Good lunch this afternoon. Started with the calamari, good choice, though a bit pricey ($20) compared to everywhere else for comparable calamari appetizer. The manager happened to deliver the appetizer, with no app. plates, and forgot (ignored) our request for more lemon wedges. Entrees were all good. A couple pastas and a pizza. Tiramisu for dessert was good, though could benefit from an anglaise sauce to offset the dryness. Service was adequate for the most part.
We had lunch here on a Saturday before a theater performance. The server was professional but it was a long wait for our drinks and then for our food. I had the conchiglie con pollo pasta dish and my husband had the tagliatelle bolognesee. They were both tasty. The bread and olive oil are yummy. I enjoyed the house chardonnay very much.
Saturday 8am breakfast, busy. Have had better service in the past meals.
Eggs good. Orange juice freshly squeezed
Oatmeal was awful! It was over-cooked pre-sweeten with too much cinnamon and brown sugar/maple syrup. It had an ugly pink appearance and paste consistency. Could not swallow the gooey substance
The restaurant staff gave us a fine dining attentive service, choices were excellent, overall it was an outstanding experience
Need to remove water spots from wine glasses.
Water spots on the wine glasses on the tables along the window were really noticeable as the sun shined through the windows.
Food was fantastic. Service was exceptional. We were eating before a concert and our server made sure that our food came out in a timely manner. He was friendly and funny. The food was flavorful and better than expected. Would definitely go back.
This was a very disappointing meal. I always say Il Fornaio is consistently good but this night it wasn’t. My salad was wilted and my salmon was over cooked. They were busy and the kitchen was very slow.
I don't think I'd go there again. The food wasn't bad, but not sufficient to make me want to go back. I do have to compliment the server though: we had to get out on time for an evening event, and she was very accommodating and sped up our order.
Good quality food, service--would have liked to get happy hour drink price but since we were sitting 30 feet away from the bar--no discount.
We love the Esmeralda dish that is only served at lunch. We asked our waiter who asked the chef if we could have it hot dinner. Yes! Three orders. Bingo yummm
The food was good, but the service was poor. Our party of four waited over one hour after ordering until our salads arrived. Our entries were served well after the salads. We started at 5:15, so it wasn’t busy. When we inquired, the waiter was rude. Perhaps they were short-staffed, but there is no excuse for a rude waiter.
The restaurant has a very inviting atmosphere and is comfortable for a nice dining experience. My food, Gnocchi in pesto sauce tasted fine but was so small it could have been a child’s portion or an appetizer. It was very unsatisfying and priced ridiculously for the portion served. One diner at my table ordered coffee with dessert. Dessert came, was eaten and no coffee. We had to flag someone down and they said a new pot was brewing. No one bothered to tell us and it was way after the fact when we found out. The coffee order was cancelled. Not sure I will go back.
Ordinarily neutral to negative on this chain; however, San Jose turned this around. ASM Rumaldo Alvarez and waiter Christof made an early evening dinner for 4 into a very perfect dining experience for my mother-in-laws 100th birthday dinner. Excellent food, great service and personalized attention appropriate to the occasion . Honoree was thrilled. Will be back with wife (and possibly) with sports buddies. Interesting example for restraunteers how one locations performance affects the perception of your entire operation.
Great place to celebrate! Everyone was very friendly. Brinn was a great server and did an excellent job with everything from wine and food suggestions, serving it all just on time and fixing a slight problem quickly. The food was very good as well. Missing the Cappelacci Di Zucca very much but the rest was yummy.
Great choices of salads and appetizers
Entrees prepared well , generous and very tasty. I always feel like I am in a very special restaurant when I dine at Il Fornaio at the Sainte Claire Hotel.
I ordered grilled salmon, which came with broccoli rabe, fingerling carrots, and grilled new potatoes. The salmon was raw in the middle. The broccoli could not be cut with a knife; same thing with the carrots. And some of the potatoes were still crunchy in the center. Our server completely agreed that the dish was unacceptable and removed it from our bill. My dinner partner (from Italy) ordered the Gnocchi alla Sorrentina. It came with little lumps of gnocchi and similar little lumps of whole garlic. It looked and tasted nothing like an authentic gnocchi alla Sorrentina! It was 90% chopped tomatoes. What happened to the mozzarella? The service was unremarkable.
Our waitress was the best!! She never tried to rush us to order our food and always made sure we had everything we needed! I would have her wait on us again and again! She was very kind and patient. I hope you will share this review with her!! Thank her again from the Grissom family.
We had brunch at 11 and the restaurant was very quiet, by noon, the restaurant was full . The service was great and the meal delicious.
Because I put that it was an anniversary dinner they gave us a complementary glass of champagne. The food was outstanding. We'll have to go back again soon.
A perfect lunch for three! Wonderful service.
Very good food, nice staff and beautiful atmosphere.
We had a business lunch while attending an event at the convention center that is nearby the Westin San Jose where the restaurant is located. The waiter disposition was poor - he needs a different job in life and frankly the food was not well prepared. Some of guests had stomach problems after dinner - embarrassing for me who invited them. It has been a while since I had been to Il Fornaio and this is not the class of restaurant that I remember.
Odd menu, would prefer more protein choices and traditional Italian but all of our meals were great- se code was fantastic and my customer said whoever picked this place diss a great job.
Amazing! Helpful staff. Great food
The pasta arrived lukewarm and gummy. It was not enjoyable to eat. All 4 people in our party had a lot of pasta left on our dishes - just could not make ourselves finish it. We were so disappointed with this experience.
We visit your restaurant every year when we are in town. We will be back next year. The food is great, as well as the service, and the atmosphere.
I have dined at il Fornaio on several occasions and the experience is always superb. Excellent food. Warm and elegant ambiance. Excellent service. Overall outstanding.
Very accommodating staff- we had to change up our headcount a few times for a large party. Food is great love the atmosphere. We were very pleased!
We have been coming to eat here for 25 years and love everything about the restaurant. As with so many places, the high prices have limited our visits now. If you want a special atmosphere for a special occasion, this is it.
This is my favorite Il Fornaio location. Inside the historic St. Claire hotel in San Jose, you can't beat the ambience.
Service was super slow. Servers walked by for 12 min and never acknowledged that we were there. No one came by to offer something to drink until the server was ready to take the order. When the food did arrive, the servers literally reached over each of us to place down the plates. Water glasses were handled by the rim. Totally unprofessional for the price being charged. You would get better and more professional service at a diner.
Great. College graduation
There were 6 of us for Father’s Day dinner. We had reservations and were seated promptly. Our waiter was the best! He was attentive, but not intrusive. Extra bread, more water, etc. was brought to us right away. We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening and hopefully will be back soon!
Our table was in area with a lot of foot traffic which was bit awkward. Service was also a bit slow.
Business lunch with out of town clients was at 11:30 opening. Greeter and staff were always kind and enjoying their roles. Menus were great, setting and of course, the food was great. My client was impressed and closing a deal based on a great experience.
Food was excellent, everyone found something they really enjoyed, even a Vegan attendee. Wine was fairly expensive for a moderate quality by the glass. Must sit at the bar to get the specials. Will go back.
We were short on time and needed to get in and out ( unfortunately) but was great that our server was on top of it and helped make it happen 👍🏼
The food was good a d service very good. For the prices, I would prefer a few other restaurants.
We went on a Friday night and the restaurant was not crowded. we had a seat in the back where there was little noise so we could chat comfortably. we split a beet salad from the main menu and had 3 of the Ligurian specialties that are offered in June. all were excellent and filling so we skipped dessert. the recommended Ligurian wines paired well with the food. Our waiter, Frank, was professional, informative, helpful, and non obtrusive. All in all a pleasant pretheater dinner.
