This review is hard because, I’m super proud of a black own/operated fine dining experience however I’m conflicted because I don’t want to be too critical.
Positives: the food is absolutely delicious! Undeniable. Buuut, the price is not worth the $$$.
Waitstaff/Servers very professional and the uniforms are trendy.
Negatives: I know of no fine dining experience that have table side entertainment that begs/haggles patrons for a tip.
Shocked that a 12% cc fee is added to the bill. Luckily I had enough cash to cover the $326 bill for 3 ppl (did not include alcohol)
Soft drinks are $5 per glass, no complimentary refills (fountain drinks at that)
The restaurant allows ppl (business owners) to go table to table passing out business cards, while patrons dine.
Tables are to close together. Patrons in the front have to move their chair to let ppl walking by pass.
These are some things I wish I’d known prior to booking a reservation.
I would recommend it if you want to grab a glass of wine and listen to some live music. I recently went to celebrate my birthday on 1/8/22 and we had to send our cosmos back due to them tasting like cough syrup and requested wine instead. I guess that upset the bartender because they made sure we got the wine we ordered well after our food was already eaten. When the food came it was small portions of food that was not seasoned well. We asked our waitress to bring us salt and pepper and she brought it about 15 mins later once the food was cold. I really wished it was better and I’m so sad about it because I am a huge foodie.
Nice place for a special occasion but food is over priced. I really liked the macaroni and the salad but everything else (my steak, and cocktails) was just “ok.” Very nice ambiance though. I would go back in the summer to see if the menu is different and to see what the summer vibes are like.
Best steak I ever had, hands down! Would definitely return!
Went for New Years Eve. Food was good but below average for the price. The duck was good/average, The Grouper fish was similar to a $10.00 fish and chips meal at your local diner. The presentation and quality of the popcorn shrimp appetizer was the most notable part of the meal (served in a mini popcorn machine). My wife and I enjoyed the French Onion soup. My wife actually liked the Mac & cheese, which should not be the highlight of a meal. The service was great, which was the saving grace of a 2 star rating. I’ve told friends I would not recommend it price to value. If they get their price in line with the food I would recommend it. Should have been $100.00 dinner, it was $170.00. You do the math as I’ve listed everything we had besides a Diet Coke and a Long Island iced tea.
Pack your patience! Food is delicious, yet the kitchen is sloooooow to send out the order, esp if there are large parties scheduled.
It was absolutely delectable! We enjoyed the experience!
Had a party of 12 for my mom's 60th birthday. I was confirmed a total of 3xs and was not once notified of a "one check" rule until the close of dinner. Our server tried her best, however she constantly disappeared and honestly the restaurant could have provided her assistance. I had to get the attention of the GM?, to get waters for the table more than once. Our drinks came at least 30minutes after we ordered. The first half of the party was served food after over an hour of ordering. There was an additional 20min until the Next half received their food. My rice for the salmon was hard, along with my wife and Aunt. Utterly disgusting. The lobster tail did not come out with butter. We had to wait about 18min for that to come out. Thankfully my mom loved her lamb chops so that ultimately saved it. My favorite was the fingerling potatoes. That was about it. One of the male servers was drinking at the bar and ran into me, obviously intoxicated. My advice is for Omar to come back and save his restaurant. The young lady in the office was curt and cold when explaining the one check rule. This operation gives strip club without strippers. A poor attempt at fine dining.
Steven was awesome! He made sure my bday celebration was amazing!
The food took over an hour to be served and honestly it wasnt good very bland
The food and service was excellent ,we had a dining experience , We also met Chef Omar It was an excellent evening, can’t wait to return.
The brunch food on Sunday was very costly for cold eggs and meat. The food is served buffet style and clearly if you don’t get there when brunch first starts none of the food was placed on warmers just left in metal food containers. The containers did have lids but still didn’t keep the food warm. I literally felt like I should have asked could they microwave my plate yes, it was that cold. Didn’t even finish or get half way through my plate . Your literally paying for the atmosphere. For $55 a person the food was cold not even fresh, plus a 26 dollar drink yeah this place has made my NEVER AGAIN list! It’s black owned and that’s what really motivated me to try it out to support my people however y’all should be ashamed of that set up of a buffet.
Buffet style food NEEDS warmers THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF BRUNCH not just in the beginning, breakfast food already doesn’t stay hot long. Maybe dinner is better but that this point won’t even risk it!
I’d rather not until I go a second time. I’m willing to give the benefit of doubt my first visit.
I wouldn't exactly consider this to be fine dining. There were timing issues with service. We ordered a bottle of wine and weren't provided a tasting opportunity it just went straight to the pour phase. The menu selection was pretty minimal.
The food was delicious. I had duck my husband had steak. The service was great. I don’t plan on returning anytime soon. The bill came to $207. A gratuity of $45 was added to the bill. That’s more than 20%. I was told to scan the bill with my cell phone. I kept getting an error message when I tried to pay that way. Finally the waiter took my credit card and swiped it. It went through without a problem. HOWEVER, I WAS CHARGED $10 FOR HIM TO DO THIS. THAT IS OUTRAGEOUS WHEN THE FAULT WAS NOT MINE, BUT A PROBLEM WITH THEIR PAYMENT SYSTEM. I would have tipped 20% which would have been $21. They charged me $45 for a tip. The $10 fee for them to swipe my credit card is a real turnoff for me as a customer. I won’t say I’ll never go back, but it won’t be anytime in the near future.
Love the food and atmosphere for Brunch. Staff was also amazing! Will definitely be back.
Not enough tables to accommodate early reservation. We almost had to eat our food on lap trays in an indoor cabana. I placed a reservation 2 days in advance for 12:30 Sunday brunch and confirmed twice. Upon our on-time arrival, I was told all the tables were reserved except the one by the freezing cold window. I did not want to sit by the cold window. They said my only other option was the bar. I continued to voice my concern about the poor logistics and over booking. We were placed in a cabana in which to eat our $55 per person plate of food, we would have to bend down to the plate on a low coffee table or eat from a lap tray!! I was no longer excited about this place and ready to go. Eventually, a manager came to our rescue and seated us at an appropriate table. As we were eating, I continued to notice the 4 semi-booths along the wall that were available when we arrived were never filled with people. I wonder why we could not have been appropriately seated on time in one of the two persons 1/2 booths instead of 45 minutes later at an eventual appropriate table.
The food was seasoned just so right and extremely delicious. The surprise of whimsical experiences were awesome and befitting to the name Imaginate and the staff was A-1 professional and extremely kind but the horrible logistics of seating experience will prevent me from returning for a 3rd time.
This was the worst dining experience my wife and I have had. First our table wasn't ready so we were given seats at the bar, during which time the bartender waived at us but never asked us for a drink order. Once seated, we waited over 20 minutes before the wait staff acknowledged us with a "hey" and no apology or concern. We ordered a nice bottle of Champagne, which arrived room temperature after a wait of 45 minutes. We had to flag down the staff to order dinner, at which time the waitress took my wife's order and walked away without taking mine and we had to stop her to get in my order. After 1.5 hours waiting we still had not received our salad (1st course). During the wait, a magician approached us, which was a welcome distraction and some pretty good tricks. However, at the end the magician attempted to take a $40 tip for the short entertainment when offered $20 (more than generous in my opinion). He also tried to solicit future work from us, which I felt was really tacky. A manager finally approached to acknowledge the wait and explained it was a slow dining experience. We have eaten at many fine dining restaurants and there is a major difference from a slow, but coursed experience and what we were getting at this restaurant. We finally received our main course but no salad. Food was barely warm and very underwhelming. I'd put it on par with room service at a mediocre hotel. We finally were offered the check and it had the salad we didn't receive. The manager did end up removing and providing a comp on the warm champagne. Unfortunately, way too little, way too late. We were initially so excited to have a nice, fine dining restaurant in Royal Oak. However, this is anything but fine dining and was really disappointing. We will not be returning, their is simply way too much going wrong here to give it another shot.
Overpriced bad and slow service. Need to focus on service vs gimmicks
Limited menu. A little overrated for the price point. Be cautious of all the fine print (i.e. fee if you need to cancel your reservation less than 2 days in advance, if you pay with a credit card at the restaurant, etc). The props etc felt a little gimmicky and not well connected to an "experience".
I had a great time, the service was great!
It was a nice place and very well put together. Yes, it's expensive, but the food is awesome. They do not have valet and that is the only downside when I was there. Other than that, my party had no complaints.
Very cute restaurant. Little loud because of the live music but it was fun. Great food presentation.
Danielle hostess, and Alex bartender were incredible. Overall ambiance was dope! Best Brussel sprouts in the city
The atmosphere was elegant, food was good service was excellent shout out to the waiter Zeke
Our waiter was fantastic . If im not mistaken Steve was his name . I hope i got it right 🤞🏼 He was amazing . Great food and the drinks were amazing i was definitely feeling good leaving this place . A little pricey so make sure your coming with some money . A dinner for 2 with a total of 3 drinks a piece was about $460 includes gratuity as well
I love this place ... Truly makes you wanna eat and stay
Great atmosphere. The service was good. I liked the added extras, music, fur coats and magician. The food was very tasty. I would like more desert choices. Great overall dining experience. I think the price for the brunch was a little expensive. I have been to high end brunches for $40 including mamosas.
Food could be better for how much it costs
My husband and I had reservations for over a month and were extremely excited to eat here for the first time. Unfortunately, when we left after 2.5 hours after our reservation time and only being served soup and an appetizer (which took 30 minutes to arrive to the table) we still had not had any of their entrees.
When a waiter that was not assigned to our table came to bring my Charred Tomato Bisque, I didn’t have a spoon and instead of getting me one, he said he’d get my waitress. I waited an additional 5 minutes for my waitress until my husband asked another waitress to assist, and she did quickly and kindly. Which was appreciated because I could tell she was having a hard night herself.
Tables that were sat at like 30-45 minutes after us were receiving their appetizers AND entrees and others had eaten and left by the time we finally spoke to a manager.
To add insult to injury, the manager offered to “accommodate the bill” by offering a free dessert and 10% off of the meal that we still did not have after 2 hours. The manager also stated that what we experienced was unacceptable but that even though other tables had been served before us, they were served all of there food. As if that made it better.
After all of that, our waitress whom we had not seen in over 30 minutes finally came back and had just half of our meal to which we asked for it to be wrapped to go as we were creeping to hour two and a half. She the disappeared for 15 more minutes. When she came back she said the other portion of our meal was still not complete. We offered to pay for what we had gotten and left.
We are extremely disappointed because my husband works in supervision which takes long hours and most days per week and this was our first opportunity to spend quality time together for in about a month. We were also celebrating the news of us adding to our family.
We will not be giving this restaurant another try as we felt invisible while there, and not properly addressed.
Where do I even begin!!! To keep this very short..had a dinner reservation for 4 people @8pm from the moment we walked in we had to wait about 5 min then when we got helped we had to be taken to the “waiting area” for 30 min then they finally got a table ready for us and by the time we got to order our food showed up @10 the appetizers were missing and the tomahawk was a bit cold & porter chop house steak was so bad had no taste and was definitely not cooked the way it was asked for..the carrots had no seasoning and showed up at the end with the plain nasty oily old fries in a car bucket that makes it even more disgusting to eat out of..I mean the whole experience was horrible…never again!!
Food was very good, and enjoyable; it appeared that the servers seemed overwhelmed and there were definite glitches. Some of the food could have arrived hotter, and there were some timing issues with delivery. For the price, expectations were naturally high, and I am a big fan of Chef Omar. All courses were very tasty, just expected a higher level of customer service for the price.
Brutal. Just bad. Manager/Owner was literally walking from table to table having to comp everyone’s meals. Prices are sky high…I feel like they know they’ll have to comp you so they build it into the price. 22% tip is also automatically charged…probably because the waitstaff wouldn’t get tipped otherwise. Avoid
I had a horrible experience. I booked a reservation and did not get seated until 40 minutes later. Once I sat down it took an hour and a half to receive my entree food. The server was not giving reassurance on when the food would be ready. The server was rude as well. The restaurant automatically puts 22% gratuity on the bill and the service was bad. I will not be going back.
Birthday Dinner, the only complaint I have is that the tables are way to close during this COVID PANDEMIC I’m a healthcare frontline worker and the tables are NOT 6ft apart that is very dangerous with people not being enforced to wear a mask inside the restaurant when not eating or drinking and walking around w/out their mask on.
Service was good. Food took too long and wasn't hot and wasn't worth the 250 I spent
Prices are too high. Table of 3 we received our food at different times. We had to ask repeatedly for appetizers. My salad was a $14 plate of lettuce. Everyone was rushing around and the quality was lost. GET RID OF THE JACK IN THE BOX. CHILDISH!
When we arrived for our 8:15 reservation, we were told there was no table for us and our friends. We were then taken to a lounge area, no drinks, where we waited until almost 9:00 only to be told that they had no idea when we would be seated. There was a problem in the kitchen and police had been called. We had to ask for updates. We were ignored unless we asked and then left to just wait. We left and went somewhere else where we were quickly seated and given good food and service.
Ambience was very nice; however the rest of the dining experience was awful. The presentation of the appetizer shrimp was ridiculous being served in a mini popcorn machine AND they were cold. The Mac and Cheese was watery and bland. Our server never refilled our water or asked if we wanted another round of drinks. Then had the audacity to add a 21% tip to our bill.
