   We had a lovely evening for our anniversary with an attentive and pleasant waiter, T. What he lacks in experience he made up for in his warm and positive attitude. The food is good, but not stellar. They have a pretty limited selection of entrees and then ran out of the sea bass I was going to order. All of the staff were friendly. They really could use some updated outdoor chairs. Pretty uncomfortable. I realize upholstery won’t work on a patio but they could do better.

   Setting was very pretty- patio with bistro lights. Amuse bouche very promising, little house made crackers, crudite and white bean hummus (hummus could use salt and garlic, but was ok). Wait staff was ridiculous- cursed more than a few times and was overly familiar, cracking up at her own jokes and making a spectacle. Not congruent with the caliber of dining we were supposed to be having. She knew about the dishes (good) but disappeared completely to the point we had no refills or dessert opportunity because it got very late. The food: portion sizes small and all were under seasoned. Stand outs were sesame crusted feta on beets and grilled asparagus with jammy egg. The cauliflower with brussels was good, but at $32 we were expecting more- this should have been presented as a side dish that should have been $16 at max. The sea bass was underwhelming, a whole fish, but very small- about 3oz total of actual edible fish- at $52 this was presented as shareable, but it definitely was not. The chicken was ok- perhaps it was a cornish hen? It was very small. The monkfish with bacon also small portion and lacking in any type of flavor. Overall very meh experience. We were four adults celebrating a birthday, and other than the beautiful rustic setting, I would rate this a below par experience.

   Let me preface by saying this is one of my favorite restaurants for a special date night or business dinner. The patio is beautiful and the service was impeccable; however, a couple of dishes were over salted/under cooked and a member of their wait staff was a little “animated” and took away from the experience by yelling and bothering tables. There was also a patron who played their own music from their cell phone and nobody from the staff asked them to turn it off. It was giving TGI Friday’s energy.

   Tayvon (and I could be misspelling it, so forgive me) was exceptional. He knew the menu like the back of his hand. He offered great advice about dishes that paired well with each other and cocktails/wines that complimented them. He was prompt and observant. We loved the atmosphere. I was looking for a quaint and charming afternoon lunch and this proved to be the perfect space. I can't wait to return! The food was thoughtfully assembled. I appreciated that even dishes that consisted of many ingredients found a way to respect the taste and texture of each without any one flavor overpowering the dish.

   The focaccia was amazing. The chicken was so tender I didn’t need a knife. The desert was unreal. And the ambience is 10/10

   One of the best restaurants I have ever dined at! Visiting DC from Colorado, and worth the trip just to eat at Iron Gate. Fabulous food, drinks, service and ambience. This is my second time dining at this establishment, and I will make a point of returning to this amazing restaurant next time I am in DC!

    Our go-to restaurant for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. We've only done the a-la-cart menu, but the food is consistently delicious and the atmosphere and service feel very special. Highly recommend the focaccia.
