Il Fornaio - San Jose Ratings and Reviews
The food was good to excellent however the service rather spotty.
The bar tenders were excellent offering wine tastings and commentary while the floor server was terrible in terms of finesse and attention to details. Poor service as the fault of even poorer management . I would not recommend Il Fornaio if you are looking for a Four Star dining experience, be prepared for inattentive and poorly trained servers.
We came for lunch on Sunday and enjoyed a nicely paced delicious meal. We started with a house salad and the wonderful bread and then some bruschetta on flat bread. My husband & I shared the veal scallopini which was delicious. Our companion really enjoyed the Pennoni alla vodka. Our seat in the window afforded a great view of the goings on downtown. We always enjoy our meals here and will be back.
Service was very good. We were seated right away. Ambience also nice. Wine and drinks were good but entrées were disappointing; e.g. lentil soup, beef filet undercooked, peppercorn sauce too sweet. Dessert menu was minimal. There are better places for lower price. More impressed with the food at other Il Fornaio locations.
Il Fornaio in downtown San Jose never disappoints. The service is always great and the food always exceeds expectations. In addition, there is 2 hours of parking validated if you park across the street at the convention center parking lot. I would visit this place again.
My wife and I dine at Il Fornaio during the monthly Festa Regionales. Custom menus are created for the first 2-3 weeks a month that highlight the unique fare of a region in Italy. February 2018 region focused was Umbria. With the Il Fornaio phone app, you can have your Passaporto stamped during the months with a chance to win a trip for two to Italy. Also, you will earn reward points for future discounted menu items. On this particular visit we redeemed reward points that reduced our bill from $103 to $22. Sweet.
This is authentic Italian cuisine and the pace is not rushed. It is a very comfortable dining here. During our trip to Italy last summer we sampled all the Tiramisu from north to south. Without a doubt, the finest Tiramisu is right here at Il Fornaio San Jose. We're sure you will also enjoy the professional staff from the receptionists Rosemary and Debbie to our favorite waiters John and Armando and the manager Andy Rowe. Andy does run a 'good ship'.
I made a reservation for me and a group of my friends to eat here before our schools winter ball and it was a fantastic experience. Delicious food, a private room for our party, and friendly staff that helped us get that perfect picture were some of the highlights. Would absolutely do it again next year!
I didn’t think the Seabass special was very good. The fish was dry, the topping was strange, & it didn’t have enough sauce.
The service was not great. The server didn’t come back until half way through the meal to offer to top off the pasta dish with cheese & my husband’s wine glass sat empty for most of the meal.
The food just wasn’t that great overall but the environment was nice.
My 2nd time eating at Il Fornaio San Jose (have also eaten at their Palo Alto location a few times a few years ago, but never in their Santa Clara restaurant). Food was very good. I had the smoked salmon salad and the seafood risotto but didn't have dessert. Portions were normal, not generous but not tiny. Service was good. Beer selection was limited as they'd run out of some beers. I'd definitely go back.
I don't think this location offers patio/outside dining because it's inside the Westin San Jose hotel (formerly the Saint Claire Hotel).
Very nice place. I had a group of 4 for lunch. The waiter was very friendly and accommodating, but it took a while for him to check up after the food was delivered so we had to wait a while for add'l items like red pepper. I ordered the roast beef and it was the pre-processed kind you get in an airport pre-made sandwich. My colleagues that ordered the Pasta & Risotto looked much better and home made, I should have known to stick with the Italian food at an Italian restaurant...
Great that calories are listed on menu. The assorted fish appetizer was noteworthy. Shrimp, scallop, tuna and octopus, each with an excellent sauce. The zambione desert was tasty. For the main course I had the penne alla vodka, very tasty and low calorie. My wife didn’t see it on the menu but requested pasta with vegetables. It came with lots of vegetables and a tasty tomato sauce. Such flexibility in the kitchen is appreciated.
This is a review that I hate to have to write. Il Fornaio has been our reliable "go to" restaurant for my wife and I for over 20 years. [articularly for late night (10 PMish) dining after a symphony, etc. We knew we could always get a very well prepared meal with good service in a nice atmosphere. It was a great way to complete our evening.
Lately, there seems to be some slipping in the quality of the restaurant. Dinners have been progressively less and less satisfactory. It culminated last Saturday night in a truly bad experience.
We arrived 15 minutes early for our reservation and were promptly seated. That ends the good part. It took forever to get service, then when we finally got to speak to our server we were rushed to order our drinks. A few minutes later he comes back and takes our order (simple carpaccio appetizer and two pastas). The carpaccio was great as always, and we easily got in two bites each before our main courses hit with the explanation that the kitchen was closing so they were rushing out the food. Apparently, they were too rushed to even stir the clump of red pepper flakes throughout my sauce. And my wife's dish was so bad that she stopped eating saying that though she was starved, it wasn't worth the calories.
And we noticed they were still sitting tables as our food arrived. So, the kitchen closing doesn't even seem like a credible excuse, though no restaurant should ever have to use it anyway.
Then our wine finally arrived after we'd eaten half our main courses. We could have stopped our server and asked, but he stayed well away from our part of the restaurant.
It's an awful way to end a 20 year relationship with a restaurant, but they've slipped so badly that I wouldn't spend our money there, nor recommend it to anyone else. I guess it's off to Original Joe's after the symphony now.
Excellent service by Sean—clearly an experienced server. Thoughtful by anticipating our needs, did not bock or throw attitude when I made a few Whole30 requests. Excellent food and my guest reported her cocktail was well crafted. We were in the hood for a concert at City National Center across the street.
