The food was unremarkable and the service abysmal. Despite having a reservation for 7:15, we were seated by 7:45.
The pastas were not well-timed by the kitchen and rather than al dente, they arrived soggy with nary a hint of snap. Very disappointing for an Italian restaurant where the chefs should have known better.
My Caesar tasted pre-made and stored hours before in the refrigerator.
Of course, Il Forno still has great bread. However, this was hardly enough to override a very disappointing dinner, the noise level and non-attentive service.
We remember Il Forno when it first opened as a delightful neighborhood restaurant serving good nouveau Italian. Today, the food is more like what you would expect from a cafeteria.
The food was great, the steak is amazing. The manager is very friendly. The only thing is we felt a bit rushed as the food came out too quickly one plate after another. It was a busy night and it felt like they needed to clear the tables within 2 hours to accommodate next quests, otherwise it’s a good restaurant to go to.
We love Il Forno!! Last night we hosted family members from different parts of the country, one of whom was celebrating a major birthday. The food and service as always was fabulous. Michael, our server, is a gem! Being seated in the quieter "Willy's Room" was a plus for the demographics of this particular group (while the bigger room near the open kitchen side is our go-to when we have the grandkids with us or a big noisy group). We asked on our Open Table reservation for the birthday to be acknowledged at dessert time and a yummy slice hazelnut cake with a candle magically appeared without having to ask again. Another birthday was celebrated at another table shortly thereafter, reinforcing our thought that Il Forno is the perfect place for any occasion.
My birthday celebration on the evening of January 20 was splendid. The food was delicious, the service excellent and all our 8 guests had a wonderful time! We usually prefer to dine on the patio, but it was chilly outside and the wind was blustery, so we enjoyed eating in the dining room. We love taking our German Shepherd Hannah to dine with us and she is very happy to lie peacefully next to us as we enjoy our food and wine. We'll see you again very soon!
Finally a place in LA that is not overly pretentious. Great friendly service and really delicious food. It felt like a place locals would go back to over and over. Will definitely be adding it to our list of regular spots, worth going a little out of our way for.
Noise gives me indigestion. Yet Il Forno's outdoor tables are the perfect antidote. On a mild winter evening (hey, it's California), it's a nearly idyllic place to be (though on a Saturday night, you're likely to be surrounded by everyone who's waiting for a table; hint: go early or late).
The food is... good. Nothing particularly special but tasty. The seafood salad (frutta di mare) was piquant (love that word) with just the right (ready?) zing. But the pizza with prosciutto cried out for better knife work in prep. There's nothing that makes you feel more ridiculous than having a long slice of prosciutto refuse to come apart when you bite it, forcing you to grab it with your fingers to restrain it. This assumes you eat pizza like a New Yorker by folding it in half. If you eat it with a knife and fork (shame on you), this won't be a problem. But it wouldn't have been a problem if the prep chef had cut the ham into smaller bits. I'm there to eat food, not fight with it.
The tarte tatin had an ideal of balance of sweet and tart, though how a French dessert made it into an Italian restaurant that should serve torta di mele is a mystery.
Il Forno is a reliable neighborhood trattoria that's worth a try.
Il Forno is one of our favorite restaurants. We like it because the food is consistently good. One of us had the monkfish which was incredibly flavorful. The other ordered cioppino, which I didn't think was as good as the similar "bollito" I had ordered a year ago or so.
The service is good; the waiters are attentive but not constantly hovering.

Came to celebrate the holidays and seeing family from outta town. Service was gracious and not rushed, even when most of my party was running late. They brought out a complimentary birthday dessert at the end. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed their food, portions were generous.
Enjoyed spending New Years Eve for dinner at Il Forno. Delicious sea bass dinner, and my husband, New York steak, perfectly prepared, and personally served by the chef. Outdoor door dining was made available by enclosing a special area, very romantic and comfortable. We regularly lunch at Il Forno, service and food consistently great. Looking forward to next visit, soon.
This is an amazing place. We had a family gathering, nine of us, on a busy Christmas Eve, with two small kids. Although the restaurant was very busy, we never wanted for service. They really know how to treat their guests.
We shared four different appetizers consisting of various cold cuts, cheeses and some with seafood delights sundried tomatoes, yellow beets, chianti poached pears, shrimp, scallops. Healthy and tasty.
We picked several salads to share. The three & five-year-old grandkids ended up loving a spinach salad with chianti poached pears, roasted hazelnuts & goat cheese in lemon ginger dressing.
The pastas, main courses - lamb, fish, lobster, scallops and vegetarian - all great. My daughter picked an unforgettable pizza that had a chicken egg, tomato sauce, wild mushrooms & crispy prosciutto.
They have good selection of Italian and California wines.
The owners were there greeting guests and watching over everthing.
