Very bad experience. I checked in at front door, but they marked us as no show. When i arrive at my seats, the chair is not clean, and took me 10 mins wait the serven to clean that up. Food was soso, and expensive.

Even though this is a chain, the San Jose Il Fornaio didn't feel like one. The location in the Westin St. Claire is perfect and the food and service were great. They are open all day, so you can go for a late lunch or early dinner.

Been to several Il Fornaio locations. It was a nice meal. Calamari very tasty. Pasta dishes ok, not exceptional, and overpriced - particularly plain pasta pomodoro. Two people has short ribs. Felt they were very rich but tasty.

We had a concert at the City National Civic, so we took in dinner beforehand. It was so good as always, our waiter Brian was great, and so convenient .

The food was outstanding. The server so-so. The server was slow and often seen waiting on other people but walked right past us several times without asking us if we wanted a refill on drinks or anything else. I guess he thought we weren't going to spend a lot of $$$ even though our dinner was $95.00 +. He did not deserve even a 15% tip based on how attentive he was and or how he made us feel ( unwelcomed and did not smile, make pleasant eye contact and conversation ) which we feel would have given him a 20% or more.

Excellent service by Sean—clearly an experienced server. Thoughtful by anticipating our needs, did not bock or throw attitude when I made a few Whole30 requests. Excellent food and my guest reported her cocktail was well crafted. We were in the hood for a concert at City National Center across the street.

Welcoming, friendly and helpful staff for a birthday celebration. Superb Bloody Marys. Varied menu. First-rate cuisine (we had beet salad, salmon with spinach and roasted potatoes, combination dessert). We are both disabled and found Il Fornaio to have excellent access and a very accommodating staff. We very much appreciated the valet parking, too. After lunch, we vowed to return soon. Thanks for a very memorable experience!

food was ok, salads were soggy and dressings had no flavor (on more than one occasion). server was more intent on serving a large group (probably thinking tips would be better) and almost totally ignored us . on another occasion we sat at the bar and ate there --bartenders were terrific

The seating was prompt. The service polite, friendly and attentive. The food was hot, tasty and
was served in a short time after ordering. The pricing is reasonable for a down town restaurant.

I will recommend this restaurant to my friends and business associates.

Unfortunately, the restaurant menu was different than the menu shown on their website. We did get what we wanted but it was confusing. The waiter was very accommodating. They should verify that the menus are the same. We were ready to walk out.

We were given the wrong menu when we were seated, After unknowingly ordering from the Lunch menus we were given we were gradually told-"we dont have that." only after being given the correct Dinner menu did we realize, The order was all messed up, At one point, we were told we'd be getting an extra order "on the house" only to not get that. Service was slow and the waiter volunteered the bus boy and he were feuding; that showed in the poor service. The food was just ok-pasta better than the fish. Nice atmosphere but poor service, over priced food and a shame they have walked away from their regional Italian themes. Attractive environment but wont be returning to eat.

We always love coming to Il Fornaio. The service is always wonderful and reliable and they treat us like family. Nick always stops by to say hello. We really enjoyed the venison off their special's menu, and my wife loved her salmon dish. Nick bought us the strudel dessert as a nice treat. It was amazing!

Dreadful - the worst Italian food that I have ever had. This place is so old and tired. Time to close it down and open up something new, current and fresh. Don’t make the mistake of going here when there are so many other great options around.

The dining room is warm and welcoming with that touch of elegance that makes your event feel special. The serving staff was terrific - attentive and polite and their good team work showed. The bread basket is amazing, save room for the bread as it is quite a speciality here. The oreccheti chicken pasta dish was fine, could have used more seasoning for me. Similarly, the short ribs were nicely done and very tender, but could have used more garlic and other seasoning. Serving sizes seemed quite generous. One less than stellar aspect is that the restrooms are a long way away, down stairs and around several corners.

Nice restaurant, delicious food but our party of 3 was one of the first, if not the first, seated at tables when you opened but we didn’t get served for a long time while others who came much later were already eating. We got no real explanation why our food came so late. If it wasn’t for this irritating factor I would have given you a better rating.

Party of 5 for Christmas get-together on Dec. 26th 2017. Started off great with friendly waiter and fresh hot bread. Downhill from there..... I had the sea bass, which was brought cold and overcooked. I sent it back and had to wait till all others had finished their meal to see mine returned...hot now but still overcooked, and no flavor except the gummy sauce it was smothered in. My wife's lasagna was burned. My son's lobster with pasta was bland with over-cooked linguine. No problem with other 2 other dishes; a filet of beef and chicken. 2 out of 5....not good. Waiter was slow, uncaring and never came back to ask us "how our meal was"....all this mediocrity at high prices....great combo. I'll never return to San Jose Il Fornaio. The one in Roseville is much better.

We booked for Xmas dinner as we do every year. Arrived to find only buffet available. $500 for 5 adults and a five year old was excessive compared to what was served. I think as the customer I should have been notified that it was buffet only and we would have passed on the reservation. I am not a satisfied customer.

Unbelievable experience on Christmas day. I normally cook but decided this year I would not and instead take everyone out. Had a 3:30 reservation for 8. A few in our group were a little late but everyone arrived well before 4PM. When we were first seated the hostess told us it was buffet only today and the price was $49.50/person. We had 2-12 year olds with us who only ate off the kids section and some deserts. I had to fight to get them the kids price. When the bill came they charged us $75/adult. They proceeded to tell me that was the dinner price. $49.50 was the lunch price that ended at 4PM. Again had to fight to get the bill reduced to the price we were told when we sat down. In the end, the waiter did take care of the bill and the food was good. However next year, I'm cooking.

We were unaware that our meal was going to be a buffet, not what we expected for Christmas. This is the first time we had ever eaten out on Christmas, and probably our last. The food was mediocre, cooler than warm. I wish in the advertisement they would have said Buffet, it would have eliminated us from going there.

My bad, booked table on Christmas day for lunch and didn't realize it was a brunch; could not order or favorites from the menu.

Service was pretty lame. Would disappear for a long time. Food was "average" compared to ordering off the menu and getting hot, fresh out of the kitchen food vs semi congealed sitting in a big hotel pan over a warmer.

Desserts we're good though.

$50 per head. We never eat "buffet volume", so didn't really see the value given we couldn't order what we know we like.

Also, bad marks for Opentable. Or confirmed table was not in Il Fornaio's system so we got a table out of the way much later than we had booked.

All in all a bad experience, but I'll fall on my sword for not realizing it was a brunch.

Quite a disappointment on Xmas Eve. An off night or an indicator of where it's headed?
We should have known things would go awry when I greeted our server by thanking him for working on Xmas Eve and he replied, 'well someone has to do it'. The kitchen was already out of several entree items by our 6:30 reservations. The Trenette seafood pasta was rather bland. Whereas the featured chicken dish was way too spicy. Surprising, as both were Best of the Festa items. Tasty fennel salads. My Branzino fish was quite good. Having given our waiter (Chistoph) about 1/3 of a bottle of the remaining Pinot (which he eagerly accepted), plus them being out of several of our desired items, I would have expected at least a partial break in the corkage, but not. After all, I did all my own pouring and on previous visits have seen full waiver.
We are longtime fans of I.F. We have come for birthdays, T-Day, Xmas and more over 18+ years and eaten at 5 different locations. By far this was our most disappointing I.F. experience. Bad enough we'll start doing special occasions elsewhere.

On the ground floor of the classic Saint Claire Hotel (now a Westin) in the heart of San Jose, CA, Il Fornaio provides an altogether pleasant dining experience with the emphasis on classic meat and seafood offerings. We went there after an opera matinee. Had a great time. Very approachable and accommodating staff. Good, not great, food. Small but well-curated wine list. Would go back IF I were in the area for something else.

We like the setting and location in this amazing Ste Claire Hotel. The food is good, the service is attentive and friendly, but the prices seem to have increased to a point where the food should be at least very good. Wine prices have also shot up at least $10 in the last decade, which I'm not sure is justified. The regional menu is now $10 more than a decade ago and now excludes dessert, which I think used to be included. Service has lost some charm in that each table has a pepper mill so the servers no longer ask to add fresh pepper. I also did not see any servers offering more grated cheese. Some of the charming more personal touches seem to have been phased out.

I can't possibly give an in depth review because I got to my reservation late due to grid lock traffic conditions in San Jose. I had about an half hour to wolf down my food before we attended an event at the San Jose Opera. While it was impossible for me to fully enjoy the dinning experience here, I can say the staff was fully attentive to our compressed schedule. Food was delivered promptly along with the bill. The lasagna was a good go to and tasty. If you are coming from out of town to enjoy this restaurant I would recommend to see what events are going on in San Jose ahead of time in order to prepare driving time and finding a place to park which was virtually impossible for us. If you're staying at the Westin, you'll have no problems.
