We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here. We shared a couple of appetizers and a dessert, and everything was good. The service was friendly also, and the room has a nice ambiance.
The pasta was cooked perfectly. The noise level was fine for carrying on a good conversation. Our party enjoyed everything that was served from the bread to entree to the dessert.
Good Italian restaurant in down town San Jose. Very good ambiance and good lunch selection.
Not too crowded on a week day and good location for a business lunch.
Prices have gone up a lot and too high for their offerings.
Good food and wine!!!!
What else can I say?
Go there at least 5 times a year
Bland food, all around. Salad was far over chilled and flavorless. Services was slow.
This is a great spot to have a drink and catch up with friends after work!
Waiters or servers are very nice and food was so great
It was my birthday and my son took me to dinner. We were enjoying our appetizer and the waitress showed up with our entree. That was very disruptive and disappointing.
Very mediocre. Food was tasteless and disappointing.
A business meal before the Dhatks game worked out well. Server was good. Great cocktails. We both had excellently prepared pasta dishes.
We felt hurried
Ordered pizza had to send back. Not hot.
Next one really good.
Manager made it up to us.
He deserves the star.
Two colleagues and I had dinner at Il Fornaio two days ago. The food was excellent. I really enjoyed the butternut squash ravioli. Being so close to the San Jose Convention Center on the evening of a conference, we expected it might be noisy, but it wasn't. It has great ambience and service and delicious food.
Food was average, prices were not, service was good. I had higher expectations and will probably not be back anytime soon.
Delicious food with very friendly and accommodating staff
Service is not really good for the premium price.
Food is ok not what I expect
The place looks good and quiety
While I would recommend this restaurant to others, there are other choices in the neighborhood that are better. The martinis were very good. The food was served in large order it, but was nothing exceptional. We have that other bill for Ngaio restaurant and found them to be more welcoming with better food.
My server Pat was super attentive. The food and wine were excellent. A great atmosphere. Highly recommend.
Some of the employees seemed brand new and poorly trained. With the number of employees in
site, service should have been much better than it was.
Such a great room was very disappointed to see how much it has slipped. We continue to witness a total
drop off in Restaurant service and quality even though prices continue to escalate in this Area.
The overall talent pool in many areas continues to erode seemingly due to the low unemployment rate.
I urge management to position themselves in the Middle of the Dinning Room and be more determined
to fix the apparent lack of experience we witnessed.
I urge Management to offer the multi course FestivalRegional complete meal special like most of the other
II Fornio locations including Palo Alto.
We want to love Il Fornaio but they just can’t deliver. We go there for pre show dinners two times a month. They don’t seem to to understand the the needs of their patrons. The staff , while friendly, seems to be unintuitive. We asked for the wine order first, instead we received soup and salid then, later our wine. The entres arrived in hot plates with warm sauce and pasta but with refridgerator cold Cantiloni and meat balls. They just don’t seem to get it. I then ordered an espresso, brought to me by a manager, it was in a regular size coffee cup and room temperature cool. IL Fornaio presents itself as a European style Bistro/ Restaurant but the San Jose restaurant simply can’t deliver on that promise.
This was our first time at the San Jose Il Fornaio location, and we loved it. We went for dinner, then to a concert at the San Jose Civic Center, which was only a block away. It was my birthday, which the hostess and waitress both mentioned. The food was delicious, the staff was wonderful. It was a very nice evening!
The food was pretty good, not "knock your socks off" good but above average. The service was slow - we had to request for our check and still had to wait even for a while even after our request. The water-man was attentive and frequently our table quite often, filling our glasses. It also took a while for our meal to be served, so make sure you plan for this.
It was my husband's 75th birthday and we had enjoyed an early celebration the weekend before with family at a lovely restaurant in Sacramento. But the actual day seemed to call for something more than our usual weekday dinner at home. We chose Il Fornaio because we live close by so no driving, no parking and the opportunity to enjoy that extra glass of wine. And also it's generally reliable and on weekdays usually quiet enough so two people can enjoy a pleasant conversation with dinner.
But the evening was a disaster! The bare bones of it is that the waiter who brought us our first glass of wine and a salad announced that the kitchen wouldn't split the salad, took off without leaving any utensils to do so and was never seen again. When our dishes and glasses had sat empty for nearly half an hour I asked the front desk person if she could locate our server but neither she nor the assistant manager were able to do so. A second waiter was assigned to our table and he went in search of our entrees. I don't know what had happened, but it took another twenty minutes before he reappeared and they arrived. I was truly angry and honestly next to tears because this was to be our date night on husband's birthday and I had made the restaurant decision.
To be fair, the food was good when it finally arrived and at her own insistence, the assistant manager comped our entire meal. I don't imagine there was much else she could do. At the end a generous slice of tiramisou appeared, embellished with birthday wishes in Italian. So the food was good, the conversation was audible and enjoyable, and we could walk home, but how that all unfolded the way it did is beyond me. It was more than a small screw-up, it was almost like a French farce, except it wasn't amusing. There are plenty of restaurants in downtown San Jose these days and I don't suppose I'm going back to Il Fornaio any time soon.
Disappointing. Potential for great food. Falls short. Vitello al limone was good, but way too lemony, and I am a well known lemon lover! Sauces should be subtle and complement the food, rather than overwhelm the flavors. Pizza with Proscuto and shaved Parmesan was served cold! Explanation by server after the fact, proscuto would shrivel up. May be menu should state pizza would be cold. No offer to substitute or offer compensation. Shared veal with companion and waiter boxed pizza. Last, but not least, found spot on tablecloth when moved bread dish...Expected tablecloth to be clean and spotless. Thank G-d for the wonderful Mozart Opera next door, before the fiasco of dinner!
Very disappointing visit given the high price for the experience. Server was mediocre, only came to check on us a few times and when passing our plates (we were at a booth) he had us "pass them down" instead of taking the 10 seconds to walk around the table. Food was a big disappointment. The salad was overdressed, the veal scallopine was chewy, the pizza was undercooked, and even our cappuccino was luke warm. Next time will go to Joe's next door. Too bad, as we love the I.F. in Burlingame.
Very nice restaurant, nice ambiance, very good service, I was accomodated with an entree that was not on the menu. Excellent desserts. Overall, one of my favourite restaurants
The service was deplorable! We were seated at 6:30 as per our reservation with a concert start of 8:00, which we told them from the start. We waited 20 minutes before anyone came to take a drink order. This was after asking twice for a waiter. We waited another 10 minutes before the waiter returned to take our food order. We were told that they would get us out of there in plenty of time. We waited 15 minutes before the drinks arrived. It would have been faster to go to the bar ourselves. The food arrived at 7:25. The steak was gristly. The seafood and mixed drink were good. We were told that there were two big events that evening. As a restaurant right in the thick of it, wouldn't you plan for that though? The poor service put a strain on our experience. We walked into the concert venue when the first song started to play. Really unacceptable.
My wife and I had dinner here recently. It is an attractive setting and the service was good.
We shared a Caesar salad and each ordered a seafood pasta dish, which was expensive (around $30). The wait person told us the dish was spicy, which was fine with us.
The food was very bland and certainly not spicy. It wasn’t tasteless, but close. We were very disappointed.
My wife had a mixed drink, which was very weak on alcohol, and I had a glass of wine. Both were very expensive for what we got.
For all of this, our bill was $102 before the tip. The food and drinks were definitely not worth it.
There are a lot of very good restaurants in downtown San Jose. Sadly, it appears Il Fornaio is not one of them.
Everything except the food was amazing.
Another nice dinner before the theater. The service and the pasta were very good.
Very bad altitude, I had reservation the other day at lunch. I arrived there on time with my guest, but the guy at the check point can not find my reservation. After I went to other place, the open table sent me an email that I missed my lunch reservation.
Comfortable setting for after opera dinner. Miss the fixed price, tri-course offering. No longer offered.
We were late for our reservation due to traffic and we had a time commitment. Our server was the absolute best - even had time for dessert and 15 minutes to spare!
Our server was excellent and congenial and came by many times. The bus-man was also good. The 3 of us enjoyed the wine, 3 different kinds of delicious bread, and our pasta and beet salad choices. I generally have the penne vodka because it's so wonderful. It was a delightful meal and we enjoyed our window table.
Everything in this restaurant was pleasant: ambiance, food and service.
I think that appetizers were the best. Minestrone soup and sea bass as the main dish was tasty too.
Definitely we will come back .
Everyone at our table had the seafood skewers and loved the dish. It was absolutely delicious.
Service was excellent also.
Enjoyed our meal and Tristan was friendly and attentive. Pleasant ambiance!
Gluten-free pasta was the best pasta gluten free or otherwise that I have ever eaten. Very impressive. Service was a little slow and we ended up running late for our event... that was disappointing, but the food was worth it.
Bad food, bad service. It’s gone way downhill over the years. Go somewhere else
Amazing food. Top of the line service. The manager came around multiple times to check on how we were doing and welcomed us to the restaurant, as it was our first time. We had the calamari for ab Appetizer and two pasta dishes. Just superb!!! Would definitely recommend to anyone in the San Jose area!
