What Insiders Are Saying
Iron Gate in Dupont is known for its prix-fixe dinner, but we like it best for drinks and a light bite.
Anniversary dinner was great and the outdoor patio gave the dinner an romantic ambiance.
The gnocchi, crostini and focaccia were very good. The burrata was obviously frozen and then not fully thawed when it was served. The beet and walnut spread was uninteresting. Service was great, great ambiance.
What an excellent restaurant. The wait staff was attentive and provided great wine recommendations - even samples! The food was spectacular. We got the homemade focaccia, the battered halloumi, asparagus and mixed grill.
If it's your first time, you have to get the mixed grill! It has a interesting variety of meats and is a treat when celebrating a special occasion.
I would recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing evening of eating and drinking.
Our server was very friendly and attentive. The gnocchis was amazing, and outdoor seating was very pleasant. I can’t wait to go back there with my wife.
Had to wait for the table even though we had a reservation. There were people waiting for even longer. Got a table by the kitchen entrance and there was an unpleasant smell. When we tried to order they were out of some key item in the menu. Server said there was nothing he could do about that, which is true but it is odd that they were out of stuff so early. We ended up leaving and going somewhere else.
Was very disappointed in our time at Iron Gate. We were celebrating a birthday and requested to sit outside on the patio. Unfortunately, we weren’t lucky enough to get a table outside. Having been in the service industry I understand not everybody can have what they request, so it wasn't a big deal. However, we would have appreciated the hostess communicating to us why our request was not met, and to have given us a nice cozy table somewhere inside. Instead we were sat at one of the least desirable tables in the middle of the dining room. The hostesses tried multiple times to sit a similar table next to us and three times the patrons requested a different table.
Table preferences aside the service was terrible. Our waiter started off by giving us water right away but failed to offer to explain the menu or provide suggestions/ recommendations(6:30 PM). After seeing him initially he didn’t return for another 15 minutes to take our drink order (6:45PM). It then took another 15 minutes for our drinks to arrive delivered by another server (7:00 PM). 30 minutes into our time, we had only seen our waiter twice, greeting and ordering drinks, and still had not placed our food order. We finally ordered our food (7:10PM), and proceeded to not see our waiter for the next hour. An hour after arriving we had only received our drinks and focaccia that we had ordered (7:37PM). As our plates slowly arrived over the next 30 minutes our waiter did not once come over to ask how we were enjoying our food. We both finished our drinks and it took the waiter 15 minutes to come over and ask if we'd like refills (8:00PM). At the end of the meal we asked for the check, 15 minutes later it arrived (8:15 PM). We immediately gave the waiter the card, ready to get out of there, but alas it took him another 15 minutes to even run the card. We finally left after 2 hours (8:30PM) extremely dissatisfied.
While the food was good, it was not exceptional and the service alone is a reason to never re
Iron Gate was recommended by a friend that lives in DC and is a foodie. It was in her top 3. I took my wife for our 20th anniversary. I added a comment (ref anniversary) to the reservation on Open Table to try and get a spot in the outside seating area, which we did. Romantic, great food, top notch service is what will keep us coming back. The server must have been told that it was our anniversary because he brought out a free dessert with a chocolate card on top reading "Happy Anniversary", which tells me they go out of their way to make a customers special day even more special.
Our first time at Iron Horse was for a birthday celebration. We ordered the chef's menu and drinks. While I appreciate that most of the courses had seasonal and local vegetables, I would not come back for the food. It was mediocre at best.
There's no point to going to Iron Gate in the Spring or Summer unless you can get a table outside on the patio. Having made a reservation three month in advance, we were notified the day prior to our reservation that the patio was being used for a private party. The "nice" table they gave us was in dark, depressing room. It was like eating in a cave. Food was fine.
I thought the menu could be improved for lunch. More salads with protein.
Superb food, especially the pastas. The service is also first-rate. The patio is spectacular, but the chairs are not terribly comfortable. It's time to replace them.
Incredible food, amazing environment and kind staff.
How this place doesn’t have a Michelin star yet is beyond comprehension. Best gnocchi in the city. Great service. Wonderful atmosphere.
Gathering was for Mother's Day celebration and college graduation. It was perfect! Food was outstanding; service wonderful; and we particularly enjoyed not being rushed through our meal.
The food is great, and the inside dining room has always been nice in winter months, but this night in May the dining room was way too warm - almost as if the AC was off - which is especially noticeable at this restaurant when many of the food selections are rich, spicy or meat-oriented (i.e., winter food). When spending this kind of money you expect the atmosphere to be more comfortable. We hurried through our dinner, didn't enjoy it as much, and skipped dessert because of the temperature.
It’s very charming with delicious, fresh food, all presented beautifully! I adored sitting on the patio under greenery on a beautiful Spring day. The service was very good, too.
Strange menu. Small, crowded tables.
The carrots and pork ragu/gnocchi are a must. The Cham Show cocktail is incredible. Great wine and beer list as well.
Really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. It was a perfect date spot for small bites and drinks.
Excellent all around!
Our server Sean was excellent! He provided professional and fun service. Thanks Sean! Also the atmosphere was on point despite the rain.
May be willing to give them a 2nd chance - some food is excellent; some is OK. It took us a long long time to find out who waited for our table; We did family style - no explanations for what's included; then food came in a bit chaotic order without announcing its contents, which distracted my guests. Entire evening, service was rather unprofessional, cold. We enjoyed our own company and ambiance.
Everything we tried was so flavorful and delicious! I especially recommend the gnocchi and the stuffed meatballs.
The servers were so kind.
Outside terrace dining was fabulous
The food was amazing and the service very good. The vibe out back on the patio is romantic which was perfect as we were celebrating my girlfriend’s birthday. Very enjoyable time!
First rate experience with a small plate experience. Recommend the octopus, bison tartare, burrata. Unfortunately they could not accommodate a gluten free tasting menu. Attentive service, very knowledgeable wait staff.
Iron Gate has a great vibe and a lovely patio. We had a pleasant dinner. I especially loved the gnocchi, which is simply perfection. We ordered the grilled platter which was a feast. My husband is a meat lover and he utterly enjoyed it.
Fantastic dinner for our anniversary
The atmosphere was lovely, but our server was tremendously rude. I'm not usually the person to say that. I know it's a tough job, but she was just awful. Condescending and unhelpful. We went on a Thursday, so perhaps the best element of their staff makes an appearance on the weekend. From my experience, I suggest going to Iron Gate with an old friend whom you're not trying to impress for pretty small plates and a lovely patio setting. Do NOT reserve it for a special occasion, for fear of manners that might spoil more than the food.
Romantic outdoor patio was perfection for our anniversary dinner! Service was fantastic, food was delicious - get the burrata, gnocci and octopus for sure! We went all small share plates to keep the cost reasonable - wine list was huge and lots of good options at various price points. Will definitely return here!! Thanks again
The best anniversary dinner/date spot in DC. We come here every year and it gets better every time. Sitting outside in the spring under the Wisteria (not blooming yet this year because it has been so cold) is a highlight of the dinner but the meal is the real highlight.
Beautiful beautiful setting and service was excellent but the food did not measure up to the rest.
Amazing! Such great food and service. Get the mixed grill! Perfect.
I’ve been to Iron Gate a number of times before and had fantastic experiences every time however on this occasion the service was slow (and not friendly), and while the food is good, the serving sizes have shrunk dramatically in the last few months. Value for money has dropped as a result.
Excellent subtle Greek food; patio is inviting in summer.
Iron Gate has taken its level up a notch since my last visit, focusing slightly less on kale and other exotica and more on attractive interpretations of familiar ingredients of American cuisine in a Mediterranean setting. I'm very much looking forward to returning.
One of the best spring lunch locations going.
Good portions, great food and wine list.
Iron Gate always exceeds expectations every time we go, whether it is treating out of town friends or in this case, celebrating our anniversary. They made it very special
