A wonderful first experience at iron gate. Will be back.
We loved our table with all the fire pits. Food and Service were wonderful and the Greek white wine was outstanding.
I was looking to find a non-corporate restaurant with a story, Iron Gate did not disappoint. My girlfriend and I are well travelled and eaten at countless great restaurants...this was a most memorable experience.
One of the best dining experiences in the district. I've been here several times and everything from the service to the food to the ambiance is always top notch. Service staff is always attentive and extremely knowledgeable, and the food is a noticable cut above most restaurants in the area. The focaccia is always a revelation with toppings that change every time I visit. The gnocchi in pork ragu was absolutely amazing and the pork ragu itself was remarkably tender with the sauce perfectly seasoned. Many menu items change with the seasons so there's always something new to experience. Iron gate is an experience I'll continue to come back to again and again
Exceptional experience here. The food, service, and ambiance was wonderful. Service was friendly and attentive. We had the focaccia, carrots, gnocchi and branzino. We loved our evening here and can highly recommend Iron Gate.
Excellent food and great choices available.
We went with Chef's Choice and were not disappointed.
Delicious food. Great for business lunch. Ambiance lovely.
Iron Gate has been on my list for a while. The restaurant was beautiful and so peaceful on a Sunday afternoon. My waitress, Erin, let me tastes glass of wine before pouring me a full one, without my even asking. Can’t wait to come back for another meal!
Awesome device. Excellent drinks. Good environment
Bar area was fun to hang out in while we waited. Drink choices special. Service by hosts wonderful. Waitstaff too. Can’t wait to return
Iron Gate is the perfect date night spot. Our server’s recommendations were fantastic - the gnocchi is a must, and all the desserts are fabulous as well. Such a romantic ambience - can’t wait to come back and sit out on the patio once it warms up!
This restaurant is definitely worth the hype. Incredible intimate ambiance and very special food. Little Gem Lettuce, Ricotta Pancakes, catfish, and the sausage were among our many favorites for our brunch. Cocktails were beyond delicious and perfectly made. Even with two small children, we had a great seat by the fireplace and impeccable service. We will be coming back (sans kids) to try dinner. Perfection.
Don’t sit in the bar near the front. It is freezing. The door does not shut.
Food and service terrific. Reception was awful! Arrived 15 minutes early and were told we could not be seated until our reservation time. Who does that??? Massive back up at door because of this archaic rule. Would probably not go back because of this rudeness.
I had the gnocchi, which were excellent. My wife had the shrimp scampi, which were not to her liking. The dish was rather bland--not what we expected for shrimp scampi. The waitress recommended a nice red wine. We will probably go back and both have the gnocchi!
Brunch was heavenly. Absolutely delicious food with a deft and light touch. Elegant and comfortable dining room. And the staff overheard us talking about a member of our party's birthday coming up and brought us a beautiful homemade chocolate popsicle. Who could ask for anything more?
The food was excellent! Especially liked the carrot salad, the gnocchi, and the bison tartare. Very reasonable prices. Everyone was very gracious and attentive (but not overly so). Even tho I mistakenly made the reservation for tomorrow, they somehow fit us in tonite and were even apologizing for our inconvenience!
The food at Iron Gate is very, very good. I ordered things I ordinarily wouldn't order (slightly picky eater) and was very pleased with everything, as was my wife. Service was also as good as it gets, in a low key, not over the top way. Our only disappointment was that at 8PM they had already run out of one of their two main "entree" sized dishes (rockfish), after being told how delicious it was. The substitute fish dish, while not as fresh as probably the rockfish would have been, was also very good.
This place is awesome! Very cool building, an upscale scene without being stuffy at all. And the food? Very good. We had the chef’s menu and were pleased with every plate. It was actually quite a lot of food, to the point where we struggled to finish our two desserts. Highly recommend.
everything was delicious and service was wonderful!
What a fantastic restaurant! The space is just beautiful and great food to match. The service was perfect. My table wasn't ready so I sat at the bar and watched the chemist make great craft cocktails. Since we had to wait 20 minutes before were seated, the restaurant gave us an appetizer on the house. I'm looking forward to returning there again.
Iron Gate is a truly exceptional restaurant. Get the tasting menu - trust me. I’ve been there 3 times and gotten the tasting menu each time. Despite differences each time, every course was fabulous. Can with red or white wine. Just wonderful.
Menu is limited, sound level is high (hard wood everywhere), service generous and prompt. Good but not great neighborhood spot. EXCELLENT in nice weather when you can sit outside, and then it doesn't matter that the menu is limited & everybody's talking.
Iron Gate had been on my list of places to try in DC for a while, and when my mom came to visit it seemed like a perfect opportunity to check it out. It most definitely lived up to my expectations: the ambiance, the food, the service, the WINE. Our server selected an excellent wine to pair with two dishes I had picked, the bison tartare and the tortellini. It was the perfect wine for the food, and delicious all by itself as well! And for dessert we had the incredible chocolate ice cream with charred pineapple. Would definitely recommend!! A few of the dishes weren’t mind blowing, but it was still a lovely time! We sat indoors as well, which worked out great because we had an early reservation so it didn’t get loud until later. I’ll definitely be coming back!
I had been to lunch at The Iron Gate, but wanted to go back for dinner with my husband. I was so happy to be able to sit outside on a nice night in early February. We had the octopus, lamb sausage, foie gras, oysters, and bison tartare small plates - plus three cheeses. It was all excellent! Kevin was incredibly helpful and made great recommendations. Highly recommend and look forward to going back!
Unfortunately, we had a disappointing experience from arrival. We had a reservation and arrived to be told the dining room was closed due to a maintenance issue and our option was to sit outside by the fire pits and heaters or by the outdoor bar. They should have notified us in advance so we could make alternate arrangements. Then our whole fish came out undercooked and completely raw in the center. We sent it back and the staff graciously offered to send us out something to munch on while we waited for the fish. We were then charged for the appetizer we were offered while waiting for our fish to be properly cooked. And the same fish came back out torched so that all the garnish and produce on the plate was charred. All of this could have gone very differently with a little better customer service and communication. It was a big bummer to an evening that was meant to be a cozy celebration with family. The rest of the food was good but for a menu of this caliber and price point, we expected better execution and course correction.
Took my husband for 1:45 brunch. Table wasn’t ready until after 2:15. While I know the restaurant can’t kick slow/rude people out, I don’t understand why we couldn’t have been seated at another table. When we were taken to our table there were other open tables nearby.
We had drinks at the bar served by a friendly bartender. Wait staff was excellent and food was delicious.
Will try the Iron Gate another time and hope the seating is handled differently.
Great food, sat in the outdoor dining area. Ambiance was great for a cold evening
My husband and I had our rehearsal dinner at Iron Gate 36 years ago and had not been back since. We went for my birthday dinner and it was lovely. Wonderful food, great service and lovely atmosphere.
We want to go back in the spring/summer and sit on the patio.
We celebrated an early Valentines Day and our first month of marriage at Iron Gate, and I couldn’t have chosen a more romantic place. We were seated by a fire pit with thick blankets (perfect for a rainy February night), our server was attentive and brought us complementary champagne at the end of the evening, and the food was incredible. Do not pass up on the carrots - so delicious - and the gnocchi and octopus were great as well. Can’t wait to come back in the summer!
Updated dishes for a DC classic
Pleasant atmosphere— lovely historic building. Would have been nice to have quieter surroundings however.
Food, service, atmosphere, all absolutely fantastic! Highly recommend!
Enjoyed our waitress' competence and care. We sat adjacent to lively couple who wanted to share their foccacia. How nice was that? I'd recommend for ambience and cooked carrot appetizer.
Had a wonderful dinner - a scrumptious setting with a terrific waiter!
Went on a Thursday night. The indoor area was relatively empty with just people at the bar. Outdoor area out back was half full but given the restaurant setup, I imagine this more popular in warmer weather. Either way, out back, they had fire pits by each table and blankets. Did the chef’s selection, which was awesome. Everything was very good. I’d put in open table that it was my girlfriends birthday and the people obviously communicate well because multiple people that worked there mentioned it. The outdoor area was really nice with vine covered overhang which I’m sure is really nice in warm weather when it’s all green again
Had the tasting menu. Food and atmosphere were fantastic! Great service also.
The food was good, but honestly I thought I was getting an entree (given the price), but it should have been listed as a small plate. My dining companion and I had to order 3 entrees between us, and I still left hungry despite a tab of $67. I won't come back.
