Opened in 2011, Indigenous has earned a reputation for being an inspirational and educational restaurant. For years, Indigenous has been known as one of America’s top restaurants, renowned for its passion for food, the community, and the planet. Indigenous’ menu of seasonal American cuisine changes progressively throughout the year based on peak ingredient availability. With a focus on sustainable seafood, we work closely with local fisherman, artisans, and farmers to maintain the highest quality. At Indigenous, we are always working our best to create a better food system. Owner Chef Steve Phelps has been a James Beard Foundation Semi Finalist for Best Chef South in 2014 & 2015, an Ambassador for Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Blue Ribbon Task Force, and a founding member and Chef for the EDF Coalition for Sustainable Aquaculture.

We have been to this restaurant numerous times. It’s a gem in our community. Food, service always top notch. Would highly recommend and we will definitely return. Thank you for a wonderful meal.

We have eaten there many times and it seems to drop in quality each time. I had the fish sandwich which at $34 is rather pricey - I expected a good meal. It was mediocre and fell apart… I don’t know if the buns had been frozen or what. It just isn’t the quality it once was.

Our go to restaurant in Sarasota. The food and the service is always spectacular. Last night’s meal might have been their finest effort to date. Triple tail in a curry sauce was truly remarkable

Our meals were unique, with a beautiful presentation and extraordinarily delicious. The best meal and experience we have had in a while.

This is not a real restaurant. It’s simply a converted house with poor ventilation and inadequate furnishings. The food was cold, the burgers we ordered were dry, poorly prepared, and also cold. There was no kids’ menu and no cocktail menu. Our waitress was polite and genuinely tried her best, but that couldn’t make up for the overall experience. Service was very slow, it was uncomfortably hot inside, and it’s honestly surprising that this place met any requirements to operate—let alone continue functioning as a restaurant. We left with a very bad aftertaste.

We come to this area at least once a year for many years. One thing we do every time we come is dine at Indigenous. The best fine dining restaurant in all of the Sarasota area.

We recently had dinner at Indigenous and, unfortunately, it didn’t live up to the high expectations set by recommendations. The space itself is cozy and inviting, and the service was above average, friendly and attentive without being overbearing. However, the food was a letdown. Every dish we ordered was severely underseasoned, almost as if the kitchen was rationing salt. For entrees, my fish was dry and overcooked, and while my wife’s smashburger was decent, it wasn’t anything you couldn’t get at an In-N-Out or Five Guys. This spot came highly recommended to us, and for the life of me I can’t figure out why. Maybe we caught it on an off night, but overall, the food didn’t justify the buzz.
