In writing this review, I'm concerned I won't be able to convey the quality of my experience with words. With that said, my best friend of 30 years and I had a rare few days away together to explore Portland. I happened to have a gift card for Kimpton properties and found the restaurant because of the card. We arrived early and went to the attached bar Bacchius. Upon entering, I loved the modern eclectic vibe of the hotel. The bar is unique and inviting and had two well dressed gentlemen manning the bar. They were so exceptional with their suggestions and creativity. They made ordering cocktails so much fun. Unique, delicious cocktails!
We took our drinks to the restaurant as it became time for dinner. Our server was Amy. My god this woman is the best server I have EVER had...and I dine. Because of my work, I'm at restaurants a lot. This lady didn't miss a beat. She helped made perfect suggestions, made sure our table was attended but not overly. As my friend and I would get into deep conversations, we were never interrupted, but never missing a single thing. The calamari was the best I've ever eaten, olives, radicchio salad, linguini and clams, raviolis, halibut. All so good! She let us split, half order and share dishes without hesitation. We ended dinner with a small scoop of heavenly gelato and amaretto on the rocks. So good.
We had such a great evening and even went upstairs to play a game of pool as weren't quite ready for the night to end. This is a great place to take a date, have a business dinner, or just a great evening with a friend.
Food was mediocre and service was fair at best. Very noisy. Our waiter was not attentive.
We had a wonderful dinner here with our two young daughters, ages 2 & 5. The service was phenomenal and the food was good! The chef sent us out some of the pumpkin bread pudding for dessert and it was out of this world good! We had a very pleasant experience here (:
Food and service were fantastic. Held a business dinner for 8 here and was very happy with entire experience. Food was delicious with plenty of choices for everyone. Foodie enough to feel like a special dining experience and traditional enough to be satisfied with order. We ended up going family style and loving everything we tried.
Although the name has changed the quality and service has not. This menu is friendly for all types and is a gem in Portland with tasty hand made pasta.
Food was ok but great service.
I dined alone here during my stay at the Hotel Vintage. My server, Harvey, took excellent care of me and made wonderful food and wine suggestions. After my meal a dessert menu was presented. It all looked so good but I was so full. Harvey arranged for it to be sent to my room later that night. Excellent!
The service was great but the food was just mediocre. They say they are just simple Italian food but that is not the case. They try too hard to be different and it is not successful. Too spicy, too salty and nothing normal on the menu. Too bad, I want to love it.
Server was good, they did not offer pepper for any courses. Caesar salad was great after I asked for pepper. Linguini Del Mar had several small rocks in it that I think chipped my molar. I will see when I get to my dentist. The staff comped the entree.
The food was quite good. Portions were a little small for the price, but to be expected for a hotel restaurant in downtown. The service was really excellent- we had Nathan helping us and he was delightful. He handled our large-ish (8 people) work dinner well, and happily accommodated multiple dietary restrictions. He is what elevated our experience from very good to superb!
We use il Solito frequently for business lunches. Convenient. Reasonably priced. Quiet. Excellent service. The menu is more limited than Pazzo, the previous restaurant in the same location, but the quality is very good overall. Perhaps more important, our guests are generally very positive about their experience and meal.
Very good pasta and great vegan options. Nathan was great. A repeat.
what a disappointment. we looked at a 4.5 star review without realizing it was the former Pazzo space. they never should have made the change. the server was good, has worked there for 5 years, so knows the changes. She recommended the dishes. She suggested they are family style. We were seated at a tiny (I mean really tiny) table for two and I wondered how they would present a dish and then also provide plates for sharing. We both ordered a salad and then an entre to share. The salad portions were huge and thus unappetizing. We saved more than 1/2 to take home which we left on the table.
Then the entre arrived. Veal scallopini which was breaded, tough, tasteless and cold. Yuck! Accompanied by an order of garlic bread which was basically a toasted hot dog bun with a little garlic on it (we found out that their usual bread was not available that evening) They comped us on the food and suggested this was not ordinary and the food is usually so delicious and we should try again. (they also gave us a dessert to share which really was nothing to write home about) try again? Not likely. there are too many fabulous Italian eateries in Portland to risk another meal at iL Solito.
Food quality was poor. Pasta dishes did not taste good. Prices were very high. $160 for 5 people with bad food.
The best wait staff in Portland!
Food was excellent. Each entrée looked perfect! Service was great.
The food at Il Solito was excellent, all good and a couple of exceptional dishes -- the grilled octopus, the pasta with chanterelles, the corn flan dessert. The service however, was intrusive and obnoxious. We had a waiter who interrupted our conversation numerous times to ask us whether we liked some specific ingredient and who trumpeted the origins of everything as if he were a character on "Portlandia," and a busboy who twice commented on what he overheard us saying, as if he were part of the conversation. Was it because we were three older women? Who knows? Like most groups, we had come to the restaurant to enjoy a meal together, not to chat with them.
I was meeting up with a friend for dinner. We decided on Italian, and I made a reservation here, as neither of us had been before. The decor was nice, it wasn’t uncomfortably crowded, and we were able to carry on a conversation without having to compete with too much noise. The service was wonderful, and attentive. The food was delicious. I will definitely visit again.
My son is a breakfast/lunch line cook here. My husband and I have eaten here once for our anniversary, he with a friend for lunch, we with his sister for breakfast, we with another couple for dinner. We wouldn't frequent it if it wasn't good but my son knows how to pick a good kitchen. All the times we've eaten here the food has been great - satisfying, properly portioned (not huge but good portions), inventive but not weirdly so. And the service is excellent, friendly and attentive without being intrusive. Over the course of our meals we've had breakfast sandwich (bigger than you might want, heavy carb but good), standard bacon & egg combo; Italian sandwich, Il Solito burger (said to be excellent, my kid knows how to grill), the foursome had the pasta stuffed with brisket special and the salmon ravioli, we had the spaghetti and rigatoni alla vodka. The appetizers are wonderful but the summer ones we had (burrata & tomato, prosciutto & grilled stone fruit) aren't on the menu any longer. The antipasti plate for appetizers feeds four amply with good variety. The waitress said that the menu is changing fairly frequently which we like. The foursome ate for around $37 per person with wine, shared appetizers, and coffee, before tip. So really pretty reasonable. It's a good hotel restaurant but beyond that it's a good place for locals to go as well and because it's a hotel restaurant you can get breakfast, lunch, dinner and it's open every day. We probably would have gone to it eventually as we like hotel restaurants and my husband loves Italian, but we got here sooner because of our son. We'll definitely go back. The music is a little loud but you can carry on a conversation.
We had a confirmed reservation but when my husband and the restaurant didn’t have a table for us. Instead of asking us to wait at the bar, or at the hostess stand they asked us to kindly dine at the bar as it would be the only place for us to sit. The host went on to tell us how busy they’d been over the past three days as if that would make us feel better about sitting at the bar. We were made to feel like complete burdens, as opposed to paying customers with a confirmed reservation (of which we showed up to on time)!!! My husband and I love to sit at the bar, but wanted a more “date night” experience. I would have never made a reservation if we were planning to sit at the bar. After seriously questioning why this place had so many stars, we went against our best judgment and stayed for dinner since it was almost 8pm. The food was forgettable, below par Italian food. The sausage in the rigatoni all’s vodka was so over cooked it was like leather. I still cannot believe the high ratings for this place. As someone who hardly leaves comments let alone anything negative, I felt obligated to speak up and not subject another potential customer to this restaurant. Go elsewhere!!!
Needless to say say I will not be back.
Found II Solito on Open Table when looking for a place to dine in Portland Oregon. A beautiful restaurant with amazing service. We were quickly greeted as we entered the restaurant and shown to our table right away. The host and hostess were both very nice and our waiter Cedar was fantastic.
We ordered a Caesar salad to begin our meal which was absolutely delicious! For dinner we had their T bone steak and a side of buttered noodles. Wonderful meal! Can’t wait till we go back to Portland so we can try some of their other menu items. They have a great wine selection too.
Food and service are top notch. Nice place - I’ll be back for sure. However wine list over priced. Bring your favorite bottle(s) and pay $20 cork fee.
Our server, Cedar was great. He was very knowledgeable on the menu and wine selection. Helped to make our anniversary dinner very special.
Our dinner was done very well. Had good presentation , flavor and portion is appropriate.
We ended up arriving late in to Portland and needed to feed our three kids at 10pm. Hotel Monaco recommended this Italian American spot just round the corner. They served us fast with delicious food. Super friendly made the kids laugh recommended great dishes and wine.
We went out with my sisters and we had an amazing time! Out waiters Cedar and Adam were AWESOME! We loved everything about our dinner and the entire times we spent there! Thank you so much. We will definitely be coming back!
Nelli, Liza, Margarita and Elli
The french toast was fantastic as were the mimosas and the bacon! Great options and look forward to returning!
We were there for Happy Hour on Thursday and it was not very crowded and it took almost 45 minutes for our second round of drinks to get delivered to our table. We left through the hotel lobby and the lobby bar was quite lively in comparison. We wished we would have stayed out there where we waited for the restaurant to open at 4:00.
Fresh and homemade pasta delicious options for vegan and gluten free
Very nice business dinner —- Cedar was our server and was outstanding in guiding us through a lovely and diverse, authentic multi-course meal. Stone Fruit proscuto and frito misto both very well received by our group. We will return!
Excellent food and service.
Would highly recommend
After eatin there a few times I’ve enjoyed the new restaurant @ VP. After ordering and tasting my food I actually turned around to see if Matt Sigler was in the kitchen, only because he tastes his food before it goes out, he wasn’t working, and it was obvious. I’ll make sure he’s on next time I’m dining.
Excellent meal with the best services I've seen in years. Nathan our server was excellent. Allison, the manager stopped by several time to check on us. It was really a great meal. I highly recommend.
Excellent service and food, servers and waiters were very polite and always stopped to ask if we needed anything.
Good Italian food. Would like to try more dishes. Had the chicken and pasta which had too little chicken and too much pasta. Others had the veal which was excellent.
We enjoyed dining before theater. Service was speedy, and the food was amazing! Discovering sharing here is encouraged, we shared the 22 oz steak...which we highly recommend. The salads and sides were very delicious.
Was great! We were two extra ppl and they totally took care of it.
Wonderful brunch. Everything was outstanding
Enjoyed the experience. We had two great servers. The Caesar salad is a must. Spaghetti and meatballs is also quite good. Not your traditional, but very filling.
The food and service were very mediocre. What a disappointing dinner. My daughter and I each ordered a different salad and split a pasta entree. My salad contained at least one smoked meat which was not listed on the menu. I cannot eat smoked meats and would have never ordered the salad if I had known. A second salad was substituted but it contained much too much kale and the white sardines were not that good and certainly were not worth the extra $2.00. The pasta was just so-so. The server did take our initial orders but then quickly lost interest in us. I needed another fork and spoon for the pasta nd had to take it off another table as our server was nowhere around. I felt the meal was a complete waste of time and money.
