Il Fornaio - San Francisco Ratings and Reviews
What an absolute gem of a place! I work nearby and this is my go-to lunch spot. Their salads are amazing -- so tasty, so fresh! I also love the warm pastas when I'm treating myself to some carbs! I definitely recommend if you work close by and have time to stop in for a quick bite. The atmosphere is really cozy and gives me such a nice break from being in the office all day.
Went for brunch on a Sunday - but decided to eat a regular meal since we got up so late. The brunch menu looked great, but the regular lunch menu was our treat. Wonderful Antipasto, easily shared by the two of us. Great bread served with extra-virgin olive oil - tasty. This restaurant has good bread and wine - so what's not to like! The main dish we shared was a mixed seafood grill - shrimp, scallops and calamari - plentiful and delicious. But the biggest treat of all was their Zabaglione - best we have ever had - don't miss it.
Stopped in at the San Francisco Il fonraio by accident... took a tour of the bar and saw they had an amazing happy hour. Went in, met Estefania the general restaurant and right away, I felt at home & genuinely welcomed.
Our server Richard selected our appetizers since my date & I couldn't decide. He brought back the most flavorful polpettine con ricotta (meatballs in a red pasta sauce). It was seasoned to perfection!! The sauce, was bold and zesty. Off to a great start.
My date ordered the linguine mare chiaro
(Thin flat pasta with clams, mussels, prawns and scallops; seasoned with tomatoes, crushed red pepper) I practically ignored my entree and focused on hers... inch thick scallops and the clams were my favorite find in that treasure trove of delights.
I was on a first date and impressions really matter.
You and your team got me a second date! I will definitely be back with friends.
The team deserves praise and recognition for their hospitality and charisma.
I just had lunch here and it was amazing!! I started with a fresh, green salad with juicy tomatoes and a light vinaigrette. Next I had a butternut squash ravioli. It was one of the best pastas I have ever tasted! It was smothered in warm butter and crispy sage — such a great dish to make me feel cozy on a winter day!
The device was top notch and I felt very welcome from the moment I stepped in. Their hostess was very sweet and our server was super attentive! Five stars to Il Fornaio!
Came here with a group of friends on a Friday evening. Imagine my surprise when I saw that they have fresh made pasta on the menu. I had been craving fresh made pasta for months now after finding out that the place I used to frequent stopped making their pasta in house. We were greeted by a cheerful waitress, I believe her name is Carlie. I asked her many questions about the menu before deciding upon one of the pastas that was made in house. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the bolognese sauce was perfectly seasoned. Throughout the meal, Carlie was always on top of getting our drinks filled and getting our table cleared after finishing our appetizers, entrees, and dessert. I had the panna cotta for dessert and it was spectacular. Not overly sweet (just perfect!) and you get nice chunks of fruit with every bite.
The atmosphere of the restaurant makes it ideal for a date night or close friends getting together to catch up at a place where you don't have to shout over everyone else.
I found my new restaurant, when I travel to San Francisco, for fresh made pasta.
Wow! I cannot say enough about the atmosphere, food & service here! We came for our anniversary and felt so celebrated. There is plenty of parking. Every dish we had was mouthwateringly delicious! Our booth was quiet and intimate. Our server was very attentive, refilling our glasses and recommending an excellent wine (& providing the backstory). We had no complaints. They even brought us free dessert with candles for every year we had been wed. To top it off, as they packed away our leftovers they also brought us little olive oil and vinegar dishes as souvenirs. We had a great night and would absolutely recommend! Thank you!
Great ambience , food and servers !! We went there to celebrate our friend's birthday , they were so attendant and lovable especially our server Sihan , and for our surprise he was Nepanese like us so we felt like home, also they were so generous by not charging us for the birthday dessertI really recommend this place and from now on it will be one of my favorite.
We chose Il Fornaio this evening to celebrate our dear friends birthday. Scott was our server and was super attentive. He made sure we were each sporting a smile. Drinks were good, food was great and came out in a timely manner. Estefania, manager stop by to greet us & reconfirm our smiles were authentic. Very friendly and made us feel like family. Love this place, will recommend it and will be back.
I have been a fan of this restaurant for years, mostly in southern CA. Having moved to Colorado, I was looking forward to a decent dinner experience even though I expected Thanksgiving to be a little hectic. Once we sat down, right by the kitchen even though we had asked for the other room (no problem, lots of people) we sat for 25 minutes ignored until I got up to speak to the hostess who went out of her way to get us a waiter. Clearly they overbooked reservations. Everyone was harried. Sitting by the kitchen I could see them literally picking up handfuls of salad and throwing them onto plates--not appetizing. I went here because while others preferred the main menu, I wanted my traditional turkey diner. It came cold--2 slices of cold meat, no gravy, small clump of hard yams, a spoonful of mashed potatoes swimming in watery pink sauce which I think was supposed to be cranberry sauce and and equal dab of mushy dressing. All this for $27. I was so disappointed. The other food tasted better, with he exception of the soggy salad, but was also less than warm and not as good as the quality I have come to expect for this restaurant.
I realize it was a holiday but they need to realize that every party is trying to enjoy a special holiday dinner. It was very expensive and to make matters worse, the wood border around our brother was very dirty. I could write in the dust with my finger.. Did they not really clean before this day? Sadly I am reluctant to return to this Il Fornaio or to any Il Fornaio at this point.
THE RESTAURANT IS EXCELLENT HOWEVER THEY SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO SERVE A TRADITIONAL THANKSGIVING MEAL, THE TURKEY WAS LIKE RUBBER THE DRESSING WAS VERY WATERY AND THE YAMS WERE DEFINITELY NOT CANDIED THEY WERE MORE LIKE CANNED. OVERALL VERY DISAPPOINTING CONSIDERING THE REPUTATION OF IL FORNAIO.
Went for Thanksgiving. Was very ordinary. They were way too busy but our waiter tried hard and was very nice. They're better at Italian for lunch when they're not churning out a plate a second. Also, portions were fine for me, but my male friend would have liked more.
I haven't had bad service in a restaurant for a very long time but our waiter on Thanksgiving Day , Mario was very inattentive (I think he forgot about us). The proper items were not brought to us and I had to grab a busser to try and get a dessert menu. I will never go back as the service was so bad.
I had the chicken pasta. I could hardly find any chicken, and minimal tomato sauce. For years I came to lunch here every week to eat the rotisserie half chicken. Unfortunately they took it off the lunch menu; only at dinner. What the heck -- it's one of your best dishes! Pls put it back on the menu!! Your calzone is always excellent. And the bread is outstanding. Wait staff is good too.
I can't comment on other types of meal (e.g., lunch, dinner) but the food at brunch ranged from very good (poached eggs and crab cakes) to disappointing (fruit and yogurt - which lacked texture). We frequently eat lunch at the Corte Madera Il Fornaio which we find to be reliably very good.
Met up with some friends passing through San Francisco. Wanted a nice quiet place for Sunday brunch. Il Fournaio was perfect! The service was refined. the food choices were interesting and varied. Only disappointment - we saw another table offered pastries from a large tray. gee whiz - wish we had known to ask for that! (we'd finished eating by then)
I remember when the food was excellent at Il Fornaio. It was mediocre. We had the special Taste of Piemonte three course dinner. Each of us had different dishes. My father was from Piemonte and I know the cuisine well. Nothing remotely about the flavors were Piemontese. The service was excellent, they allowed our dog out on the heated patio, and the restaurant is visually appealing, all pluses. I am hoping it was just an off night.
Hands down one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco! I'm pretty picky when it comes to food and service just because I've spent many years working in the food industry. The service here is AMAZING and on point! Very attentive and the manager and waiter are the sweetest. My boyfriend and I always requests the same server! Food is great. Best tiramisu! Highly recommended! The pasta's definitely some of the best I've ever had and everything the server recommended was amazing. The capellaci di zucca was amazing and definitely made in house. The pizza's we ordered were both amazing made with fresh ingredients and quite delicious and full of flavor. The salmon was cooked to perfection and went well with the veggies they came with, wow if I had room I would definitely have had seconds. Aside from the amazing food the service was wonderful, on point and impeccable. Great fountain view, Italian experience, great people working there, beautiful open kitchen where you can see our great getting made. Our server was attentive and definitely walked is through the menu and made some great suggestions that did not disappoint. Having been here many I am definitely looking forward to coming back and recommending this great restaurant with authentic Italian food.
The last time I was at Il Fornaio in San Francisco was 26 years ago with my husband for brunch. We had such great memories, that I knew I had to go again when I returned to San Francisco last weekend with a friend. It is still fantastic and lived up to my memory!
I called in ahead to ensure appetizers were there when we received when we arrived at 1145 and we got there and they told us that it wouldn't be ready until noon. When we got the food, it was COLD!
we ordered our food - it was bland, cold, sloppy plating, and it was not very tasty. I've had better at Olive Garden. HUGE disappointment, especially since it was a celebration lunch. HORRIBLE FOOD. Ambience and service was great but the food was disgusting.
FOOD: Gnocchi was chewy, chicken shell pasta was bland - no flavor, seafood medley - all the seafood was chewy and over cooked, penne in vodka sauce - gross - just gross.
Came here with a group of 6 as a recommendation from my friend. We came right when they opened so there was plenty of seating. They have a lot of on their menu, different types of pasta, pizza and salads! I like how they have an option to have a smaller portion of pasta, so I can get a salad or even save room for their amazing tiramisu! If you are a tiramisu lover then this is the place for you. Our server Mario was very sweet and knowledgeable. It great when server know their food and know what to recommend you. We sat on their lovely outside area where there had a fountain. Overall this place is amazing for the quality, portion and price. Will definitely come here again!
Amazing amazing amazing. We drove from Berkeley to San Francisco for the first time since moving to NorCal and found this gem on Yelp! Authentic Italian food with great service. Our family was treated like royalty by all the staff, especially the manager and Daylan our lovely server. The creative anitpasti was delish and everything that followed after was 5-star quality. The linguini Mare chiaro was amazing Highly recommend!
