Iron Gate in Dupont is known for its prix-fixe dinner, but we like it best for drinks and a light bite.
Fantastic experience! Food was amazing and service was excellent. We will definitely be back!
I noted on the reservation that we were celebrating a birthday. From the moment we arrived, the service was amazing, words can’t describe how flavorful and delicious the food was. They presented a birthday dessert as well without prompting. Fabulous evening - we can’t wait to go back!
Excellent food and wait staff.
It is such aa special place. You arrive because you want great food, ambiance and service. You smile and leave there enriched in every way.
Beautiful patio with wonderful food. Limited menu but everything is done very nicely. I truly adored the place - spent a bit more than expected but it was enchanting!
Arrived at Iron Gate for an 8PM reservation at approximately 5 minutes before our scheduled time and was told it would be a 15-minute wait for an outdoor table. We ended up waiting close to 30 minutes, which would have been a problem except that the meal more than made up for it. The halloumi in particular was outstanding, as well as the custom mocktail made for me by the bartender. Four of us shared around eight plates + dessert. Highly recommend the doughnuts, if they're available. And the ambiance, of course, was stunning.
Food was delicious, the atmosphere was incredible, staff were extremely knowledgeable and told us the history of Iron Gate. Highly recommend.
Absolutely amazing. Food was fantastic, staff were attentive and it was one of the best meals for me and my fiancé were very impressed.
The wait staff was fantastic! The chef’s tasting menu option was one of the best experiences we’ve had in DC. Just the right number of courses and a diverse mix of tastes, portioned well. The lobster risotto balls were a highlight, as well as the calamari bucatini.
The white bolegnese is worth the trip. Very good food.
Kevin provided us with excellent service. He explained the menu well and suggested a wine we liked a lot. I was disappointed by the menu -- not as varied as I remembered from an earlier visit. Everything we ate was dlicious, I just thought the selection was a bit too limited. Overall experience was excellent.
We did the sample type plates where it was fixed price. We don’t eat meat so they accommodated us with a fish option. Every dish was wonderful, and we sampled 5 appetizers, 4 entrees and 2 desserts, plus they brought out a special dessert for my husbands birthday. It was a perfect dinner!
Loved Iron Gate! Celebrated my birthday on the patio with my partner and we had a lovely time. Highly recommend for a special occasion. The wisteria covered patio is absolutely lovely.
Third time we've eaten here and sad to say it will be the last.
First time was great - couldn't have been better. Second time, they put us on the patio in sub-freezing weather on Valentine's Day - I don't remember anything but the cold.
This time the food was excellent, but somewhat overpriced. Service was excellent, but frosty. A warm demeanor would have made so much difference.
Iron Gate is our happy place. Best everything around.
Group of friends came to celebrate a special occasion. Everything was wonderful from the wine, food, service, to the ambiance. Highly recommend.
Food was disappointing. I have no more to say. I have no more to say.
We ordered several dishes and they were all good however the spinach salad with gorgonzola cheese was a little over powering and the catfish was too salty for our taste. The deviled eggs were excellent and the doughnut pancakes were good as well.
Had an outstanding meal over about three hours and tasted our way through much of the menu. Many highlights! (carrots, oysters, asparagus, octopus, bruschetta--all terrific! and the gnocchi was out of this world!) Our waiter, Sean, was knowledgeable (yet humble, true) and all of his recommendations were spot on. We were all over the menu, so i was concerned about matching a wine (or wines as it turned out) to the meal(s). Sean's suggestion of Frappato for its versatility and vibrant fruit was brilliant and very satisfying. Later, when we got to entree, a collection grilled meats, Sean brought a couple of Greek wines (a younger and older version of the same grape) that just blew us away. We not only experienced an outstanding meal but had a revelation of sorts, and by the end of the night Sean was more of a friend than a waiter. Couldn't have been happier with the experience. Great atmosphere. Serious food. Unique wine list full of surprises. Perfect Service. Cant wait to go back...
Can't wait to come back. Already planned our labor day weekend in DC and will soon make reservations for dinner.
We were looking forward to dinner here after reading about the restaurant online. The number of options seemed limited, the service was so so and the food was ok. The ambiance was not great. Wish we would have spent our one night in DC with our daughter somewhere else. It's a decent restaurant that didn't live up to its reviews.
Fantastic service and food.
Anniversary dinner was great and the outdoor patio gave the dinner an romantic ambiance.
We enjoyed the food options; excellent flavor and presentation. Also liked the outdoor atmosphere.
Beautiful thoughtful dishes!
Wish we had planned enough room for the
Tasting menu- it looked like an amazing deal and experience.
The courtyard dining is peaceful and the renovations including bathrooms are chic.
The gnocchi, crostini and focaccia were very good. The burrata was obviously frozen and then not fully thawed when it was served. The beet and walnut spread was uninteresting. Service was great, great ambiance.
What an excellent restaurant. The wait staff was attentive and provided great wine recommendations - even samples! The food was spectacular. We got the homemade focaccia, the battered halloumi, asparagus and mixed grill.
If it's your first time, you have to get the mixed grill! It has a interesting variety of meats and is a treat when celebrating a special occasion.
I would recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing evening of eating and drinking.
Our server was very friendly and attentive. The gnocchis was amazing, and outdoor seating was very pleasant. I can’t wait to go back there with my wife.
Had to wait for the table even though we had a reservation. There were people waiting for even longer. Got a table by the kitchen entrance and there was an unpleasant smell. When we tried to order they were out of some key item in the menu. Server said there was nothing he could do about that, which is true but it is odd that they were out of stuff so early. We ended up leaving and going somewhere else.
Was very disappointed in our time at Iron Gate. We were celebrating a birthday and requested to sit outside on the patio. Unfortunately, we weren’t lucky enough to get a table outside. Having been in the service industry I understand not everybody can have what they request, so it wasn't a big deal. However, we would have appreciated the hostess communicating to us why our request was not met, and to have given us a nice cozy table somewhere inside. Instead we were sat at one of the least desirable tables in the middle of the dining room. The hostesses tried multiple times to sit a similar table next to us and three times the patrons requested a different table.
Table preferences aside the service was terrible. Our waiter started off by giving us water right away but failed to offer to explain the menu or provide suggestions/ recommendations(6:30 PM). After seeing him initially he didn’t return for another 15 minutes to take our drink order (6:45PM). It then took another 15 minutes for our drinks to arrive delivered by another server (7:00 PM). 30 minutes into our time, we had only seen our waiter twice, greeting and ordering drinks, and still had not placed our food order. We finally ordered our food (7:10PM), and proceeded to not see our waiter for the next hour. An hour after arriving we had only received our drinks and focaccia that we had ordered (7:37PM). As our plates slowly arrived over the next 30 minutes our waiter did not once come over to ask how we were enjoying our food. We both finished our drinks and it took the waiter 15 minutes to come over and ask if we'd like refills (8:00PM). At the end of the meal we asked for the check, 15 minutes later it arrived (8:15 PM). We immediately gave the waiter the card, ready to get out of there, but alas it took him another 15 minutes to even run the card. We finally left after 2 hours (8:30PM) extremely dissatisfied.
While the food was good, it was not exceptional and the service alone is a reason to never re
Iron Gate was recommended by a friend that lives in DC and is a foodie. It was in her top 3. I took my wife for our 20th anniversary. I added a comment (ref anniversary) to the reservation on Open Table to try and get a spot in the outside seating area, which we did. Romantic, great food, top notch service is what will keep us coming back. The server must have been told that it was our anniversary because he brought out a free dessert with a chocolate card on top reading "Happy Anniversary", which tells me they go out of their way to make a customers special day even more special.
Our first time at Iron Horse was for a birthday celebration. We ordered the chef's menu and drinks. While I appreciate that most of the courses had seasonal and local vegetables, I would not come back for the food. It was mediocre at best.
There's no point to going to Iron Gate in the Spring or Summer unless you can get a table outside on the patio. Having made a reservation three month in advance, we were notified the day prior to our reservation that the patio was being used for a private party. The "nice" table they gave us was in dark, depressing room. It was like eating in a cave. Food was fine.
I thought the menu could be improved for lunch. More salads with protein.
Superb food, especially the pastas. The service is also first-rate. The patio is spectacular, but the chairs are not terribly comfortable. It's time to replace them.
Incredible food, amazing environment and kind staff.
How this place doesn’t have a Michelin star yet is beyond comprehension. Best gnocchi in the city. Great service. Wonderful atmosphere.
Gathering was for Mother's Day celebration and college graduation. It was perfect! Food was outstanding; service wonderful; and we particularly enjoyed not being rushed through our meal.
The food is great, and the inside dining room has always been nice in winter months, but this night in May the dining room was way too warm - almost as if the AC was off - which is especially noticeable at this restaurant when many of the food selections are rich, spicy or meat-oriented (i.e., winter food). When spending this kind of money you expect the atmosphere to be more comfortable. We hurried through our dinner, didn't enjoy it as much, and skipped dessert because of the temperature.
It’s very charming with delicious, fresh food, all presented beautifully! I adored sitting on the patio under greenery on a beautiful Spring day. The service was very good, too.
