What Insiders Are Saying
Iron Gate in Dupont is known for its prix-fixe dinner, but we like it best for drinks and a light bite.
Very unique place, delicious food, my friend and I enjoyed it completely. Will be bringing family and friends back.
Great food and environment.
One of Washington’s best.
Excellent venue ... food and service. Sunday brunch options are great and the live jazz music was perfect!
Our server was amazing! Such a friendly guy. And so enthusiastic. Bartender was great too!
The food was good, but I found it difficult to make very healthy choices, i.e., lots of cheese, bacon with the eggplant. I also thought it was rather pricey.
Fantastic outdoor ambiance with a great small plates menu. Each dish is distinctive and well prepared!
I was there on Sunday night. Our waitress appeared drunk. My dish was so small, that friends joked that they could not see anything in the bowl. I was very disappointed since the Iron Gate has been a long time favorite. It will be a while before I go back.
Our server was great! However, I think they were short staffed so everything was really slow. Also, it felt like the AC was out too so it felt really hot in the room. Food was great though. Just wished they had more staff and the AC worked, especially since it was so hot!
Food was good. Nothing to brag about to be honest. Don’t go here on a summer night unless you want to sweat like crazy. We sat outside and there are no fans or anything outside. Overall ok experience. don’t recommend
Everything was great except it was pretty hot. My date and I were sweating most of the time. Food was incredible. Felt bad for the staff bc they were drenched in sweat.
The outdoor is charming - I bet this will be the best ambience in all of DC only if DC was not as humid and hot as it is!
Unfortunately the magical garden was unbearable last week due to the humid weather
The server was so kind and moved us indoors when we asked (outside diners were flooding into the main restaurant) but unfortunately even the indoor part had broken air conditioning !!! They had a portable unto on which could hardly make things better than what we could not endure outside!
Service was good
And food was very good (most of the vegetarian dishes)
Price was high for the portion served but expected if only they could provide the diners with comfortable surrounding and not having us wiping sweat while having a nice expensive meal
Also bathroom can do with a better clean !!
The food was not on point this time around, as the flavors within each dish were mismatched; they didn't meld together. Gemelli with rabbit for example was too briney as the olives were an overkill.
It was truly an awesome experience. We did not do the tasting menu- hopefully next time! The gnocchi was a hit, and the cucumbers were really shockingly great! The feta red pepper dish was excellent, zesty but refreshing. The service was good. We sat outside and it was beautiful, though it was quite warm.
Anniversary. Very, very warm inside and too hot to be outside. Did not acknowledge anniversary despite the fact I told them about it when I made the reservation. Score on ambiance is totally based upon the temperature in the restaurant. Otherwise the ambiance is a 5.
GO! What an amazing find. Get the tasting menu, sit back and enjoy every morsel. Interesting wine menu also. Lucas was a great server.
The food was excellent but the service was extraordinarily slow. Had the tasting menu but didn't even receive our bottle of wine until the end of the first course. This was also an hour after ordering. In total tasting menu took 3 hours for three courses.
Time and service aside, food was excellent
Great ambiance and food in this cozy, unique setting in the heart of downtown. We had not been here since the early 1990's and had heard so many positive comments and reviews since their re-birth in 2012. Without a doubt, the positive reviews and comments were on target. Give the Iron Gate a try, sample their wonderful food offerings, and be sure to ask for a table in the old stable!
Incredible food, venue and service - also a lovely gesture of champagne as we celebrated our engagement!
Great evening and service, lovely food, thank you!
Love the food! We were celebrating a friend’s engagement so they brought us a glass of sparkling to toast. So lovely!
A gem in our city. We had a particularly knowledgeable server about their international wine offerings. Dependably great place to enjoy a meal.
Service and venue were great. Food was well portioned and seasoned nicely. I thought the food overall was fine but not amazing. Very cheese and pork heavy.
We recently had lunch here for our Anniversary. If I'd have known sooner I would have reserved a space on the back patio in the shade, as the only table left outside was in the full sun, which doesn't bode well with food and wine. Otherwise, everything was very good. Great service, wine list and the appetizers we shared were excellent.
We had a wonderful time and the food was delicious. Good food. Although the fried green tomatoes had too much batter. Would like to have had more crab. Love our server. Very responsive and nice. Loved the portions size overall. Little warm on the patio. We will return for a special occasion!
I highly recommend the Chef’s Family Table for dinner. Everything we had was incredible.
Iron Gate provides beautifully presented and delicious food and cocktail options. There was also an extensive wine list that we did not explore. The menu is seasonally-focused, with inventive vegetarian and seafood options for those with restricted diets. The outdoor patio is an urban oasis that transports you beyond the hubbub, although it can be a bit stuffy on warm evenings. Service was attentive and informative, without being overbearing. We thoroughly enjoyed our Iron Gate experience and look forward to returning in the future!
The service and the food are exceptional at Iron Gate. The atmosphere is lovely too. We go as often as we can!
Great Mediterranean food in a delightful outdoor setting. Delicious pasta dishes. Service was erratic but improved through the evening.
Disappointed in the food. Eggs were overcooked and potatoes were deep-fried entirely through. Nice backyard patio.
Interesting menu. Lovely setting and competent, friendly staff.
We hit a perfect night in the 70's with no humidity and that is when Iron Gate is outstanding. Small plates, high price makes my partner unhappy. But, a delicious red wine under the twinkling lights on my first day of summer vacation is perfection.
This is my new favorite restaurant in all of DC. The food is amazing. The service was outstanding - our waiter made a wine recommendation that changed our meal and enhanced the entire experience for us. 10 out of 10 on the wine rec. The grilled octopus is life changing best I’ve ever had. Agnolotti is small serving size but still wonderful. It seems pricey but it’s worth it.
Not good. We had a reservation and when we arrived on time they didn’t have a table for us. We had to eat in the bar. Not good for a business lunch.
A lovely place! Went with my family to celebrate a graduation--it was perfect for a special occasion. Though the family-style Chef's table menu option is a little pricey, it is so much fun and truly delicious! I have been dreaming about the roasted carrots and the olive oil cake! Relatively vegetarian friendly, too.
We had a lovely dinner here. Even though the restaurant was full, the tables are well spaced and it was possible to have a conversation. The staff was very pleasant and efficient; just enough attention. The food was wonderful. Particularly enjoyed the radishes with charred onion sauce. Nice selection of wines. The cherry dessert was delicious.
Wonderful outdoor historical patio! Interesting menu, small plates.
Service a bit off, slow, new? Nice people just need a bit more training and guest focus.
I had seen Iron Gate written up in a DC magazine for being the best spot for outdoor dining so I made a reservation. When I arrived they weren't seating anyone outdoors due to the threat of rain so I was seated indoors. I was fortunate to have Thandi as my server. His detailed knowledge of the wine was very impressive! I took his recommendations on dishes to order and was very pleased with the pork gyro. Enjoyed it and would love to return!
Our table of four shared the family-style dining option.
When we first arrived, we were greeted warmly by the hostess and shown to the lovely patio, which sits under a large arbor of grape vines. The indoor bar hid the much larger seating area nicely, and on a different day I'd have been perfectly happy sitting there for a meal.
The cocktails that came out first were excellent. IG's version of the Negroni was a refreshing take on a favorite classic.
Our server, Sean, came to our table and collected our menus (the family-style option is akin to a prix-fixe) and went on to suggest two Greek wines - a white and a red - that would pair well with our meal. We settled on both.
The food began to arrive quickly, starting with several appetizers: house-made foccacia, sesame crusted feta, and beetroot-think dip were our favorites.
The main course consisted of a refreshing beer and spinach salad, bucatini pasta salad, and a perfectly cooked buffalo skirt steak. The patio almost filled up for two separate dinner seating during our time there but I felt like Sean went out of his way to make sure we never felt rushed.
Dessert was incredible. The tiny bite-sized Greek donuts were good, but hard to compare with the sublime olive oil cake with summer berries and creme fraiche. I honestly could have eaten the entire plate, had dinner not been so delightful that I was full.
The ambiance was awesome, service superb (my most important factor in a restaurant), and prices great.
We will definitely be making another trip in the near future.
Thank you Chef Tony Chittum and Sean for an amazing experience!
We were a party of 7 celebrating Father's Day. It was a beautiful sunny day and we were lucky enough to get a table in the idyllic courtyard. It was very hot, and an umbrella or a fan would have helped, but being outside was wonderful!
We were early for our reservation and got drinks at the bar. Service was quick and the bartender allowed us to try different champagnes before we settled on the one we liked best. Once we were seated we had 3 starters then entrees. They were a bit slow bringing food and once our entrees came, one of our party had to wait 10 minutes after everyone else was served (she had a salad). The food was good. The catfish was done with a pecorino crust, charred avacado, and a radish-cucumber remoulade - it was the best dish of the day, out of this world! The Lemon ricotta pancakes were fine. A dense consistency with no hint of any lemon flavor, disappointing since I love all things lemon. The Spinach and Mushroom salad was very average but came with generous portion of Hanger steak. I would definitely go back. The ambiance was can't be beat and the service was great. I might try some different dishes as it was not cheap and we were not wowed by anything other than the catfish.
