not only was it great value but as our server explained, the portions were perfect for a party of 3 so we were able to sample 9 plates which were a treat. The food was fresh and well balanced mixes of textures and flavors. We had a wonderful dining experience. Thanks to the Isa team for a lovely evening. Will definitely be coming back soon.
Food was great. Service was not. Took over 15 minutes for anyone to come by and get a drink order then after the food was served no drinks be ever came back. Had to grab someone walking by to get the check. This was 20minutes after finishing our meal and drinks. Disappointing.
Every time we eat at ISA I renew my affection for this restaurant: The food is interesting and cooked with skill. The service is professional, competent and at just the right level assertiveness. We had the $34 three-course menu and that is a bargain not often found in San Francisco. We will return again and again
We had an amazing time at Isa tonight. The patio is beautiful with fairy lights and is heated on a cooler fall evening. The sea bass and paella were incredible and our server Dean was absolutely wonderful. Excellent spot for a date or special dinner with friends! Would definitely recommend!!
The night started great up until the waiter informed us that the food will not be coming out together. Also that we should order more entries than what is needed because we will be sharing. WHAT!!!! The food was mediocre, and if you order something that one of your party doesn't like their out of luck. This is the worst concept that I've ever experienced? There were 4 in our party and 3 of us wanted a seafood dish, the 4th doesn't care for seafood so she ordered meat. Each dish of seafood came out first, about 10 minutes in between each one. Our poor friend just sat there until here dish was ready which was about 30 minutes after the last seafood dish. I do not recommend this restaurant and their concept. I will never return. Maybe if there are only 2 of you it might be ok. But for a large party it sucks.
I love Isa! BF & I have been coming here for the past 7 years, starting with one of our first dates here. since then, we default to Isa when we want to do date night or special occasion (valentine's day) and get too stressed out about finding a venue. Isa has never failed me- with one exception of a rude waitress, but I no longer see her there. Their food is ALWAYS consistent and their service is always great. Recently this year, we started bringing our family and friends to share this little gem and they all love it!
Great food, disjointed but well meaning service.
We had the scallops and the spaghetti with truffles. Both dishes we very good. In fact, we liked the spaghetti so much we ordered it again. The spaghetti portion was a tad small, but boy was it good.
We were effectively waited on by the entire restaurant staff. In theory, that could be nice but in practice it was extremely disjointed because there was no communication between the servers. For example, there were two people working the host stand who told us completely different things. Then we placed order with our waiter and over the. course of the next 20 minutes 3 different people asked if we were ready to order. Numerous people checked on whether we were happy with the food, but nobody filled empty water cups. All of that being said, the staff were very nice and I think are all probably individually fantastic servers, they just need to up their communication game.
Wonderful overall experience. We got seated on time and they brought water and bread right away. Sevice was a little to attentive but that's better than the other way around.
We had foie gras which was excellent. We also had the tasting menu with truffle based risotto. Superb.
We struggled a bit to appreciate the family style way of serving the food because in other similar restaurants, customers may opt to have courses served simultaneously if they don't want to share. In this case, it felt like the chef/kitchen does so to make their work easier (i.e. a dish comes out when they are ready) versus accommodating the customer (i.e. dishes come out so diners can eat their choice at the same time). So unfortunately, my husband ate his main course before I got mine. Not so fun.
Isa is always our favorite spot and the food never disappoint us however this time the serving service wasn’t great. We had family members from Iowa visiting us and we want to show them the good restaurant. So we took them to Isa. We were group of 4. The appetizers came different timing almost 15-20 min apart. Our main courses came different timing too to cause all awkwardness. My husband‘s dish came on the table first and when he finished his dish, 3 of us still didn’t see ours and it was weird to watching him eating most of the time and felt hunger in our stomachs. 2 main dishes came about 5 mins later (same dish order) after my husband finished his. Then another 10 minutes for last dish for another family member. We didn’t share food together, so we simply stare others’ food and feel our stomach is grinding to protest. Not sure what happen that night at the kitchen. For Ramsey Gordon, serving main dish food at different timing means failure: all dishes shall come up together. But Isa is not master chef or Hell’s Kitchen or Michelin star restaurant, so maybe should be compare to that level. But it will be nice to have all food come up together for the group to avoid awkwardness and watching people eating.
We were there for my friend's birthday. Waiter was great, food was very good overall. We had scallops, duck, paella - all delicious, but thought fois gras was a little undercooked. Our waiter made a nice fuss of my friend with a candle in her desert. Would definitely recommend.
Isa's food was as good as the last time we were here. The Prix Fixe menu is a good deal, with multiple appetizer, entree and dessert options, all of which we tried were very good. The waitstaff was also very relaxed but attentive (they previously were attentive but had a script of sorts explaining the chef's concept of the dining experience and that he discouraged a la carte menu surfing, which of course we did.
I've been to Isa three times now and had a ton of fun each time. We've hit the happy hour so the mixed drinks are 5 bucks. The enclosed back patio is festive and lively without being noisy. (The interior space is more formal feeling and doesn't attract me.) The food is creative and very well prepared, very tasty. The service each time has been excellent. They encourage their guests to share the dishes so you get to try many tasty morsels. It's very fun for a group!
I always had a really pleasant experience at Isa, and have been dining there since they opened. This time, I brought my dear friend who traveled far to SF. I wanted her have a relaxing evening at Isa. The waiter who served us is not attended to our table. I requested Lemmon with my water twice but never came. I "fly by" and " dump" a glass of white wine I ordered on my table. The glass almost fell.
He never bothered came back to ask how was our dining experience.
The food was really excellent. The crab salad had chunky pieces of crab meat from the pincers. The halibut fish and seared scallops dishes were so flavorful! Waiters were very friendly and they were so helpful with their recommendations and answering questions we had. I want to visit it again to taste the roasted lamb and maple leaf farm duck breast.
