What Insiders Are Saying
Iron Gate in Dupont is known for its prix-fixe dinner, but we like it best for drinks and a light bite.
It was my boyfriend’s birthday. They brought us a special dessert and comped us. They couldn’t have been nicer. And it was walking distance to the hotel. I would absolutely go back.
Although food, value and ambiance were excellent, our experience was compromised by unfriendly and inattentive service by Jenna M. Even when she gave us a very dirty plate by mistake, she didn’t apologize and did nothing to make up for what was a pretty bad mistake.
I would recommend Iron Gate to ANYONE who wants a delicious meal with excellent wine and great atmosphere. We had been wanting to try Iron Gate for several months and finally went for brunch. All the anticipation was worth it! Iron Gate exceeds expectations in every restaurant-related category. When you go, be sure to try the doughnuts with orange blossom honey. Delectable!
We look forward to returning. The server (Shaun) that we had was outstanding. We also liked the seasonal food choices.
Beautiful venue to have a romantic outing. The food was tremendous as we got the chefs table
Service, food and superb drinks/wine recommendation.
First time here and could not have been more impressed. The setting is so charming. The grilled meat plate for two was phenomenal with crispy potatoes that are insanely addictive. I also loved the grilled octopus plate, salty and charry flavor, and the accompaniments are delicious. Our waiter was also super informed about the menu and great.
Truly one of THE BEST meals I’ve ever had in DC. The chef’s tasting menu at $59 per person MAY be the best dining value in the entire DMV. So much food. And every bite delicious.
Lovely evening. It's very old and cave-like--wonderful on a cold night. Drinks were excellent and the food had a great combo of sweet/sour; crunchy/creamy. Loved it.
Absolutely delicious! Would definitely go again.
Sat outdoors with heaters; great space. Small plates were tasty, but they were out of a few larger options. We were not charged for a mistake on one order. Service was very slow at the start, but got better later in the evening.
Love Iron Gate for the food. Could improve the service by training the staff. High turnover of staff.
Both the service and the food were great. They went above and beyond to make our anniversary special.
What a great find! A romantic restaurant with great service and even better food. Everything we tasted was simply amazing. And the one thing that wasn't fantastic was taken off the bill when they saw that we didn't fully enjoy it. Highly recommend!
A unique to DC establishment. Step back in time to a converted carriage house bar and a cozy fireplace den (winter) or outdoor patio with heirloom wisteria vine (summer). Food is flavorful and perfection. Portions are small, but well worth it.
Exceptional. Seat by the fire, excellent food, exceptional service. We come 3-4 times a year as part of a date night. Inside, outside, doesn’t matter. Go, enjoy. Have some wine.
It continues to provide creative players full of flavor, textures and interest. Life this place.
Romantic, yes. But you can hear every coversation from every table. The set up between tables is so awkward; the waiter continously had to reach across our table to serve the table next to us etc. Foods are delicious but very small portion wise; some menus were very average and mundane while some dishes were exceptional. Overall, I don't think I will be coming back.
Absolutely outstanding food! We ordered the "Feed your family" option and had one delicious item after the next. Would absolutely return.
The hype is real and Iron Gate did not disappoint! Took my mom for an intimate birthday dinner in the carriage house and we were blown away. The food was amazing, atmosphere cozy and our server rocked pacing and reading us. Can not say enough good things about this place and I'm excited to go back in the summer to sit in their beautiful patio area.
We really enjoyed the meal, the experience, and the ambience..
Iron Gate came highly recommended, and I understand why: the location is historic and the ambience is inviting, warm, and good for any occasion. But the food is very forgettable. In fact, having only been there two days ago, I don't remember any of the dishes we ordered. Let me consult their menu.
I'm back! We ordered the Sesame Crusted Feta, Roasted Mushroom Arancini, Crispy Catfish, Ricotta Gnocchi, and the Burger.
Of the above, the Feta is ABSOLUTELY worth getting. It is delicious and very unique.
Roasted Mushroom Arancini: very heavy on the cheese, and far too light on the mushroom. The cheese flavor and smell really overpowers the arancini. I am not a chef, but I wonder if this dish would be better served with a milder cheese (not as pungent) and more mushroom stuffing?
Crispy Catfish: not so crispy. Batter was doughy and bland. Catfish needed more seasoning.
Ricotta Gnocchi: Delicious, pillowy gnocchi that were totally stunted by FAR TOO SALTY red sauce. Would have preferred them in a white sauce.
Burger: just your regular, run of the mill burger. Have had better, have also had worse. For the price, not worth it.
I would skip Iron Gate, or go for the ambiance but don't bank on the food.
This is a restaurant I have being dying to try and I was able to get a table at the last minute. The entire lunch dining experience was top notch. Our server was on point, able to provide a thorough explanation of the menu and suggested some excellent food and wine choices. The service was quick and very professional and the food was awesome. Honestly one of the best lunches I have had in DC. Will definitely be making another visit.
Food was delicious! We
had a wonderful time at iron gate, as always! always looking for an excuse to come back.
Loved the room with real fireplace. It was very cozy for a winter dinner. The menu is creative and all of our dishes were tasty. I particularly enjoyed the shrimp scampi with homemade pasta and a dark chocolate mousse for dessert.
Iron Gate was charming, delicious, creative and healthy. Especially lovely to sit in front of the fireplace on a chilly day.
Good food and excellent service, but an exceptionally noisy room on the evening that we dined there. Did not help to have a large male adjacent who seemed to think that bellowing was the solution. Not exactly the quiet, celebratory evening that we had planned. Why can't D. C. restaurants introduce simple fixes to reduce the noise level?
Iron Gate is a favourite. The only thing is that sometimes it is quite noisy and a difficult place to have a quiet work conversation. Food is delicious if a little pricey. More options on the menu would be welcome! The service was very nice, thank you!
The food is always great! Particularly the smaller small plates, like the squash or the oysters. Things you think will be simple are often amazing - last time it was the carrots, this time it was the gnocchi. I was not a fan of my cocktail this time or the first time I went, but I love their beer program and of course they have an extensive wine list. For a fancy DC meal, it really doesn't break the bank.
We enjoyed our evening and meal. The service was great and the food was fabulous. We will go back again.
Wonderful meal on a cold winter day by the fireplace. The Shrimp Scampi and the savory meatballs were so flavorful and special. Carrot cake sundae was creamy delicious and spiced just right. The chocolate mousse was bittersweet and extraordinary.
Outstanding service and ambiance. Get the Gnocchi.
The family style was perfect. So much delicious food. A perfect cozy place for our anniversary dinner. Great food & even better service.
Had an amazing time on my anniversary drinks & dinner. A very special time. The ambiance and service topped everything. Thank u.
Bit pricey & road to restaurant is in desperate need of repair. But overall, this was one of the best dinners we’ve had in D.C.! Will for sure be going again!
What an amazing find. The menu selections were only topped by the food itself. Great space with a fire to take the chill away from outside. We will be back!
We very much enjoyed the ambiance, which was warm and welcoming. Three of us had the catfish entree, which was quite delicious and not too heavy. Our great thanks and appreciation to our waiter/wine steward, who was very knowledgeable and talked with great fluency about the different wines on your unusual wine list. We stayed for nearly three hours over lunch, and none of the staff made any attempt to eject us as having stayed too long--good to know when you're getting together with good friends for a long catch-up.
They brought us a beautiful free dessert to celebrate our pregnancy.
Best exp ever had. Good Ambience, Not Pricy, Good Service
