What Insiders Are Saying
Iron Gate in Dupont is known for its prix-fixe dinner, but we like it best for drinks and a light bite.
The service was inattentive and unfriendly when there was any. It was incredibly slow and the restaurant wasn’t all that busy. The waiter never apologized after forgetting drinks or for the 3 hour wait that became our meal. The food was good, but overshadowed by the horrible experience. I had a similar experience a few years ago, but wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I wouldn’t return or recommend.
Fun time with my beautiful girlfriend, quaint and romantic brunch.
The food was great, which I expected because of previous reviews, but the service was top-notch. I mentioned when I made my reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary. They not only gave us a pour of prosecco when we arrived, but a small complimentary personalized desert. It really made our date so special.
Outstanding food, service, everything. Highly recommend. Excellent atmosphere as well.
Restaurant Week Outside in January! It was so unique and fun to sit under the dormant wisteria with blankets and fire pits in the courtyard. Even though the temperature was in the 30's, we were perfectly comfortable. The warm sangria helped! The food choices for restaurant week were great -- all four of us were very happy with our choices.
Excellent. A lovely restaurant with a relaxing ambiance. A fireplace in the main dining room, outdoor dining space even in winter, and a charming small bar. The food is superb.
Went on Restaurant week for lunch. Sat by the fire. Food was delicious!
Unique restaurant with exciting food. The service was very good and the atmosphere was charming. We tried some excellent eateries during our 3 day stay in DC and Iron Gate was definitely worth the visit.
My boyfriend and I went to Iron Gate for lunch during the 2019 winter restaurant week. Despite the rush, the service was extremely attentive and prompt. We were seated right by the fire in the main dining room (pro tip: arrive early to score this spot!) and were very satisfied with the restaurant week offerings.
This is a great spot for a date, anniversary dinner, or occasion meal and we look forward to returning!
Food ok, but pricey and with small portions. The dining room was really cold, half of the people kept their coat!
The experience was Great!!!! The service was outstanding...
Made a reservation and they were completely overbooked. Our reservation was for 9 pm and we didn’t sit down until 9:50. Such a late dinner already made even later. They did do free drinks while we waited but we were so hungry it was hard to not stay salty about.
Amazing food - gnocci some of best I ever had
Great cozy spot , esp. with fireplace for winter & patio with grape arbor in warmer weather. Tasty food, interesting menu & unusual architecture. Enjoy!
Nice place, food was fine, prices were fine. Thought it would be more fun exceptional with all the hype.
This is some of the best food I have ever tasted. I just got home and I am making another reservation right now!
We enjoyed a dinner at Iron Gate during restaurant week and loved it! This was our first visit, but won't be the last.
Overall our experience was exceptional. My wife and I went for dinner on the opening night of Winter Restaurant week. We had high expectations based on the numerous outstanding reviews and we were not disappointed. The ambiance is wonderful, you feel the history of the building, the decor and lighting made our experience intimate despite being in a room of 50 people. I had a house cocktail (Coastal Plane) that I thought was great, if a bit sweet, and the wine suggested paired with out food very well. The food was fantastic, the choices were interesting, original and executed perfectly. Our only observation was our server seemed to be rushing us through the meal and exuded a sense of discontent. But it certainly did not detract form our enjoyment of the visit. I would go back in a second, next time to enjoy the courtyard as it looked fantastic.
This is the second time we have been to Iron Gate and, while it was good, it was a let down from our first visit. It could be that we were just spoiled the first time around- we had an excellent waitress who explained the menu in detail, talked us through wine choices, and did her best to honor my requests for flowers-when that didn't work, giving us complimentary prosecco and dessert. This time when my request was unfulfilled to provide flowers, nothing was said to acknowledge it, much less create a substitute. Also, the Mixed Grill on their menu is delicious, but about a quarter of our meat was room temperature or cold-which was particularly disappointing for the bison steak. The server was also a bit short with us, not explaining the menu very well and then berating you when you tried to look it up yourself to get a better idea. Honestly, other than the food being a bit cool this time, it would have been great if there was better service. While I believe Iron Gate is a solid choice, I chose it for our two year anniversary and if I knew what I do now, I would have gone with another choice.
Wonderful food and service. Will definitely return.
Pleasantly surprised! Food was delicious! Would recommend to a friend
Great food, the dining room was freezing cold (in January) and noisy.
Iron Gate never fails to disappoint! My husband and I arrived right as they opened the dining room on a very cold night. We got a table right across from the wood-burning fireplace, which gave the perfect ambience.
We had the family style meal, with three amazing courses. The server was exceptional as well. Great place for a special night out!
This was a bit overpriced for the portions. Two salads, two coffees, and two deviled eggs (one order) came to $21 before tip.
Went for business lunch. Food was excellent, service we pleasant.
We ordered an appetizer a salad and and a small small plate. The small plate came out after a long wait. It was meatballs, when I asked where are salad and appetizers where they said opps sorry computer glitch. Never apologized or offered to make it better. Too bad. Lovely place.
The food was much better the first time!
The restaurant charged ridiculously high prices for miniscule portions: $18 for two slices (yes, slices!) of sausage and a finger (yes, a finger) of lentils. $20 for three pieces of ravioli. they had nothing but such small plates on the menu for New Year's eve. A complete rip-off! Never again. We had to find take-away hamburgers elsewhere to assuage our hunger. Some New Year's eve...
Thé upstairs, stairs, walls and bathrooms need to be completely redone and cleaned
Amazing. it was my boyfriend & I’s 3 year anniversary and I booked a reservation for New years eve here and let them know and the service was amazing and they gave us complementary champagne and congratulated us. Loved it thanks so much Iron Gate staff for making my anniversary special!
Anniversary meal. Got table next to fireplace awesome ambiance and service.
Fastidious attention to detail. Delicious and creative blend of flavors and ingredients. Attentive service. Excellent wine list
So good! They do brunch really well and it’s reasonably priced. They have a great beer menu, as well
Great food, cozy ambience and welcoming staff made this a perfect place to have lunch out with my son. Wonderful.
We had a fantastic experience at Iron Gate. Our server Sean was very accommodating and close by without being intrusive. We wanted a romantic dinner, as we were on our babymoon and aiming for an intimate ambiance. Iron Gate was perfect. The food, the lighting, the perfect table by the fireplace, were all ingredients for a recipe of an excellent evening. We did a special 7-course menu and loved it all. Highly recommend.
We had one of the best meals we've ever had at a restaurant. Every course was delicious. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. We could not have asked for a better server. We also had one of the best wines ever, chosen by my daughter-in-law who is a Som. Will definitely go back.
Excellent in every way!! Highly recommend this restaurant for special occassions or happy hour! Amazing food, gorgeous atmosphere, everything was lovely...really!! So difficult to find these caliber of restaurants in a highly saturated town!! Chef Chittum does a great job!
Good food, cocktails and ambiance. Not a huge menu and maybe a tad overpriced for what you get, but overall, great experience
The restaurant did not honor reservation, and only told us so after 30 minutes wait. Hostess unprofessional. Average unattentive service forgot to even ask if we wanted desert
