Insalata's Ratings and Reviews
Service was horrible; 15 minutes before waitress came and took order; asked for bread and drinks and never brought; had to ask other staff for assistance. Waitress never checked on our table; there were 4 of us ding and my order came 7 minutes after the others. Also one salad not properly prepared.
Celebrated my birthday and it was wonderful as always. We started with two appetizers which we shared and we highly recommend- the Cataplana and the Crispy Herb Falafel. We all ordered different entrees. I had the Waygu Steak which was cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the Lamb Shank which was tender and delicious. My daughter enjoyed the Glazed Duck Breast. My son ordered the Casareccia pasta dish which he didn't like as much as he expected. We had three desserts which were all fantastic. We had the Pear Galette, the Sorbet Twosome and the Cassis Cremeaux. The wait staff was attentive and we were to chat comfortably while sitting at our booth.
We chose Insalata's to get together with a friend coming from Oakland. It was the perfect meeting spot since we're in Santa Rosa. The food on the brunch menu was yummy. Also minimal traffic on a Sunday afternoon. Their pear scone was to die for so don't pass it up. Enjoyed eggs benedict and variations thereof. Good any time.
I ordered the fattoush salad; which I have had in the past and enjoyed. This time the salad was smaller, very oily and salty. The pita chips were the size of tortilla chips instead of bite sized pieces. Seemed thrown together without much thought. We were seated directly in front of the kitchen which was noisy and cold due to people continuously opening the side door to come and go. I would definitely avoid this table!
I went there for a Thanksgiving pre-fix menu with a friend, after researching to find the best menu in Marin for the holiday. The food was absolutely wonderful! The service was excellent and we were not rushed on this special day. Started off with assorted breads and appetizer samples. My friend had a tasty salad and the butternut squash and pear soup was yummy. The turkey dinner was perfect, with four delicious sides and the pumpkin chiffon pie a fitting ending. My friend had the salmon dinner and raved. The wine by the glass selection had a lot of variety, great for the various courses. All in all a great time!
Our lunch group of 5 enjoyed ourselves. The mista salad was excellent, including the salmon add-on. Black pepper papperdelle with duck was milder than I expected, but tasty. Mediterranean Mezze was interesting and enjoyable. Wine list is interesting. A good place to go back to.
The food here is great, and the wait staff is good too. What wasn't so good is that I requested a booth, as two of our group have hearing problems. I even spoke to them about this before the date. When we got there, they'd given the booths to other people. We had more noise, and more draft from the door that if we'd gotten what we reserved. I'll go there again because the food is so good, but was very disappointed.
We were going to a show down the road at College of Marin starting at 7:30 and ending who knows when, so we made the latest reservation we could, 9:15. Then we got to Marin way early so decided to see if we could get in before the show, and this turned out to be no problem (in fact, they seemed a little amazed by our late reservation -- I think this crowd tends to be on the early side).
Food was really quite good. I had a butternut squash soup that had surprising mid-Eastern flavors in it, and my wife's autumn salad hit the spot. She had the roast chicken, which was terrific, and I had a roasted blue nose bass whose tomato sauce was anything but ordinary.
Service was genial but inattentive, and we had to wait so long for the dessert menus that we had no time to order any. To be fair, our waitress seemed like she was working very hard at a lot of tables, so maybe someone called in sick that night.
We waited an hour for food and were never checked on during our entire dinner. Never had water refilled. It took an hour to get our food, 2 customers who came in after us were served first and it was never acknowledged that the food took an obscenely long amount of time.
Loved the food ... especially the butternut squash and carrot soup, and autumn salad. Added plus was the deli selection ... where we admired the case of to go items, and picked a couple of delicious cookies to go! Thanks to a foodie cousin who recommended the restaurant on a Marin County outing for us South Bay folks.
We haven't been to Insalata for way too long. We used to come regularly when it first opened. We moved away for several years & have stayed closer to home in Larkspur since returning - big mistake. It was so worth the extra time. Truly authentic, creative food that we cook ourselves and love to have others do for us! Can't wait to come back!
Sometimes you are a victim of your own success. It was a busy Friday night and both food and service went a bit sideways. Service -- unsure if it was the kitchen or the server who was very friendly--was awkward. We started with the mezze plate, always a delightful sampler of appetizers. Then, we waited for 40 minutes or so for the entrees. Our neighboring table of 3 who ordered about 10 minutes after us got their entrees 15 minutes earlier. After a couple of follow ups with the server who said our dishes were being plated, she brought my duck. It took another 5 minutes for my partner's Cioppino to come up while my duck got cold. Did they really think I would eat while she watched? The duck was outstanding but the Cioppino was not a winner, sauce was too overwhelming and unnecessarily spicy. Generous portion and fresh seafood, but needs some work. Apple galette for dessert was wonderful.
We have dined here so many times and have had consistently exceptional food. We loved the autumn salad. For entrees the duck and salmon dishes were great - beautiful plates of food! Also enjoyed creative, refreshing cocktails. Would have had dessert but ran out of patience waiting for service.
Insalata's, as well as at least 25 other restaurants, are in my neighborhood... so there are a lot of choices. I choose Insalata's a lot... I've dined there many times. I keep going back because I am never disappointed.
Heidi, the Chef/Owner, has a very original way of using the Mediterranean herbs and spices... the flavors blend together like a symphony. I know that sounds corny, but go try it, you'll see what I mean.
