We chose Il Fornaio for its convenient location before heading to the theater. We booked an early reservation to allow plenty of time for a relaxing dinner before the 7:00 p.m. show. The service was prompt and attentive throughout the evening—definitely the highlight of our experience. Pre-dinner drinks arrived quickly and were enjoyable, though the Old Fashioned leaned a bit too sweet for our taste. The pea and mint soup was thick but had a somewhat grainy texture. Our pasta dishes were just fair—nothing particularly memorable and easily replicable at home by a novice cook. The tiramisu had good flavor but was overly wet, which affected the mouthfeel. The atmosphere at Il Fornaio feels outdated, though it retains a certain nostalgic charm. Overall, while the food fell short of expectations, the service made the evening pleasant.

We went before a Center for Performing Arts show for my mom's birthday, and we had a great experience. They really took care of my mom and made her feel special. All of the food was outstanding, especially the pollo di parmagana that was a special. They got us out on time for the walk back to the center. I can't say enough about our waiter and the staff.

Had not eaten here in a few years and never at this particular location. Our food was very, very good and we were pleasantly surprised. Loved the no corkage fee for July. If you’re in the downtown San Jose area I highly recommend.

Our experience was pretty good. Our waiter was excellent. We were running late (we were delayed), and he paced the dinner perfectly so that we made it to the play on time. The food was good, and the portions generous. Two minor complaints: the restaurant now charges for bread, and the pepper for the salad is not offered. However, a small pepper mill was on the table, but it ground the pepper into too finely. Not cool for a restaurant like Il Forniao.

We had a 7:30pm reservation for 6 to celebrate our son’s high school graduation. Service definitely made an impact on our overall dining experience as our server was working extremely hard to manage 4-6 groups. From our perspective, they were likely short at least 1 more server. The manager on duty as well as the busser stepped in to fill the gaps. Gnocchi, penne, bolognese, and calamari were prepared well. The pollo al fungi was a bit salty. These were the reasons for the 4 star review rather than 5 stars.
