Great food in a lovely setting! Recommend the chef's special
Great ambiance. A limited menu, but food was carefully prepared and served.
Iron Gate is a must for a date night. We only had 2-3 meals in the DC area, and I am thrilled this was one of them.
Beautiful ambiance, excellent service and delicious food. If you’re ready to venture back into the dining world, this is a fantastic way to do it.
Deliciously and thoughtfully prepared courses, the mackerel, oysters and sausage gnochi was all excellent. Our waiter was great, we loved his wine recommendations. The patio was romantic. Will be returning!
Amazing food, Amazing service and fantastic ambiance!!
It was not the Iron Gate of my last visit 2 years ago. The food was good. Very limited menu and I thought the chef’s table was a strange combination of food and I didn’t think they necessarily went together. And we were a party of three and they only offer the chef’s table for even number of people which I thought was not patron friendly. Our service was the usual great quality. I would like to see them back to pre pandemic menus.
First time there in a long time. Great setting and food. But disappointed with so few menu choices.
Amazing, loved sitting under the canopy. The ambience is wonderful, the service was good and the food was delicious!
Every dish a home run. The service is attentive and efficient. The ambience is nice, except we showed up in the middle of a cold snap and they’d already put all their heaters in storage!
One of our very favorite dining experiences. An absolute must.
Possibly one of my best dining experiences ever. The outdoor atmosphere was delightful, under a grape arbor, and was protected from rain. The family table option offered a number of options, all delicious. Service was friendly and attentive. It is pricey but worth it.
Great for any occasion. Talk with Erin (?) the sommelier.
One of the best places I've been at in D.C.
A hidden gem. Great ambiance on the covered patio, noteworthy attention to detail and delicious plates. Highly recommend!
Overall a nice experience however the tasting menu was a bit disappointing. We got cesar salad, rice balls that were pretty average. Wine selection was great. Ambiance was lovely. Next time we won’t do the tasting.
It’s changed from our last visit. I looks like iron gate lost all its good servers. The service was terrible and we automatically got a 22% service charge. The server deserved 10% at best. DC has a lot of great restaurants and I won’t be back to iron gate.
My family and I had a wonderful time here. The staff was so accommodating to our allergies (thank you especially to our server, Victoria)! They even surprised me with a special desert to honor my graduation! Everything we ate was absolutely delicious and we can’t wait to come back again.
This was an anniversary gift for my daughter and son-in-law. The service was outstanding in arranging for the dinner, and they enjoyed it very much.
Was very hot and uncomfortable outside. Some fans would have helped move the air. The food was nice but not many options for brunch / lunch. Our server was wonderful, he was friendly and funny.
It was our anniversary, which I had noted when making the reservation. We enjoyed the chef’s table option and loved just seeing what they brought us for each course. Everything was delicious! My only quibble was that I found the cacio e Pepe a bit bland (but my husband thought it was fine). The ambiance was was wonderful - such a picturesque setting! The service was excellent, including an interesting and informative chat with the sommelier! The evening ended with a special chocolate dessert they brought us that had “happy anniversary” written in chocolate ganache. So special!
Every taste of Spring and so many attentive and special touches. They also made sure to accommodate the allergies at our table (removing pine nuts, sharing a different app etc.) Octopus was amazing!
Great service and great food. A wonderful evening.
The place has lovely ambiance, and is a perfect setting for a cool summer evening.
The wine list is also diverse -with great Greek Options.
Whatever you do, however, DON'T ORDER the chef's menu. It's carb heavy, protein light, the salad is a plain ceasar option (with an octopus salad), and the entree we got was chicken legs on a plate with way too many fingerling potatoes.
I left feeling like I'd gotten too many appetizers from Olive Garden, and ended up paying 10x the price.
Stick to the entrees, order wine a la carte, and you may fare better.
It was a weekday when we went for my birthday and everything was great. It was our first time there and the server was awesome - super informative and helpful in describing the dishes and helping to narrow down decisions. The food was all delicious and the covered patio was so intimate and romantic. They had a unique extensive wine and liquor list. There was a little longer than usual lull between when we received our first course and second course, but we would definitely go back again!
We celebrated our 42 wedding anniversary at Iron Gate. We loved our experience! The setting was perfect for our weather perfect evening. We appreciated the lovely complimentary anniversary chocolate dessert . It was such a lovely surprise. Our service, the food, the ambiance were fantastic! We would definitely recommend this lovely restaurant for any special occasion or just a lovely outdoor dining experience!
Very nice outdoor patio area. We ordered the chef’s special menu and it was very good. That being said, it had a lot of bread and pasta and very little vegetables and protein so overall we were a bit disappointed in the composition of the overall meal. We should have gone with the a la carte menu for a better meal.
Absolutely fantastic experience! The back patio is shaded and beautiful. They did a good job of spacing out tables so that you don't have to worry about feeling crammed together. Our waiter was fantastic and did a great job of recommending drinks based on what we liked and what we were eating. The food and drinks were all incredibly delicious. We left full and happy :-)
Ambience and service was good. Food not as good with check of $200 for two people.
We celebrated here with friends-our first restaurant since pre-Covid. I can’t believe we never went here before. Food was excellent. We did the chef’s tasting. The only complaint was that the steak was a little too rare, but tasted great. Everything else was top notch. Their Manhattans are a must. I will say the first and second course arrived within minutes of each other, but they didn’t rush us out of there. We will be back.
The waiter greeted us when we were seated outside and told us we needed to wear our masks each time a wait staff was at the table. All wait staff wearing masks. So each time they delivered food, picked up items, asked if we needed anything, we needed to stop our conversation, put on our mask, and then respond. Wow. Wow. What an intrusion. As a health care provider, this is overkill. The wait staff was protected by their masks and the fact that we were outside. There is no way we could have given COVID to the wait staff. Next, the waiter kept asking are "we" ready to order, do "we" need something, how are "we" doing. Really? I was dining with three of my friends. WE did not invite the wait staff to be a part of our table. Using "we" is offensive. Now to the food: uneven at best. The blessed wait staff served a complimentary appetizer which was delicious until you got a bite of the clumps of salt on the cracker used to eat the appetizer. It was like a lottery--you never knew when you would win the excessive salt bite that would then ruin your taste for the next bite of the dip. And speaking of lotteries, the croutons in the salad were the same thing--I bit into one that brought tears to my eyes because it was doused with something very hot. Other croutons were fine. Or the farro salad--another bite of something very very hot. Did they forget to mix things after adding spices?? The meat was okay--truly did not like the taste. The pasta was cute--twisted like candies--only they forgot to cook the damn thing! The pasta was tough and undercooked. Yuck. Their focaccia bread was heavenly. I asked the waiter to wrap up the three pieces we didn't eat and he promptly discarded all of them!! The carrot cake was delicious. Why was it served broken up into little pieces? Did you think we were unable to cut our own cake? How Iron Gate has changed!! You seem to be focused on chic display and not on the quality of food. Won't be back until you do...
They offered us the worst table in the house for starters. The wait staff was a little clumsy. A couple of the plates were excellent but overall I would say very overrated for the price
Super accommodating with my celiac disease. The food and drinks were divine and our alder we made us feel special!
What a great experience! Their food is divine & the staff is very attentive. For my birthday, they brought out homemade ice cream. Lovely spot!
Iron Gate is a gem tucked away in the middle of downtown Washington. The wait staff was very friendly, attentive, and knowledgable, which always makes or breaks the dining experience. Per our request, we were seated on the patio under the lovely wisteria. We selected al la carte items including our favorite the asparagus with smoked salmon salad sprinkled with wonderful flavors and textures. Other favorites were the mini lamb meatballs and the gnocchi. The focaccia bread was delicious too. Since we noted it was our anniversary, our waitress brought out a dessert with Happy Anniversary written across the top and two glasses of champagne, which was very generous and fun. In addition, after signing the check, there were two cookies wrapped to go. It was a lovely evening and would happily return.
First time here 5/12/2021. Outdoor patio. Great ambiance. Excellent covid procedures. Our waiter Lucas was enthusiastic and friendly. Outstanding service by all. Food was fabulous. Pricey. Can’t wait to go back.
Enclosed outdoor garden. Tables were well-spaced. Each table had its own fire pit for good warmth on a cool evening. The service was impeccable. The food was quite good although the ala carte menu was somewhat limited. It was our anniversary and they provided complimentary champagne, complimentary small appetizer and a complimentary sorbet desert.
All-in-all, a very positive experience.
Very poor service, over priced for small plates and an automatic 22% service charge for awful/slow/unattentive service. Left hungry and annoyed - disappointed tbh. And one of those places that makes you put on your mask every time someone approaches the table, totally disruptive. Unpleasant evening for $500 bucks.
Iron Gate courtyard is perfectly set up for the current pandemic. Nicely spaced seating, clear and safe guidelines all in a cozy, romantic setting. Each table either had a fire pit or heat element near it.
I took my wife for a Mothers Day dinner and the food and service were excellent. We opted for the family-style chef's dinner with wine pairings. All top-notch and delicious. You can tell that care and attention went into each dish. Our server was just attentive enough.
There is one major distracting flaw here that distracted from this great dinner and surroundings. The music playing was something you would hear in a bar setting or lower-end diner. It was an 80's mix that did not lend itself to a relaxed atmosphere. It truly was just out of place and took away from the atmosphere. I times we had to speak to each other loudly to hear each other. I had asked the music to be turned down and it was for only a while. The volume vacillated through our meal. A suggestion is to change the playlist and lower the volume or no music. They are charging premium prices here and it is worth it with the exception of the music, which as you see, can have a huge impact.
Had not been to the Iron Gate in the past year and forgot how much I enjoyed the courtyard and relaxed feel of this place. The wait staff were very friendly, service was well-timed and beverages were affordable
Celebrating Mother’s Day and it was delicious! The service and food was impeccable! Highly recommend
