Il Fornaio - Sacramento Ratings and Reviews
We had THE BEST short ribs on the Dine Downtown Sacramento Ill Fornaio menu. Perfectly done. Melt in your mouth. With wilted spinach and mashed potatoes. Gravy was delicious. Highlighted by a glass of Jamison Estates Cab. Recommended by our waiter, and he was right! So smooth. The dessert was wonderful, a hazelnut chocolate molteny cake w/ a vanilla type gelato-half serving which was perfect. Everything was great from the service to food. Attentive & friendly are the people who work there.
I dine with my family at Il Fornaio fairly regularly and the food is always delicious and creative. I have noticed however that the service is worsening over my past few visits, even when it was not very busy. The servers are not attentive and do not seem to be interested in finding out if the dining experience is optimum. They appear cold and impersonal. It's a shame as the food and restaurant as a whole are great- but seriously need to work on the service!
Sunday / 7th evening: Both Host and Hostess were terribly uninterested and seemed inconvenienced at our timely arrival (party of 3, had reservations).
Indifferent host tried to seat us at table protruding from line of booths, though almost half the booths were empty (@6:15 pm). I asked for, and we were accommodated (w/o good grace) at a vacant booth. Later noticed another (also minority) family seated at the inconveniently-placed table ... probably just a coincidence?
Food was fine. Our son likes the calamari.
We enjoyed the experience overall. The food was good and we couldn't wait to try the special dessert of Apple Strudel. However, the service was so slow that we didn't have time to order it. Our reservations were at 6 and by 7:40, we still had not been offered a chance to order the dessert. It was fun to listen to the operatic version of Happy Birthday a couple of times! The menu was varied and the food was good. I just wish the service had been better.
Came to celebrate a college graduation. Had written this on the open table reservation when made. No acknowledgement of special occasion. Server took one of the 4 wine glasses off the table which belonged to the college graduate who is 22 years old. Guess the server assumed she wasn’t old enough to drink, but left glass on table for our son who isn’t even 21. This was embarrassing for the college grad and seemed presumptuous. The 4 of us split two $12.50 salads that came without dressing on them. Had to wait a while and flag the server down to tell her they forgot dressing and she assumed we just needed extra dressing and brought a small bowl without apologizing or acknowledging that this was a mistake. Server barely gave eye contact and was not friendly. Disappointing service for a bill that was almost $200.
This is a great Special Occasion venue. The food is always good. We have been here many times over the years. I have a hard time not getting the Linguine mare chiaro, which is so good, but got the ravioli last time which was amazing. The desserts are great too - especially like the Spumone Gelato - Very unique
We had a great NYE dinner at Il Fornaio. We invited some friends that had never been and they really enjoyed the atmosphere as well as the food. We were seated by the live music on NYE which was fabulous. Thanks again for a wonderful evening !
I was looking forward to a scrumptious dinner, based on my experience at Il Fornaio in Carmel. It was New Year's Eve. Service was good but food mediocre - we waited 45 minutes for our entrees that tasted like they had sat under a warming light for a long time - pasta was tough and chicken dry; portions small. Not the quality and prep advertised. Desserts were equally underwhelming. So disappointed, and sick that I wasted $140.
Another night of great service and ambiance! All four meals were better than antcipated. We ordered an appetizer, salads, raviolis, pizza and wine. The servings were ample for the males and the flavor was big and robust in each meal. We will all return soon, thanks to our wonderful waiter, who split his time between the young adult table and the old married couple. Bravo!
A fabulous experience that will hopefully be repeated again soon! We celebrated my wife's birthday with family and were able to surprise her with the attendance of one daughter with help from Il Fornaio staff. From the elegant surroundings, delicious food, and attentively timed navigation through the course of the meal paced on our schedule, we relished our visit. Pure excellence! Thank you!
This was our 2nd time trying this restaurant and what a difference a great server can make. During our first experience we had a horrible waitress that ruined our entire experience. This time was a completely different experience. The food was fantastic, the wine great, the ambiance pleasant, and the entire service staff was amazing! I am already looking forward to our next dinner here!
Food was average and not inspiring - the opposite of delicate that you associate with fine Italian food. Veal piccata was tough and sauce was thick like gravy. Ravioli were also very thick and chewy. On the plus side - Atmosphere is charming & wait staff was knowledgeable and very efficient.
This wasn't the best trip I've had to Il Fornaio, it was jam packed and our waiter was clearly under a lot of pressure, which translated to a bit of pressure on our holiday lunch to hurry up, make decisions, interrupt our conversations constantly. I think this is understandable in the middle of the holiday rush. More disappointing, the food was a little so-so. I've always had a good experience here in the past so I'd say it was an off-day. I'd recommend the restaurant re-consider the ravioli, it wasn't up to usual standards.
it was extremely comfortable, inviting, the whole atmosphere was "delicious".
the waitress was attentive but never obtrusive, and so very kind and helpful.
the oh-so-high ceilings were cool, but the atmosphere never cold.
and our gluten free dishes were scrumptious (am i allowed to say that?
thank you kindly

We chose Il Fornaio for our anniversary dinner date. We were able to reserve the restaurant with no problems. The service from the hostess to the waiter to gal bringing us our water and bread was very friendly and warm. The atmosphere is a bit loud but we had a cozy table in the back and we didn't find the noise to be a problem. The restaurant has an old yet modern feel. There is small architecture details that give it that old Italy feel. Our waiter was very helpful with menu questions and suggestions. Both of our meals were amazing. We shared the seafood risotto and the Spaghetti Mazara which had fresh melt in your mouth lobster in it. They paired our dinners with the appropriate wines and they did compliment the meal quiet nicely. Since we were celebrating our anniversary they did bring us a complimentary desert to share which was a nice touch. The restaurant is inside the Wells Fargo building and it was decorated so beautifully for Christmas. Made for a good photo op. I would definitely suggest Il Fornaio to anyone looking for a good authentic Italian meal. Romantic and fun for any date.
This restaurant seems to consistently please us-- the attention to detail is there in both the food and service, and the atmosphere is very enjoyable-- "festively" loud, but not too loud to prevent hearing one another (even in very busy times). Delicious food, and service always professional.
I love this restaurant and the building itself. This time the party of 4 each tried different dishes....one person ordered the ravioli, one the veal, one the short ribs and one the spaghetti and meat balls. We sampled each other choices and loved them all! This time of year the Wells Fargo lobby is gorgeous with its huge Christmas trees creatively decorated. A perfect setting for a holiday photo op.
Our group of friends had our holiday dinner at the restaurant. We were fortunate to get a room with plenty of space, including extra tables for gifts. The service was excellent and they took good care of us. Thank you for a wonderful time! We will come back!
