Il Toscano - Douglaston Ratings and Reviews
This was as perfect as a dinner could get. I made my reservation on Open Table, explaining it was my wife's birthday.
We arrived an hour earlier than our reservation but were seated without hesitation. We were given two choices of tables and chose a table for 2 versus a larger one for 4.
My wife ordered a Pinot Noir, which was a large pour and delicious, while I had Makers on the rocks.
We were brought a basket of assorted breads, which is served cold with bottles of oil and balsamic vinegar.
We always share our dishes, which is our built-in way of cutting calories.
We started with the steamed mussels, which were amazing. Incredibly flavorful with onions, red peppers, jalapenos and apple wood bacon in the sauce. We needed another bread basket just to sop up all that delicious juice.
Then we shared the arugula and endive salad, also perfect, with honey crisp apples, pecans, cranberries, goat cheese in a vinegarette. Excellent!
Our main course was the lasagna bolognese. Wow. Huge portion and it literally melts in your mouth - so flavorful and delicious.
The waitstaff was attentive in just the right degree, neither too much or too little. For dessert, our waiter explained the options and we chose the Napoleon after reading so many reviews extolling its virtues.
A few minutes later, the entire staff came over singing Happy Birthday to my wife. I appreciated that they let us choose the dessert rather than making the choice for us.
Every rave review for this Napoleon is well-deserved. It is the lightest cream I've ever tasted and disappears as it hits your tongue. The crust is crispy, flaky and super fresh.
My wife was over the moon with the entire experience and it was a perfect, memorable evening. Kudos to the chef and the staff for a job well done!
The food is consistently good, which is the main thing you want in a restaurant, however the prices have gone up significantly. They are charging fine dining prices for a restaurant that isn't quite fine dining. Waitstaff is friendly and attentive, but definitely not on par with servers in fine dining establishments. Food is very good, not great, and the owner is friendly and always walking the floors and checking up on the regulars, which is a nice tough. The decor is pretty dated and could use some serious refreshing and the menu is a little frantic and lacks a bit of creativity. Italian staples such as Lasagna sit beside Asian preparations on seafood, so there is no consistency as far as a theme. For neighborhood regulars this is probably a welcomed comfort, but for the occasional diner and foodie you hope for some upward modifications.
We went on the worst dining out night, New Years Eve. We were waiting a half an hour for our table, and it wasn't a bother. Hung out at the bar for drinks. The main room was very crowded and energetic. Its a tight squeeze amongst the tables but it makes for a good vibe. The food was delivered timely and delicious. For some reason we don't go here often enough. Its really worth the extra drive time in the car.
The service was moderate to poor. We had an early time for dinner, (6pm) and we were clearly being rushed to order and vacate. While I was in the restroom, they attempted to remove my plate, with at least a half a meal remaining, my friends had to stop the waiter. Food was a real disappointment, I had their Signage dish of angry lobster, it was bland to say the least. Nice ambiance, however
This place is like a hidden dragon. It took us a little while to find it. When I stepped into the door, I fell into love with it immediately. I feel like home warm and cozy while it was freezing outside.
Great decorations caught my eyes. The restroom is so clean and spacious. The service is excellent. The waiters are well experienced. The food is so authentic and the price is reasonable. It was an excellent choice to try its Cabernet Sauvignon with house made pasta. I also got my favorite grappa after the dinner and had my first taste of Fernet Branca - my drink of course.
We had spent our New Year’s Eve at such a wonderful restaurant. We were so impressed and happy.
I was there with my mom on Christmas Eve
Sadly I was very disappointed . Place filled up soon after and most tables were served before us it took way too long
When my pasta dish came it was pipping hot perfect,my mother’s lamb chops were freezing cold.
Had to send back and wait for new order of lamb, so yes I ate my pasta while my mother had to wait for her lamb when I was done her lamb came out and waiter apologized saying it wasn’t his fault surely he didn’t want his tip to be in jeopardy . He said there was a mix up in the kitchen.
So now we have been sitting for 2 hours waiters too busy for me to ask for check so I got up and asked the host .so whilst waiting at bar for 15 minutes and asked again where is my check he said I put it at the table.mean while he was literally 1 foot away from behind me.
I took the check handed him my credit card with out looking at the price I was in a hurry at that point.yes I waited again watching the daughter of owner sitting at bar doing one bill after the other consistanly.
Waited again I turned around and asked the host where my bill was so I can sign you guessed it ,he put it on the table !!!! What an incompetent employee really stupid.
I actually left a 20%tip .
I expected at least the one dessert ordered would be on the house for our unpleasant experience but nothing.
Excellent food / dishes ,top quality and detailed presentation and service.
Lamb, fish, beef, lobster, pasta and salads excellent.
Desserts are good to very good, however do not match the quality of the meals/main dishes.
Drinks are generous, a surprise nowadays!!
A place to visit frequently!!
We are frequent long time customers. Sitting upstairs has become a nightmare. The service is poor and the dinner is very long. The downstairs dining is a pleasure. The reservations are lately not being honored by a reasonable time anymore either. Love the place but have had some complaints quite recently.
It'a been a few years since I've eaten at ll Toscano and thought it would be a good place to celebrate my girlfriends 65th birthday. We were seated on the top floor aka "Sky Room" and found the space to be chilly, yet less congested than the main floor. I ordered a glass of Super Tuscan and was disappointed by the short pour of a very tasty wine. The menu and specials were OK, somewhat limited. I had the lobster and was surprised to find the lobster meat had a breading. It was not a satisfactory dish. Others in my party also found their meals not equal to the prices charged. I'll probably won't return to ll Toscano.
I've been coming since I was a kid. Tight space, close tables, loud rooms, but wouldn't change it. Edited down menus from when we last dined at Il Tuscano. Though we saw no one waiting for a table the service was very rushed. They had our entre's at the table long before we finished our salads. Personally, being rushed in any restaurant on a Saturday night after I've had a long work week doesn't work for me. We were rushed all night. Server refilled my glass with the wrong wine . BUT he did bring a fresh glass and a fresh pour. The pasta with lamb was delicious and a very generous portion. The fish dishes were also generously sized and perfectly prepared. Excellent coffee, espresso and cappuccino. Can't wait to go back...
Had to wait 20 minutes on a Sunday to be seated. Waiter asked if we would like a glass of wine,
I ordered red and said any dry red is fine. When the check came we were billed $32 for one glass of ordinary red. Thought that was outlandish especially for a neighborhood restaurant in Queens. Food was just okay.
Never disappoints! Outstanding waiters and service. The food is always excellent and Alex is always there to greet you with a warmth not typical anymore. You feel truly welcome and a wanted guest. The food speaks for itself and their signature dish is a must if you enjoy lobster. I always enjoy my nights at Il Toscano and you will too!
