What Insiders Are Saying
Iron Gate in Dupont is known for its prix-fixe dinner, but we like it best for drinks and a light bite.
Amazing. Can’t wait to come again.
We enjoyed the unique character of the layout. The service was attentive but relaxed. We liked all the food, especially the risotto. It was excellent. The desserts were very well done, flavors were rich and extraordinary.
This is my third visit to Iron Gate. Always impresses! Fantastic food done in the most creative ways. Their space is so creative with both garden and dining room seating. The three of enjoyed a great meal and desserts for $120 so not over-the-Top expensive either. I’ll be back!
Romantic setting for sure! Feels like New Orleans French Quarter...food was delicious!
Love the venue and each of the different areas to dine in are very unique. It was too chilly to eat outside the day we were there so I will have to come back. The food is delicious and fresh. The flavors were perfect together and the amount of food was perfect for lunch. I recommend going and enjoying.
Everything about this place is wonderful, except the dining room where we were seated had an unpleasant, sort of fishy smell (but not the smell of fresh fish being cooked). You got used to the smell after a bit, but not a great way to start your meal.
Good. Food was delicious and the environment was beautiful
Fantastic as usual. Our server was a delight and made great recommendations. I will be back!
Early reservation, right after opening. Seated inside the restaurant, a bit too cool for outside although we noticed many seated there when we left. Ordered drinks. Waiter did not provide a name and didn't go thru the menu or any specials. I ordered the octopus while my companion ordered the scallops. We had the Halloumi appetizer which reminded me of three breaded cheese sticks. The food arrived and the I found the octopus to be pretty salty. I've had octopus plenty of times previous and haven't found other places to prepare it with that much seasoning. My partner found large chucks of sand in the scallops. More than one and some quite large. Waiter checked on us but no offer on another round of drinks. We had dessert - ice cream and I tried the carrot cake which was very good.
Based on reviews this restaurant didn't live up to my expectation. The bar area inhibits people walking through. We had to push our way pass patrons at the bar. The table at the front door blocks the entrance. Who would want to sit there anyway? Suggest that the first table be removed. Really doesn't help create a welcoming.
Had lovely lunch with old friend. Enjoyed sharing feta appetizer and I liked catfish dish, which is not something I would ordinarily try. Waiter was kind to take several pics of us at the Gate after lunch!
Recommend the Cremini Mishroom Risotto and Bison Tartare
Amazing food and atmosphere but pretty slow. Would still return though but just can't have plans afterwards.
Great atomosphere with interesting menu. We were very underinprrssed with food and drink. Service was not up to the price we paid.
Everything from the hostess, to the table, waiter and food made what I planned to be a romantic dinner even more romantic.
The food was too salty
Excellent food and very knowledgeable and friendly staff. One if the best restaurants in the city
Absolutely fantastic; best scallops ever. Great drinks, desert, service, all stunning. What a great place. Warm atmosphere.
The food and wine pairings were exceptional. The patio is lovely and the staff attentive, knowledgeable without being over bearing - just perfect. I would highly recommend this fantastic spot!
My only suggestion is that the portion sizes were a bit large; we could have shared our dinner for two with four people.
Really enjoyed the experience. Pricey, but would happily go back.
Ordered Bison Tartare (excellent)stuffed meatballs (good) oysters (good), grilled octopus (good). Small plates, shared by 2, just enough food. Sean our server was knowlegeable about food and food prep. Bar staff slightly aloof. Bathrooms or lack there of need work.
This is a lovely restaurant. Ambiance, food and service were all wonderful. Anyone looking for a special evening won't be disappointed.
I love Iron Gate, it's my go-to restaurant in DC. I've been there over a dozen times through the years. However, my recent visit was a bit frustrating. When I made the reservation request, I called to request that my guest and I be seated in the garden. I was assured that we would be seated in the garden area for our dinner. My guest got there before me and was seated in the back. The garden area wasn't even open for guests. I have no idea was I promised a seat that isn't even available. Moreover, the host initially wouldn't let me guest sit without me, which was a problem because I was a bit delayed due to traffic. They then threatened to give away my table it I was late. When I arrived, my guest was seated in a table meant for 4 people, which was odd. A two-person table was available next to us. Normally, I love Iron Gate, but the chaos surrounding our table was a little disappointing.
We had a great experience, but not necessarily a fan of the "small plates" concept.
While the restaurant looks nice, the food options are very limited.
Food and service were excellent! Great atmosphere!
Always a wonderful experience at Iron Gate. Great cocktails. Great food. Great space.
Food was excellent, server was knowledgeable and professional (if a bit brusque). We were squeezed into a corner table that was very tight for two tall people, and the light above was out so we had to use candles and cell phones to be able to read the menu. Thoroughly enjoyed all the plates, though; would be keen to return (though might sit at the bar next time).
Food and ambiance was wonderful. Will definitely be back.
We came here for my fiancé’s birthday, and he enjoyed it so much that he promised to return to try the chef’s tasting menu next time and also said afterwards that “we should go out for nice dinners more often!” So thanks for making that point better than I ever could have! We’ll definitely be back.
Service was pretty horrendous which was disappointing as the meal was FANTASTIC!
It was lovely. The atmosphere is beautiful. The food was excellent. We had a terrific and experienced server. What more could we ask for?
Food to salty
Was ok not enough choices
Would not go back
Excellent place, it’s a little sad because the server wasn’t attentive to our table at all, (we are two minority girls) we felt a bit ingnored and we were given a bit of a bad attitude. We still tipped her well but we felt a bit uncomfortable.
It was an outstanding meal. Service was excellent. A great environment
We have gone for my husband’s birthday the last three years. This year the food just was not as good as previously.
My boyfriend and I had an excellent experience at Iron Gate for our one year anniversary! We had noted it was our anniversary on our open table reservation and they treated us to complimentary champagne and dessert to celebrate! Our server was very attentive and helpful and the ambiance is so cozy and warm. Overall, it was wonderful!
The place is full of historical stories and the atmosphere is perfect for business lunch or a special event
The family menu was great . We had an interesting selection of foods and good service
My partner and I got the family style meal, and it was almost too much food for 2 people, but were very satisfied with the diversity and selection and taste of the dishes. It was a long-awaited treat to eat there.
It was my boyfriend’s birthday. They brought us a special dessert and comped us. They couldn’t have been nicer. And it was walking distance to the hotel. I would absolutely go back.
