This restaurant is definitely worth the hype. Incredible intimate ambiance and very special food. Little Gem Lettuce, Ricotta Pancakes, catfish, and the sausage were among our many favorites for our brunch. Cocktails were beyond delicious and perfectly made. Even with two small children, we had a great seat by the fireplace and impeccable service. We will be coming back (sans kids) to try dinner. Perfection.
Don’t sit in the bar near the front. It is freezing. The door does not shut.
Food and service terrific. Reception was awful! Arrived 15 minutes early and were told we could not be seated until our reservation time. Who does that??? Massive back up at door because of this archaic rule. Would probably not go back because of this rudeness.
Brunch was heavenly. Absolutely delicious food with a deft and light touch. Elegant and comfortable dining room. And the staff overheard us talking about a member of our party's birthday coming up and brought us a beautiful homemade chocolate popsicle. Who could ask for anything more?
The food was excellent! Especially liked the carrot salad, the gnocchi, and the bison tartare. Very reasonable prices. Everyone was very gracious and attentive (but not overly so). Even tho I mistakenly made the reservation for tomorrow, they somehow fit us in tonite and were even apologizing for our inconvenience!
The food at Iron Gate is very, very good. I ordered things I ordinarily wouldn't order (slightly picky eater) and was very pleased with everything, as was my wife. Service was also as good as it gets, in a low key, not over the top way. Our only disappointment was that at 8PM they had already run out of one of their two main "entree" sized dishes (rockfish), after being told how delicious it was. The substitute fish dish, while not as fresh as probably the rockfish would have been, was also very good.
This place is awesome! Very cool building, an upscale scene without being stuffy at all. And the food? Very good. We had the chef’s menu and were pleased with every plate. It was actually quite a lot of food, to the point where we struggled to finish our two desserts. Highly recommend.
everything was delicious and service was wonderful!
What a fantastic restaurant! The space is just beautiful and great food to match. The service was perfect. My table wasn't ready so I sat at the bar and watched the chemist make great craft cocktails. Since we had to wait 20 minutes before were seated, the restaurant gave us an appetizer on the house. I'm looking forward to returning there again.
Iron Gate is a truly exceptional restaurant. Get the tasting menu - trust me. I’ve been there 3 times and gotten the tasting menu each time. Despite differences each time, every course was fabulous. Can with red or white wine. Just wonderful.
Menu is limited, sound level is high (hard wood everywhere), service generous and prompt. Good but not great neighborhood spot. EXCELLENT in nice weather when you can sit outside, and then it doesn't matter that the menu is limited & everybody's talking.
Iron Gate had been on my list of places to try in DC for a while, and when my mom came to visit it seemed like a perfect opportunity to check it out. It most definitely lived up to my expectations: the ambiance, the food, the service, the WINE. Our server selected an excellent wine to pair with two dishes I had picked, the bison tartare and the tortellini. It was the perfect wine for the food, and delicious all by itself as well! And for dessert we had the incredible chocolate ice cream with charred pineapple. Would definitely recommend!! A few of the dishes weren’t mind blowing, but it was still a lovely time! We sat indoors as well, which worked out great because we had an early reservation so it didn’t get loud until later. I’ll definitely be coming back!
I had been to lunch at The Iron Gate, but wanted to go back for dinner with my husband. I was so happy to be able to sit outside on a nice night in early February. We had the octopus, lamb sausage, foie gras, oysters, and bison tartare small plates - plus three cheeses. It was all excellent! Kevin was incredibly helpful and made great recommendations. Highly recommend and look forward to going back!
Took my husband for 1:45 brunch. Table wasn’t ready until after 2:15. While I know the restaurant can’t kick slow/rude people out, I don’t understand why we couldn’t have been seated at another table. When we were taken to our table there were other open tables nearby.
We had drinks at the bar served by a friendly bartender. Wait staff was excellent and food was delicious.
Will try the Iron Gate another time and hope the seating is handled differently.
Great food, sat in the outdoor dining area. Ambiance was great for a cold evening
My husband and I had our rehearsal dinner at Iron Gate 36 years ago and had not been back since. We went for my birthday dinner and it was lovely. Wonderful food, great service and lovely atmosphere.
We want to go back in the spring/summer and sit on the patio.
Updated dishes for a DC classic
Pleasant atmosphere— lovely historic building. Would have been nice to have quieter surroundings however.
Food, service, atmosphere, all absolutely fantastic! Highly recommend!
Enjoyed our waitress' competence and care. We sat adjacent to lively couple who wanted to share their foccacia. How nice was that? I'd recommend for ambience and cooked carrot appetizer.
Had a wonderful dinner - a scrumptious setting with a terrific waiter!
Went on a Thursday night. The indoor area was relatively empty with just people at the bar. Outdoor area out back was half full but given the restaurant setup, I imagine this more popular in warmer weather. Either way, out back, they had fire pits by each table and blankets. Did the chef’s selection, which was awesome. Everything was very good. I’d put in open table that it was my girlfriends birthday and the people obviously communicate well because multiple people that worked there mentioned it. The outdoor area was really nice with vine covered overhang which I’m sure is really nice in warm weather when it’s all green again
Had the tasting menu. Food and atmosphere were fantastic! Great service also.
The food was good, but honestly I thought I was getting an entree (given the price), but it should have been listed as a small plate. My dining companion and I had to order 3 entrees between us, and I still left hungry despite a tab of $67. I won't come back.
Our server Kevin was great! He made great recommendations with wine and food especially since I have celiac. Definitely will come back!
Very bad smell in the restaurant. Smelled like a bathroom.
Such a charming place.
I like the food, service and atmosphere.
I had a branch but I’d like to go back for dinner next time.
Wonderful menu selection. Server was great at recommending items based on our taste.
Went to iron gate for restaurant week, after not having eaten there in 20 years. Liked that the rw offerings were selections from the regular menu. Iron gate always had romantic ambiance—we were seated in the clubby back dining with an inviting roaring wood fire in the charming fireplace. Great short rib and lamb kefades—now the restaurant has food worthy of atmosphere. Will be back in spring to sit on the beautiful patio.
Was visiting DC for work and found Iron Gate online and was so happy I did. Food was excellent. It was Restaurant Week and my colleague and I decided to go with the $35 3-course option. Everything was expertly prepared, service was great and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. I highly recommend Iron Gate if you are in DC.
Everything we ate was amazing and the vibe was great.
Everything was wonderful! Couldn't have been better! Thanks so much for helping us celebrate our anniversary.
Great food, atmosphere and service.
We went to Iron Gate during Restaurant Week. Even though the selections were limited, we were both delighted with our choices. My wife had the tenderest short ribs she had ever eaten and my mackerel was fantastic. The restaurant is often labeled as romantic and my wife and I have to agree. We were seated right across from the warming fireplace which cast a reddish hue on our delicious dinner. We will return, hopefully before the next Restaurant Week.
So romantic and unusual, eating outside with all the fire pits in January! Tremendous restaurant week value. Delicious food and I loved the hot sangria.
Well. I have always enjoyed Iron Gate. Went there tonight during restaurant week. I had the beet salad, short ribs and semifreddo. Appetizer and dessert was lovely. The short ribs were much less than stellar. They were very fatty and tough. I’ve never had short ribs with which I’ve had to wrestle. I didn’t mention this to the server. I guess I should have - but I figured maybe this is what happens if you order off the restaurant week menu. Hubs had the mackerel - it was the best I’ve ever tasted.
I went here for restaurant week. I have nothing but great things to say from the atmosphere, to the food, to the service. Everything was great. So much so that I will be going back.
The food and service, as always, were fantastic.
Iron Gate was a fabulous restaurant week choice for lunch. It wasn't crowded or noisy and as always the food was outstanding. We all live in the neighborhood and love the ambiance of the restaurant. My entree of gnocchi was delicious as was the appetizer of arancini. Others had the beet salad appetizer and catfish entree and were happy with them both. We all had a delicious fruit tart for dessert. Highly recommended.
