This is a review that I hate to have to write. Il Fornaio has been our reliable "go to" restaurant for my wife and I for over 20 years. [articularly for late night (10 PMish) dining after a symphony, etc. We knew we could always get a very well prepared meal with good service in a nice atmosphere. It was a great way to complete our evening.
Lately, there seems to be some slipping in the quality of the restaurant. Dinners have been progressively less and less satisfactory. It culminated last Saturday night in a truly bad experience.
We arrived 15 minutes early for our reservation and were promptly seated. That ends the good part. It took forever to get service, then when we finally got to speak to our server we were rushed to order our drinks. A few minutes later he comes back and takes our order (simple carpaccio appetizer and two pastas). The carpaccio was great as always, and we easily got in two bites each before our main courses hit with the explanation that the kitchen was closing so they were rushing out the food. Apparently, they were too rushed to even stir the clump of red pepper flakes throughout my sauce. And my wife's dish was so bad that she stopped eating saying that though she was starved, it wasn't worth the calories.
And we noticed they were still sitting tables as our food arrived. So, the kitchen closing doesn't even seem like a credible excuse, though no restaurant should ever have to use it anyway.
Then our wine finally arrived after we'd eaten half our main courses. We could have stopped our server and asked, but he stayed well away from our part of the restaurant.
It's an awful way to end a 20 year relationship with a restaurant, but they've slipped so badly that I wouldn't spend our money there, nor recommend it to anyone else. I guess it's off to Original Joe's after the symphony now.
For an Italian restaurant .. I would have expected the pasta to be a lot better. Pasta tasted average like you would fine at a casual dining restaurant that serves pasta . Price was a little high for the quality of food we got...
Very bad experience. I checked in at front door, but they marked us as no show. When i arrive at my seats, the chair is not clean, and took me 10 mins wait the serven to clean that up. Food was soso, and expensive.
Even though this is a chain, the San Jose Il Fornaio didn't feel like one. The location in the Westin St. Claire is perfect and the food and service were great. They are open all day, so you can go for a late lunch or early dinner.
Been to several Il Fornaio locations. It was a nice meal. Calamari very tasty. Pasta dishes ok, not exceptional, and overpriced - particularly plain pasta pomodoro. Two people has short ribs. Felt they were very rich but tasty.
We had a concert at the City National Civic, so we took in dinner beforehand. It was so good as always, our waiter Brian was great, and so convenient .
The food was outstanding. The server so-so. The server was slow and often seen waiting on other people but walked right past us several times without asking us if we wanted a refill on drinks or anything else. I guess he thought we weren't going to spend a lot of $$ even though our dinner was $95.00 +. He did not deserve even a 15% tip based on how attentive he was and or how he made us feel ( unwelcomed and did not smile, make pleasant eye contact and conversation ) which we feel would have given him a 20% or more.
Excellent service by Sean—clearly an experienced server. Thoughtful by anticipating our needs, did not bock or throw attitude when I made a few Whole30 requests. Excellent food and my guest reported her cocktail was well crafted. We were in the hood for a concert at City National Center across the street.
Welcoming, friendly and helpful staff for a birthday celebration. Superb Bloody Marys. Varied menu. First-rate cuisine (we had beet salad, salmon with spinach and roasted potatoes, combination dessert). We are both disabled and found Il Fornaio to have excellent access and a very accommodating staff. We very much appreciated the valet parking, too. After lunch, we vowed to return soon. Thanks for a very memorable experience!
food was ok, salads were soggy and dressings had no flavor (on more than one occasion). server was more intent on serving a large group (probably thinking tips would be better) and almost totally ignored us . on another occasion we sat at the bar and ate there --bartenders were terrific
