Always a good experience.
Il Forno Trattoria has been in Santa Monica for 30 years. Still a great place to eat. Delicious Italian, great pizza, classics and new dishes. Quiet, attentive service. Practically only the mid-priced good Italian restaurant in Santa Monica.
And ample free parking.
And always reliable neighborhood Italian. Solid homemade pasta, good pizza, nice atmosphere.
He got the a customized Fettucine Il Forno and I got the standard Capellini allo Scoglio - just as yummy as the first time.
Never disappoints. Food a and service great took our 5 year granddaughter to celebrate an accomplishment and the wait staff made a fuss.
Great food. Waiter brought my husband the wrong order, but quickly corrected it. Was my birthday, and Joseph, the owner, treated us to a tiramisu and latte. Very kind, and delicious. Our favorite restaurant.
As always, we received a warm greeting by the front staff. Owner Joseph himself suggested we might want to choose a different table away from the glass on such a cold day, and then made sure we were comfortable. Two of our party of four opted for the daily special fish which came out searing hot and delicious, surrounded by a generous assortment of fresh vegetables: to-go boxes were unavoidable, the servings here are always generous. The hot freshly baked wedges of bread and the heaping bowl of irresistible chopped tomatoes and garlic are a great start to every meal here. Everyone comes by to see if you are happy, and Domenico the chef pops out of the kitchen too. If you want warmth and comfort and good solid Italian cooking, this is a neighborhood gem. We have been coming here since the second day they were open, decades ago: still the same owner, same chef, many of the same staff, same solid menu. It is casual but very professionally staffed.I hope they stay there for years to come!
Impatient waiter could barely slow down enough to take our order.
Everything was delicious! Especially loved that there wasn't a split-plate charge so we could try more dishes. Will be coming back soon. Sad we hadn't been there sooner in the 4 years we've lived in the neighborhood.
Fantastic food, hospitality, and service!
Every single person that we encountered there was incredibly nice, incredibly friendly, a lot of hand shaking and so many smiles. Truly felt like we were extended family. Food was delicious and good sized portions. Great overall experience.
Never disappointed in food or wait staff. Despite the holiday they accomadated an extra person in our party.
The flavors are superb. The service is friendly and attentive. Not noisy. Medium pricey.
Never a bad meal here.
Our beautiful daughter joined us for a wonderful lunch. Il Forno is her favorite, loves the delicious food. Salvatore always pleases the palate.
Came for Dine L.A. staff was extremely friendly. Made it feel like home.
Been going here for years, it's a fantastic neighborhood gem. Locals love it.
The dine la meal was excellent.
The food was unremarkable and the service abysmal. Despite having a reservation for 7:15, we were seated by 7:45.
The pastas were not well-timed by the kitchen and rather than al dente, they arrived soggy with nary a hint of snap. Very disappointing for an Italian restaurant where the chefs should have known better.
My Caesar tasted pre-made and stored hours before in the refrigerator.
Of course, Il Forno still has great bread. However, this was hardly enough to override a very disappointing dinner, the noise level and non-attentive service.
We remember Il Forno when it first opened as a delightful neighborhood restaurant serving good nouveau Italian. Today, the food is more like what you would expect from a cafeteria.
The food was great, the steak is amazing. The manager is very friendly. The only thing is we felt a bit rushed as the food came out too quickly one plate after another. It was a busy night and it felt like they needed to clear the tables within 2 hours to accommodate next quests, otherwise it’s a good restaurant to go to.
I have been here several times over the years and the food is consistently good, and the DineLA deal was terrific value. It's a little noisy, especially if you're seated near a large group.
Great food consistently and the portions are perfect. A great value and dishes tasted fresh and super delicious.
We love Il Forno!! Last night we hosted family members from different parts of the country, one of whom was celebrating a major birthday. The food and service as always was fabulous. Michael, our server, is a gem! Being seated in the quieter "Willy's Room" was a plus for the demographics of this particular group (while the bigger room near the open kitchen side is our go-to when we have the grandkids with us or a big noisy group). We asked on our Open Table reservation for the birthday to be acknowledged at dessert time and a yummy slice hazelnut cake with a candle magically appeared without having to ask again. Another birthday was celebrated at another table shortly thereafter, reinforcing our thought that Il Forno is the perfect place for any occasion.
We made reservation at 19:45. And we arrived 5 minuets an advance. We waited 20 minutes hostess but nobody came to us. Restaurant was full.
Lovely neighborhood restaurant that accepts way too many reservations on Saturday night. It is jammed, uncomfortable, uncomfortably noisy! Never again on a weekend.
My birthday celebration on the evening of January 20 was splendid. The food was delicious, the service excellent and all our 8 guests had a wonderful time! We usually prefer to dine on the patio, but it was chilly outside and the wind was blustery, so we enjoyed eating in the dining room. We love taking our German Shepherd Hannah to dine with us and she is very happy to lie peacefully next to us as we enjoy our food and wine. We'll see you again very soon!
Finally a place in LA that is not overly pretentious. Great friendly service and really delicious food. It felt like a place locals would go back to over and over. Will definitely be adding it to our list of regular spots, worth going a little out of our way for.
Consistently good!!! Have been coming here for years and it never disappoints!
Been coming here for 30 years. It’s a great delicious neighborhood spot.
Great pasta dishes and salads! Service was top notch. Loved the basket of bread!
Enjoy the dineLA menu. Great variety of choices, excellent quality and ample portions. The cold seafood salad was especially good as an appetizer
We love Il Forno ... great food and great staff. We come about once a week and this time was for dineLA... really delish.
I love this restaurant and the people who work there!
The food was really nice, the service was prompt, and sitting outside allowed us to soak in the sunshine.
The staff was incredible and attentive to our needs! Made me feel special on my birthday!
Noise gives me indigestion. Yet Il Forno's outdoor tables are the perfect antidote. On a mild winter evening (hey, it's California), it's a nearly idyllic place to be (though on a Saturday night, you're likely to be surrounded by everyone who's waiting for a table; hint: go early or late).
The food is... good. Nothing particularly special but tasty. The seafood salad (frutta di mare) was piquant (love that word) with just the right (ready?) zing. But the pizza with prosciutto cried out for better knife work in prep. There's nothing that makes you feel more ridiculous than having a long slice of prosciutto refuse to come apart when you bite it, forcing you to grab it with your fingers to restrain it. This assumes you eat pizza like a New Yorker by folding it in half. If you eat it with a knife and fork (shame on you), this won't be a problem. But it wouldn't have been a problem if the prep chef had cut the ham into smaller bits. I'm there to eat food, not fight with it.
The tarte tatin had an ideal of balance of sweet and tart, though how a French dessert made it into an Italian restaurant that should serve torta di mele is a mystery.
Il Forno is a reliable neighborhood trattoria that's worth a try.
Il Forno is one of our favorite restaurants. We like it because the food is consistently good. One of us had the monkfish which was incredibly flavorful. The other ordered cioppino, which I didn't think was as good as the similar "bollito" I had ordered a year ago or so.
The service is good; the waiters are attentive but not constantly hovering.
Sorry for any misspellings in Italian!
The best. We have gone to Il Forno for 25 years and are always welcomed like family. The food choice is wonderful and the long time standards are always amazing, no matter how many times we order them.
Always our favorite restaurant - great fresh food, love the service, good wine list
