Everything was wonderful! Couldn't have been better! Thanks so much for helping us celebrate our anniversary.
So romantic and unusual, eating outside with all the fire pits in January! Tremendous restaurant week value. Delicious food and I loved the hot sangria.
Well. I have always enjoyed Iron Gate. Went there tonight during restaurant week. I had the beet salad, short ribs and semifreddo. Appetizer and dessert was lovely. The short ribs were much less than stellar. They were very fatty and tough. I’ve never had short ribs with which I’ve had to wrestle. I didn’t mention this to the server. I guess I should have - but I figured maybe this is what happens if you order off the restaurant week menu. Hubs had the mackerel - it was the best I’ve ever tasted.
I went here for restaurant week. I have nothing but great things to say from the atmosphere, to the food, to the service. Everything was great. So much so that I will be going back.
The food and service, as always, were fantastic.
Iron Gate was a fabulous restaurant week choice for lunch. It wasn't crowded or noisy and as always the food was outstanding. We all live in the neighborhood and love the ambiance of the restaurant. My entree of gnocchi was delicious as was the appetizer of arancini. Others had the beet salad appetizer and catfish entree and were happy with them both. We all had a delicious fruit tart for dessert. Highly recommended.
We went during restaurant week and the food was great but the service was very slow throughout the meal. Despite this, our waiter dropped off the check while we were in the middle of eating dessert. It was unprofessional for how much we ended up spending on eating and drinking.
Great! The staff seemed overworked though. Hire more people!
Excellent experience! Environment, food and service were all spectacular. Would happily visit again.
We've been wanting to visit Iron Gate for years but reservations are hard to come by... and we were not disappointed! We were seated on the patio right next to a fire pit so temperature on a January night wasn't an issue. Loved the house-made shrub, foie gras, roasted carrots, scallops, bison tartare, and cabbage tortellini!
Wonderful, unique food that is very fresh. Excellent date spot.
Always a great experience here.
It was a great experience! My partner and i went to the Iron Gate to celebrate our anniversary. I had been to the restaurant ages ago.. the ambiance is very nice and romantic. The food was excellent and i was really impressed by the customer service! I am vegetarian and while there are not many interesting vegetarian options as main course, our waiter did his best to make me happy. The wine list is rich and diverse and the food very good! I will go back !
Lovely restaurant, great food and service was impeccable. However, there is a smell in the dining area in front of the chef's area that is very difficult to ignore. I traded seats with my daughter because she couldn't stand it. Management really needs to remedy that issue because I am sure they know about it.
New year’s eve
We went to Iron Gate for their New Years Eve menu. Unfortunately, we did not have a great experience for the amount of money it cost. It was six courses and we waited 25-40 minutes between each course. The food was unbelievably good, but I feel like we couldn't enjoy the last 3 courses because by the time we received them the food had already settled in my stomach and I was full.
Further, we were the one's who had to address the time issue and not our server or management. They new there was an issue and it feels like they did nothing to remedy the situation. We got there at 8:15 and did not leave until 11:30. We watched many tables came in after us leave before us. If we had just been talked to, or if someone came over and addressed the issue sooner it would have helped save the experience. It felt like our patience was taken advantage of.
Also, the cost of this menu seemed like a money grab after we saw that you could do the a la carte menu and order everything on it for a lot cheaper than what we paid. Most of the things on the a la carte menu were also on the pre fixe menu.
It pains me to write such a negative review because the food was amazing, but our overall experience was awful. We had been to Iron Gate before and had a great experience it appears that they were unbelievable ill prepared for a NYE Dinner. We wasted a good amount of money and could have gone somewhere cheaper and had a better experience.
Romantic setting great service great food fun bar as you walk in for a pre dinner cocktail
Great ambiance, food on prefixed menu was hit or miss, $95 per person felt definetly overpriced.
Amazing ambience and food. Would definitely recommend and go again!
This is a most wonderful spot for a special occasion meal. We were there for brunch and the menu, the food, and the service were exquisite. We sat near the fireplace (with a real wood fire, not a gas fireplace with fake logs.) Every single item the three of us had was excellent.
Love the rear carriage house. One of my favorite places to eat in dc.
Food and service were great.
Charming, cozy place with excellent service. Unique Chef creations.
I really want to like this place...but the service is THE WORST in town. It’s like everyone there is troubled by their job. Food is good, but the service just down right sticks.
One of the best dining experiences of my life. Really good food combined with a one of a kind location and ambience. I was astonished to see that a restaurant offered the Christmas tradition of a Fish Feast, which is a Catholic tradition dating back to before World War II, when Catholics were to prohibited from eating meat during the days leading up to Christmas. My husband and I had the feast of the 7 fishes , which included 4-5 courses and each course contained several dishes. The dining experience was like no other. The atmosphere is a combination of a castle with a speakeasy and very romantic. On the weekend street parking is ample, but there is also the option of valet parking. Expect to spend $50-$60 a person plus tax and tip. My only criticism is that they need to turn up the lights because t is difficult to read a menu by candle light.
We went to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. Cozy atmosphere and creative dishes but just wasn’t as good as it had been the last couples of years.
Very unique atmosphere, love the outdoor seating with fire pits. The inside is cozy. The wine list is impressive and the foos quality was very very good. We enjoyed our pre-theater dining experience very much and will be back!
A delicious menu and the perfect place on a cold winter afternoon in front of their lovely fireplace. This place is absolutely great!
Our experience at Iron Gate was subpar due almost exclusively to the poor service. We arrived on time for our reservation but were told that we had to wait 40 minutes for our table. When they were finally ready to seat us, they sat us at a communal table with another couple since they did not have enough seating available. The table was also located right next to the door, so we were cold the entire time. When we finally sat down, the waiter only asked my partner for her drink order and then walked away without taking mine. He also did not explain that they served small plates, so we were surprised at the size of our dishes when they arrived (and surely would have ordered another plate or two had we known). While the food was generally pretty tasty, we were already disappointed with our experience by the time it arrived. We have heard great things about the restaurant, and perhaps it was just a bad night for them, but, overall, I would not recommend based on our experience.
Best meal I've had in Washington DC in many years. Restaurant accommodated our party in every way, making the evening relaxing, unhurried and delicious.
An excellent spot for date night. The food was great, the libations were stellar, and the staff explained the menu well.
We’re from out of town so we chose Iron Gate based on online reviews and articles. We absolutely loved it! The venue was the perfect place to celebrate our wedding anniversary- quiet and cozy. The food was phenomenal (and I don’t typically venture past salads and sandwiches), and the service was hands down the best we’ve had our whole DC trip. They even had complimentary champagne and dessert ready for us for our celebration, which I was not expecting! I highly recommend the cabbage tortellini and the hearth roasted carrots.
Wife’s birthday included thoughtful, understated celebration - perfect!
Very gracious and accommodating hosting and service. I appreciated a truly adult night out. We shared the Feast of the Seven Fishes special. A real tour de force for the kitchen. Loved the opportunity to try it. But, it was a horrible value, compared to the rest of the menu. Nice, but I wouldn’t repeat the order.
We were looking forward to an evening of fine dining after so many great reviews. The ambiance is charming and our server was lovely and informed. We chose the largest tasing menu , “ Seven Fishes”. From this point, the meal was less than expected. The 10 small plates came out too quickly. No time to savor. Depending on who delivered it, we got very little description of the dishes. Since they weren’t described on the menu, we would have enjoyed more flourish. Within an hour everything was delivered. I felt we were being rushed out for another seating.
Food was good, but served too quickly. We weren’t looking for fast food.
Hadn't been to Iron Gate for probably at least 10 years. Food and service were outstanding. However, I was informed on the morning of the reservation (which had been made more than a week earlier) that the dining room would be unavailable due to booking a private party. Was offered choice of sitting in the bar area or in the patio. It was a very cold night, and even with the fire pits, the patio was arctic. Because we arrived so early, we were able to snag seating in the bar, which was extremely noisy. Surely Iron Gate could have let me know earlier so we could have looked for an alternative place to eat.
Distinctly Average. We all opted for the "feast of the seven fishes" and the food was good but nothing special. The problem was more that it was rushed through. We didn't feel like it was enjoyable as we didnt have time to sit back and soak it up. The bottle of wine we ordered was not chilled.
The food was incredible and service was generally quite good. The only problem was that we were told to sit on a nearly empty patio in 30-degree weather or wait 45 minutes, despite having a reservation. Some space heaters were available but it was still freezing and windy. I understand that hosts have to make difficult choices to seat all parties, but this was very disappointing as it was clearly too cold to seat people outside at all. I'd still come back, but if you're dining in winter, make sure to specifically request an indoor table when you reserve.
I was freezing. Absolutely freezing.
Some dishes were excellent. Many were just ok. All were over-priced for the amount of food.
Iron Gate continues to be one of the best in DC!
