Excellent wine list, food, and service! I highly suggest the mixed grill plate- cooked to perfection.

Sat in the whimsical garden/patio area. It was the perfect place for a date night. Portions were just enough and our server was attentive and knowledgeable. Love the history behind the place and the overall vibe. There is a reason this place is so popular!

Had a great time at restaurant week and will probably be back for happy hour. The normal prices are a bit high, but I think there's a lot of good options and it's a very nice looking place.

We loved this restaurant's food and service during a prior visit, but this was a disappointing dinner. Service was slow, timing of dishes was poor (the wine arrived after the first dish), we had to ask several times for things and even though I explained we were celebrating a special occasion, there was nothing special about dinner. The food was very basic, not memorable and tiny portions. And the restaurant was sweltering hot inside. I would not return.

I went to Iron Gate for Restaurant Week after having heard about the place for years. It is one of Washington, D.C.'s oldest restaurants, housed in what used to be the stable of a Civil War general off Dupont Circle, and recently underwent a refurbishing.

As with most Restaurant Weeks, Iron Gate offered a three-course menu -- an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert. It was somewhat odd that the regular Restaurant Week brunch menu had a prix fixe of $35, while you could order three courses off the regular brunch menu for less.

I chose the doughnut holes in orange-honey syrup for my appetizer off the regular menu since they'd been recommended in other reviews. In doing so, I passed up the arancini, which looked interesting.

My main course was fried blue catfish served on a bed of corn and cucumber tartar. It was fine although the fish could have stood another minute on the fire.

Finally, I opted for the cheese tray over the various fruit-oriented desserts. The cheeses offered were a homemade feta (Iron Gate is advertised as a Mediterranean restaurant)., a "dirty" cheddar", a blue, along with almonds and a locally harvested honeycomb. My favorite was the blue, followed by the feta. The honey was nice but kind of a hassle to eat.

All in all, the visit satisfied my curiosity and Iron Gate is a handsome place with outside as well as inside seating. The service was adequate, friendly but maybe a little bit slow. Which sort of sums up my visit -- it was nice but not a life-changing experience, the kind of place you try on Restaurant Week. Maybe the regular menu is more exciting.

I went there for a brunch. We were sitting outdoors in their courtyard. The waitress was super weird, made me very uncomfortable. She kept forgetting bringing our coffee and water. Besides that, I got six mosquito bites, made my two ankles swollen (yes my skin is super sensitive to bug bites). I couldn’t enjoy the food because of too many mosquitoes. I’m not picky about food. But their chocolate torte doesn’t taste anything but pure bitterness. It’s first time in my life that I didn’t enjoy a dessert.

This was my 2nd time at Iron Gate and it did not disappoint! Went with my fiancee for date night during restaurant week and the menu included items from their normal menu, which were all delicious. We got the Dakos salad, lamb meatballs, the blade steak, ravioli, and ganache. Flavor wise, the lamb meatballs were my favorite but everything was tasty. We sat outside in the patio, which is one of my favorite things about the restaurant as the strung up lights lend a nice ambiance.

It was our first time at Iron Gate but we've wanted to come for a while and finally took advantage of Restaurant Week. The garden space is lovely but because it was so hot we sat inside. Our server was so kind and helpful. Food was delicious. Really liked the selection of wine by the glass. I can't wait to return and try the regular menu.

Second time visiting Iron Gate and the first experience was much better. The food was good, but Iron Gate’s true quality is the atmosphere. One of the prettiest, more romantic restaurants in the city. However, the service is what really kept this experience from being top notch. Despite having dinner at 6pm on a Wednesday when it wasn’t busy, we had to wait at least 15 minutes for drinks/refills on 3 separate occasions. Coupled with the waitress repeatedly forgetting our drink orders, the service left us slightly disappointed. Overall, we have written it off as an off night. We would still recommend it to others if for no other reason than to experience the atmosphere. We will most likely return in the future.

Food was well-prepared with great flavor. The vegetables were lightly sauced and complimented my blade steak perfectly. The salted carmel was a beautiful foil for the rich chocolate tart and the light chantilly cream provided a nice contrast. Cannot wait to bring friends here.

They seated us 30 min after our reservation and service was very slow. We arrived for our 8:45 reservation and finally left at 11:15. I thought going on a Monday would be quieter but that was not the case. The staff were very busy and rushed, especially at the bar where they were openly complaining about it to each other. The portions were also very small (entree pasta had 4 ravioli) so recommend having a snack beforehand.

The patio area and lighting is beautiful throughout so at least it was nice to look at for 2+ hours. The hostess was also very understanding and helpful.

Went for Restaurant Week. Menu was great, something for everyone. Monk fish wrapped in bacon was delicious. I always appreciate restaurants that take advantage of seasonal ingredients, like fresh local tomatoes. Stone fruit tart for dessert was also a nice summer treat, and not overly sweet.

We went to Iron Gate during Restaurant Week and had a very mixed experience. We both had the lamb meatballs, which were exceptional. My husband had the monkfish and was very pleased, with both the portion size and taste. I had the zucchini ravioli and was very disappointed. I realize they specialize in small plates, but there were only four standard sized ravioli and two slices of zucchini in the serving. Despite this, the service was good, although our server appeared stretched. We'll definitely give it a second try since most reviews are very positive.

Great value for the money. The gnocchi and meatballs dissapointed...but the bruschetta, feta melon skewers and fried halloumi with berries were delicious. Our drinks were fantastic. Especially the raspberry mezcal B starlet. Patio seating is very romantic.

The food was great but the service was lacking. Once we were seated it took about 10 minutes to get our water and then 5 more minutes to have the server come get our drink orders. Once we got our food and had finished our server walked by us at least 4 times, going to every table but ours, when we were clearly finished. We would have gotten dessert but based on how long we had to wait to even be glanced at, we decided to finish our meal else where. We came from out of town for our anniversary so it was a bummer of an experience. I don’t ever plan on returning and wouldn’t exactly recommend it to anyone. The only positives are the beautiful outdoor patio and better than average food.

After walking by this gem for almost three years, the stars finally aligned and I secured a dinner reservation here. We ordered focaccia, ricotta gnocchi, lamb meatballs, and a dessert to share—all of which were excellent. The house sangria was perfect for a summer evening on the patio. Definitely hope to come back!

This was our first visit to Iron Gate for our anniversary. My husband arrived earlier than I did, and enjoyed a gin & tonic in the cozy but ornate bar. We dined under twisted vines on the outdoor patio and the music selection was lively Brit pop. (I peaked into the indoor seating, which looks perfect for a more formal occasion or a winter respite.) Our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and wine selections, offering tastings before proceeding with full pours. (This helped as my first choice would've been too sweet.) The menu--Mediterranean-influenced small plates--had enough variety to be lively and allow for trying something adventurous while also having enough favorites to offer safer choices for the less daring. The gnocchi were superb little pillows and the focaccia perfectly buttery and delightful. Our server even presented us with an anniversary dessert gratis. We truly enjoyed the meal, the service, and the atmosphere and look forward to coming back soon.

We and our friends enjoyed an excellent lunch at iron gate as part of our visit to DC for the National Geographic show about Egypt. Both the restaurant and the exhibit were marvelous. At iron gate we enjoyed unusual meals which were unique interpretations of Middle Eastern food taken to another level. Take arancini were a delicious and unique treat as an appetizer. The pork gyros were delicious, beautifully seasoned and nicely presented. The gnocchi dish was a bit spicy for my taste, but our friends really enjoyed it. All in all an excellent lunch, highly recommend it.

Had another delicious lunch at Iron Gate. I really enjoy their food (portion size is just right) and the ambiance within the restaurant. To be honest with you, every time I want to go and have a nice lunch I want to take my guest to Iron Gate that is how much I enjoy this restaurant. Plus it is steps away from the office so I really do not have any excuse not to frequent the establishment.

Bring repellent if you sit outside (they do have some but if you like a particular brand)...DC is a swamp after all.
Everything was beyond reproach but nothing sent us into a stream of superlatives .
We had the lobster for two...it was scrumptious but honestly it could have easily been a serving for one, the lobster though delicious was tiny.

Beautiful space, great service and good food.
You can’t beat the charm and beauty of this hidden patio and historic space. You are transported to a Greek Island as you dine under the grape arbor.
I wanted to love my whole experience. The setting is so perfect, service was top notch and the food was good. There were some items we ordered that were perfection. The grilled cucumbers with yogurt were refreshing and palate pleasing. The pastas has a nice toothy bite and delicious flavor. But many of the other dishes were cumbersome, salty and lacking in balance.
You will have fun perusing the wine list, tap beers and interesting cocktails. The Iron Gate has much to recommend it and is a delightful dining experience.

We loved celebrating our 14th wedding anniversary at Iron Gate. The setting is so atmospheric, the food was sublime, and the service was incredibly gracious. One small recommendation would be to install fans on the patio to help with air circulation. Otherwise the experience was amazing!

I took my husband to Iron Gate for his birthday. We arrived a few minutes before our reservation, and even though I requested patio seating, we were told there would be a 30-40 minute wait for the patio. I saw reviews from others describing a similar experience, which really doesn't make sense. My reservation was made before they opened, it shouldn't have been difficult to hold a table on the patio for our 8:15PM reservation. What made this even more insulting was the fact that there were at least four tables open on the patio.
Michelin says the food here is exceptional, but unfortunately our food was bland. We started by ordering the deviled eggs, crab and shrimp youvetsi, and bison. We planned to order the mix grill as well, but before we could finish requesting the small plates, our server took our menus and turned away. I was soon grateful for his poor service, as I believe it may have saved us from further disappointment. While the devil egg was tasty, the crab and shrimp was bland, and the bison wasn't even rare. My husband only eats his steaks rare, and even he said the bison was RAW. Not wanting to go to bed hungry, we requested our check and left to get food elsewhere.
The space is romantic, but the service was average. I only tipped our server 20% to avoid being stereotyped, but he honestly didn't even deserve 10%. I'm sure we won't be returning to Iron Gate, as our experience from start to finish was a pure fail.
