This was one of the best brunches I have had in DC. The food was incredible as was the service. I will definitely return.
Perfect place for a casual lunch with a friend. Service was excellent- efficient and friendly without being intrusive. The food was exquisite. The patio was heated so we had a great time seating outdoors on a sunny but chilly afternoon. I need to go back when there are leaves on the vines.
Very cold, initially very good service. But we seemed to have gotten lost in the sea of diners as it got more crowded.
It was so ridiculously cold there but the food was good, cocktails were fun and the service was on point.
Several knowledgable people in Washington, DC recommended Irongate to us and they were not in error. The menu is not expansive but quite adequate. The appetizers were excellent as was the main dish we chose - red snapper which was fileted and then wrapped in grape leaves for baking. It was delicious. Service was attentive and the setting is intimate. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal there.
My comments relate to the cold, rainy night we were there, when the warm room and fireplace were delicious. I’m sure eating on the terrace in beautiful weather is equally good. We loved several of the small plates we tried, salads, gnocchi, risotto, and three desserts for the four of us. Everything was first rate. We ordered a very nice Greek wine with the help of the sommelier. My hostess, visiting from out of town, was nonplussed at finding the restaurant had neither of the British gins she prefers, but she tried a locally made gin and found it quite good, but “different.” And I lowered the service rating one star. Though our waiter was very friendly, he couldn’t answer some questions, and left us waiting for coffee for quite a long time.
I’ll definitely be back. Glad we chose Irongate.
The patio was beautiful! Unfortunately, the service was very, very slow. The food was fine, but nothing stands out to me as memorable. I think the bottle of wine my FIL selected was the highlight of the evening (unfortunately I don't recall which wine it was). I tried multiple times over the evening to get our waiter's attention, but he never seemed to be around. Without having had an opportunity to speak with him about the slowness of the evening, he delivered 3 gratis desserts for the table. They were appreciated, but I wish that instead of/in addition to that, we had actually been communicated with throughout the meal about why service was so slow, or offered an apology before the end of the night. I know many people who've had lovely times at Iron Gate, so I hope this was just a fluke.
The patio was beautiful, and it really did feel like an escape from city noise. The service was excellent and so was the food!
I have been two weeks in a row. It is a lovely place for an intimate meal for two. If you're lucky enough to have skinny friends like mine, all the plates are easy to share. Note worthy for brunch: everything on the menu.
We had a lovely meal in a fantastic setting. Highly recommend.
Magical evening sitting in courtyard. Shared family meal for two - many amazing small plates, each one more delicious than the last. Sesame encrusted feta, tenderloin, tahini dip, fennel salad, donut holes... all perfect. Great service - attentive but relaxed. Highly recommend!
One of the best new finds in a restaurant. Would go back again. I just tried but they are so booked that hard getting in. Would highly recommend it. Staff were wonderful.
Lovely dinner on the garden patio. Very good food and attentive service.
Wonderful service and delicious food.
The menu is like no other place we have dined; with bison, quale, yummy vegetarian lasagna and develed eggs with a hint of lemon. Creative food that tastes great. The inside is small but the patio is larger and suitable for a date night. You can actually carry on a conversation on the patio. The wine list (Italian and Greek) is extensive and the beer list is also excellent. Don't miss this place!
The service was excellent, food interesting, quality good, but the prices were not consistent with what you actually got.
Impeccable service, great food, not insultingly expensive. Really recommend the gnocchi.
The dining room where we sat was cozy with a fire blazing. There are also outdoor areas and a bar area that was very warm. The first thing my wife and I agreed on was that we probably wanted one of each down the entire left side of the menu. Everything we did end up ordering was delicious. The kitchen did a great job of serializing dishes so that we were able to focus and enjoy.
Just amazing! It was our first time dining at Iron Gate and decided on the Family Dinner. We loved everything. It offered a nice variety of dishes and was a tremendous deal for the amount of food served. The wait staff were knowledgeable and very polite. I can’t wait to go back.
I’ve lived in DC for 25 years and Iron Gate has become my favorite restaurant ever in the City. Great food, atmosphere and service. Perfecto!
We decided to dine at Iron Gate for our anniversary, and it was a great experience. Based on reviews, we expected a romantic ambiance, yet both my wife and I agreed that the dining room felt much more like a pub. Granted, we are not fussy people, and were quite comfortable. The food was excellent and tasty. For dessert, we asked our server which was the better of two selections, and we agreed on one. He proceeded to bring both of the two, along with a special anniversary dessert. We finished quite full after attempting to finish three desserts. Little things like this, and gratis champagne, are the reason why we would would gladly return to Iron Gate.
I went to Iron Gate for the first time with my girlfriend for our one-year anniversary. The atmosphere was perfect for the occasion. The food was incredible, especially for the price (we had the focaccia, gnocchi, and risotto). They also surprised us with a free dessert to celebrate the occasion (with a little gingerbread cookie that said “Happy Anniversary” on it) which was a nice touch. The only negative parts of our experience were waiting a little longer than we would’ve liked to be waited on, and the waitress giving us the wrong change. Overall, we had a wonderful time and would definitely go back.
Disappointing meal. Freezing cold on patio even with a heater. Food took 45 min with no waiter checking on us. The restaurant wasn’t even really busy just poorly staffed. The food was good but waiting almost an hour for all our courses when your cold and hungry was not enjoyable.
Great flavors in plates to share. Quiet, easy, lovely. I will be back.
Unusual and delicious food with a very unique setting that made for an enjoyable intimate meal.
one of the better dinners we have had in several years
The Iron Gate was the perfect place for an Easter brunch date. We had the Easter family meal, a prix fixe meal, and it was the perfect size and a great array of flavors. I look forward to going back sometime.
Fabulous food, great service, very cute place with creative dishes, well recommended.
great service, our food was taking a really long time so the manager gave us some complimentary apps. wait staff was very knowledgable about food and wines.
The food is tasty (pastas are the best) but pricey, and portions are small. Good selection of wines, excellent service, and cosy atmosphere. The dining room in the back is a bit dark, and the chairs are too low for the tables, especially for people who are not super tall (I'm 5'4''/165 cm).
One of our favorite restaurants in USA. Best food and service.
I went for the ambiance and food and wasn't disappointed by either. There are multiple seating options, each with terrific visual appeal, and the food, while small in portions, was big on flavor.
My girlfriend and I first visited Iron Gate this past week to celebrate her birthday. With its slightly hidden entrance and seasonal menu piquing my interest for a romantic date spot, I had high hopes.
Iron Gate did not disappoint for this occasion. The dining room is cozy, with a wood fireplace adding to its ambiance. The tables were placed in a smart way that allowed for a feeling of privacy despite a fairly open dining area. The server was friendly and gave spot-on wine recommendations to my girlfriend, while I explored the cocktail menu. I thoroughly enjoyed both drinks I chose, the second being the specialty Cherry Blossom celebration cocktail.
We both chose two different dishes and shared the four. The dishes were brought out in a perfectly timed manner that made sense to the palate and our pace. The highlight of our meal was the burrata and the gnocchi (like pillows!), although each dish was delicious with substantial depth.
The meal was surprisingly affordable and filling. We decided we will have to make it back some day soon to explore the dessert menu.
I love Iron Gate. A friend and I were looking to have a catch-up lunch and decided on IG, since it's consistently delicious and near my office. We were not disappointed. We ate the burrata with grapefruit and beets, crispy potatoes with yogurt sauce, pasta with pork ragu, and pecorino-crusted chicken. The cheese and chicken were mine, but we shared everything. It was really delicious, if not a bit heavy (but just because of what we ordered). We needed to food to help soak up our Ivy City gin martinis, also super.
I did end up at Iron Gate once thinking I was going to get the tapas menu and found myself at a $150 tasting menu....having done a few of the fancier tasting menus in the area, I'm not sure Iron Gate competes on that, but their small plates are really just spectacular, as are the cocktails.
Great place with great food. We went here for a special occasion this past weekend. It is a very unique location with a lot of great options. However, our service was extremely slow. It looks like they didn't have enough people on that day, but our waitress made the best of it. They even brought out a piece of cake for my boyfriend's birthday free of charge. I would 100% recommend this spot!
Loved the ambiance and different dining spaces. The food was very good, and made with high quality ingredients. I highly recommend finishing your dinner with their doughnuts! (really more like doughnut holes... to die for, with a unique citrus honey flavor) Staff was great.
It's alright, though over-hyped. The food is good yet not groundbreaking, while the service is underwhelming. And the whole restaurant has an intense smokey smell to it due to the open wood fireplace (expect your clothes and hair to smell like smoke when you leave!). We came here for brunch - may try dinner some time to see if that explains the high ratings...
Right now, I don't think there's a chef in the D.C. area that can compare to Chef Tony Chittum. We introduced two long-time friends to Iron Gate last weekend and not only did they love the food, they wanted to know why we hadn't taken them there before. We all had the tasting menu with paired wines and the food and wines were amazing. The wine selection at Iron Gate matches the excellent quality of the food. Kudos to Chef Chittum and his extremely well-organized and professional staff. If you have never been to Iron Gate, you are missing out on one of the most amazing dining experiences in the DMV.
Everything about Iron Gate is excellent: the service, the food, the ambiance. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough.
Ambiance was fabulous and intimate for a special occasion, however the food was inconsistent. A few dishes like the risotto and gnocchi were outstanding, but other elements were lacking for a top rate restaurant particularly the vegetable lasagna and mushroom appetizer.
