Il Fornaio - Walnut Creek Ratings and Reviews
Stupid. Uniquely stupid. The Passporto online rewards program is absurd and juvenile.
How many times have you been dining and looked over to see teenagers, pre-teens, and even pre-K kids playing with electronic devices during a meal and thought …. why?
Il Fornaio now requires grown adults to use their devices - log in, input password, retrieve password, get new password, type in new password to change password to get to Passporto, to earn points. YUCK ! ENOUGH !!!
Stupid, juvenile, insulting.
The old paper-based Passporto rewards was clever and engaging.
The new online app-based is VERY frustrating!
Great food. Wonderful servers. Fab atmosphere.
Dumb dumb DUMB online rewards program. GET RID OF IT !!
Ordered the salmon cooked through and instead they brought me literally charred salmon . The cook tried to hide it by putting the totally charred side down. I didn’t notice and took a bite; I almost choked it was that bad. To top it off took forever to get my check. You would have thought after they profusely apologized that they would have at the very least taken off my soup. Nope, and I waited a good 15-20 mins for my salmon the second time; and it was a somewhat slow night. This place has gone downhill. I almost went to True Food and wished I would have as their salmon is always good and cooked to perfection!
Disappointed in the food for the price. Pasta for one of us was overdone. They admitted they had placed it under a food lamp because they brought it before we finished our salads. The other pasta dish was undercooked. Service was uneven. Could not understand the server. The signature cocktails were interesting and rather pleasant.
We always enjoy Il Fornaio. We went for the special on the chosen region of Italy for the month of January. The food was good and the service was great, but we missed the sampler menu that let's you order 3 courses for a fixed price. We have always looked forward to that and they have discontinued it this year.
First impressions are crucial to any restaurant, and as my first time dining at this establishment, I would say this made a fantastic impression: lovely and welcoming atmosphere, helpful staff, and, most of all, amazing food. I would definitely dine here again.
The pasta I've had is just not very good. One time, they didn't salt the pasta cooking water. Another time, there were thick slices of almost raw garlic in my pasta. Last night, I got a pile of pasta with almost no smoked salmon. The bread is good, service okay. I just don't get "the product" from this very attractive restaurant.
We have eaten here a number of times over the years......and since I am a picky italian chef myself (meaning I generally look for quality/authenticity) I always find it satisfactory and very good. Despite being a chain they do such a good job at almost everything. Last night new years eve disappointed with paired down menu which they had not done in previous years so unable to order our favorite items (the cold antipasto plate for sure which is fabulous). We had the fried calamari: 1) Frying oil not hot enough so did not crisp got oily & tuff cause had to fry it longer; squid was so fresh/sweet should have flash fried (only 20-30 secs) to insure tender .they missed the mark. Dish was still good cause so fresh/tasty and spicy marinara to die for.
We split the house salad as usual nothing special just greens....should add some color slivered carrots/shaved red onion/cherry tomato/etc. Sweet lettuces were fresh covered with large shards of grana we got a side of the super tangy delish thick emulsified vinegary evoo dressing to overdress the salad big time.....it was killer. Our waiter (embarrassed I did not ask his name) was fantastic treated us like family....split the salad so we each had a nice portion. Don't get me wrong....the salad is simple and nothing to write home about......but just what the doctor ordered.....fresh/bright/healthy.
The tagliatelle bolognese was world class comfort food as always split for us w/out asking. If we don't order it for dinner we order to take home. The sauce is amazing, depth of flavor, complexity, then blended with super chewy thick under cooked noodles......exactly how every Italian likes and demands it. It is a testimonial to the sophistication of their customers and the authenticity of the food that they never americanize their pasta by cooking the noodles soft to suit the taste of most americans.
Overall very enjoyable meal, good value, great service.....and a nice upscale feeling for getting dressed up on new years
We went with another couple for New Year's Eve. We were seated right away, and the bus boy brought bread and olive oil. But the waiter took so long to greet us that we were asking everyone who came by for our waiter. Once he greeted us, service was fine. We had brought a bottle of wine and he did a nice job on the uncorking. The cork was a mess and he got us a decanter and a filter so we did not get cork in our wine.
The food was not as good as we remembered it from our last visit. This may have been the choice of entrees, one from the special menu and 3 from the regular menu. The desserts were outstanding.
Other than the hick up of the waiter not greeting us, our evening was fun and we enjoyed our meal.
We made our reservation for New Years Eve dinner in advance and when we got there, the friendly staff took us right away and got seated comfortably. Seconds after got seated... the bus boy already started pouring water into our drinking glasses and while he was doing that... the main waiter/server came up and asking if we wanted to start with some cocktails... and YES SIREE. Anyway, our experience with Il Fornaio was absolutely awesome!!! I will recommend this place and we are going back very soon! The steak and the dessert that I ordered was PHENOMENAL! OMG!!! KUDOS TO THEIR CHEF!
We go to Il Fornaio because of the setting. Too many restaurants are much too casual for us, and Il Fornaio has white tablecloths, napkins, and is nicely decorated. The food, unfortunately, is not very good. My salad looked tired, the spinach was boiled, and was not finished well. The potatoes did not taste fresh. My fish was okay, but over-salted. My husbands pasta was mediocre.
I checked in with my name and the hostess corrected my pronunciation. I told her I was fairly certain I knew my own name. We ordered mimosas, the waitress spilled my friend's and proceeded to wipe her fingers on the tablecloth. I asked what she recommended between 2 dishes and she told me the gnocchi. The gnocchi came undercooked, with runny sauce, and horrible flavor. When asked, I stated my dish was horrible. I didnt even eat it. She shrugged. I asked to speak to chef. No accommodation. I asked to speak to manager who finally came 45 min later with a free dessert coupon on my next visit with an entree purchaese and an apology as he understood that it looked undercooked and watery. He even admitted that they don't usually recommend that dish, and I pointed out the waitress steered me to that one. I don't write reviews often but this experience, service, and food was so awful I feel compelled to warn others. Very disappointed, and still hungry given I didnt eat and was never provided a replacement nor was it taken off bill. Stay away.
I love all the Il Fornaio Restaurants, but the hostess at the Walnut Creek location really ruined the meal. She insulted my guest and didn’t check me in properly so I had to contact Open Table directly to straighten out the points. Overall, very poor experience at one of my favorite places. Sad.
Il Fornaio is the only chain restaurant I enjoy going to. I have gone in different cities and I always enjoy the ambiance, service and wine selection. As downtown Walnut Creek evolves and grows I appreciate always having a place to go where I will have good food and a great time.
This is always a great place to celebrate a birthday like we did. Food was wonderful. Our party had several plates “split” so we could taste a bit of everything. Our server was attentive and offered us extra bread along with the delicious olive oil. The ambiance was festive and decorated for the holidays.
I requested a table in front of fireplace as we had in 12/16 for our Christmas dinner. We were seated in another room because "there was a special private group and there was not enough staff to handle our group of 8 in addition". Our waitress was extremely busy, took a long time to fill drink orders. Food was okay, coffee was cold. Obviously there were not enough waiters to handle the busy restaurant. Disappointing. Probably find another place to go next time.
The atmosphere at the restaurant is lovely at the holidays, and the service was personal and helpful. But the food was really just not good. One or two of the appetizers were fine, and one person enjoyed their seafood (non pasta) entree. But the seafood in the pasta was terrible. And two of our pasta dishes were the most overcooked pasta I have ever been served -a complete pile of mush.
This was probably THE WORST meal I have had at a restaurant in years. The food (there were 8 of us) was bland and just plain awful. Everyone agreed that it was a miserable meal. I did the tasting menu (as did 5 of us) and there was not one thing that was tasty about it. On the testing menu they even had an item that we tried to order and was told that wasn't really part of the tasting menu??? It was listed with the other three entrees. DON'T put it on there if it isn't part of the menu!
Needless to say - we won't return. SO DISAPPOINTING.
