Il Fornaio - San Jose Ratings and Reviews
Came here for our one year anniversary. Only the woman at the check in said anything to us about it. Olathe first waiter said he would be back and never came. Another waiter came and didn’t set the table as we ordered drinks. Her drink was fine but my “bubbly” champagne was flat and tasted like resealed wine and cork. Took off without me finishing my order for an appetizer. The Bruschetta was good but nothing special. Tomatoes on heavily toasted almost burnt bread. My girlfriend ordered the chicken dinner and it was dry, came with a huge portion of boiled spinach, and russet potatoes that were a mix of hard and undercooked. I ordered the seafood linguine plate and while it was pretty good the amount of tomatoe sauce was appalling and had the flavor and texture of a canned sauce base. I came here once a few years ago and it was much better. I don’t think we will be returning.
Il Fornaio is a favorite for our families celebrations. Reservation was perfect, seated immediately. Waiter was friendly but slow to take our order, slower to deliver our order and almost non-existent for dessert which it was already more than 2 hours after arrival we passed on dessert. Waited for drinks as well. Had to hunt him down to get check. Had the same waiter a few month ago and he was slow that time too.
Food was OK, but service was awful. First, they never brought appetizer for one of us. Completely forgot. Second, they brought main course, but did not remove dirty plates after appetizer. All dirty plates and silverware were left on the table until they brought a check.
Juan, our waiter, was delightful and very accommodating once we told him that we had theater tickets. The food was delicious. I had the salmon and my husband had the veal. We both had the squash soup. Both meals were excellent. The service was excellent. Plan to return again.
Although Il Fornaio maintains a very pleasant ambience and a high level of service, I was disappointed in the quality of the food. I ordered a Caesar salad which had a dressing with a substandard oil that made it very heavy and the lettuce stuck together in a dense mound, and the Parmesan was short on flavor. My veal with artichoke was OK, but the accompanying potatoes were much too oily. The vegetables were cooked properly but arrived cold. For the prices, I expect better quality control for ingredients like olive oil and Parmesan, and someone needs to monitor the chef’s use of oil.
Had a reservation but waited 15-20 minutes for our table. Service was slow, nonexistent at times, water not refilled, and not in keeping with previous experiences at Il Fornaio. Part of our order was forgotten and when brought, was incorrect. Made for an embarrassing evening as the host. If not for the quality of the food and experiences at other Il Fornaio restaurants, would not return.
Food was excellent as always. It’s our fifth year going for Thanksgiving. 4pm Rez, party of 3. Service has always been excellent, even with full house. This year was the first one with slow service. We felt forgotten a couple of times. And the restaurant was never full. Still, a great time with beloved family.
We had made a reservation however we were seated out of the regular dining area at a round table next to the kitchen. The service was very poor, we were in the forgotten corner, water glasses were not even refilled. The food was mediocre, except for my sons pizza which he said was good. At the end of the meal the check was never presented, I even stood up and no one came. Overall poor experience. We have dined there in the past and it had been much better.
Had a great dinner with my Grand-daughter. I requested a table at the window and was seated immediately upon arrival. The service was great and quick, the meal and drinks were tasty.
The manager came by to check if everything was ok. We even bought a loaf of Olive bread to take home. We definitely will visit again.
Reserved a table for after opera on a Sunday.
Could not get in the door to get a pre-dinner drink so went down the street to another venue.
The crowd had cleared by our 6:15 reservation. We had a pleasant table by the window.
Our (young) waiter was somewhat inexperienced; he couldn't recommend anything on the wine list as he was just 20 yrs. old. Since the menu was featuring wines and food from Piemonte, it would be helpful for the waitstaff to have some idea of the regional wines featured and what foods would pair well with them.
My guest and I ordered two appetizers and shared a pasta dish.
The portobello mushroom appetizer was very good; it came with a sauce and some cherry tomatoes. Very nice.
The soup ordered was very bland and also not attractive in the bowl. I should have sent it back but didn't want to make a fuss. Would not order it again.
The pasta with peas and speck with cream sauce was generous enough for two people.
Freshness of the pasta was complimented by the sauce. Simple but satisfying Sunday fare.
The Barolo ordered was fine with the pasta.
The waiter brought us a complimentary dessert of coffee/chocolate ice cream, for no particular reason.
Love Il Fornaio, but have had mixed results at this particular location. I return annually when in town for conferences. Sometimes I can’t get a table, even for a quick bite, the receptionist says they are completely booked, although the restaurant is mostly empty and it seems to me they could probably accommodate the request. The bar is very small, and gets very crowded. The servers are sometimes not attentive and on this particular occasion they ignored my guest’s special request to prepare her filet with no sauce, due to food allergies. The dish came swimming in sauce and when it later came to the servers attention, he did nothing to make it right, other than blame someone else. I think he should have discounted her meal voluntarily. The food is pretty good, I like the bread, the Caesar salad, and the seasonal menus. Pick a slow night , and be sure to make a reservation.
Il Fornaio is always a busy place, and our dinner on a Tuesday night was no exception. We got stuck in traffic and arrived about 15 minutes past our reservation time. There was no issue with them holding the reservation, but the Hostess seated each party and there was a line at the check in desk. Seems like they need two persons, one to check in and one to seat. Our waiter was great, we told him we were going to a play, and he made sure our wine and meals came out quickly. Food was very good, and it usually is. My dining partner had ravioli with red sauce and I had a chicken dish over mashed potatoes with brocolini, and there was melted cheese on the three pieces of chicken. Quite good, and very filling. We will go back.
