About Il Fornaio - Pasadena
Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers.
Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2007.

Il Fornaio - Pasadena Ratings and Reviews
We sat on the patio so we could bring our dog. She is 80 pounds and the staff was very nice to avoid her big body as they passed by. The food was amazing as always and the staff accommodated our 3.5+ meal that we enjoyed leisurely. Thanks Gerry for a special evening!
Food was fresh and delicious. Ambiance was absolutely beautiful. Service was absolutely lacking from the waiter. He was pretentious and not helpful or participative. It ruined the experience and really has me wondering if I will ever go back. Right now I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone as there are many other terrific Italian restaurants out there with superb service, food and ambiance to make a dining experience all that you wish it to be for a special occasion. Quite an unfortunate outcome to my evening as we were celebrating a special event and the poor service from the waiter, not the other wait staff, really ruined it.
Always excellent quality food and attentive service. We make a reservation just to make sure we have a table and can sit outside because we love their outdoor dining area. When it’s chilly they have heaters so it’s always a great atmosphere. I can’t say enough about how great the food is!
Location and services were Excellent , but the food has changed -- Not as good as it used to be. Maybe they have new kitchen staff, but the food was NOT very good. I have been going to this location for many years , and last Saturday it was NOT good at all. Food was just TASTELESS, something needs to be done to rectify this issue. Hope to be back and taste the changes.
Service was great! Seafood pasta was fresh and perfectly el dente. Restaurant was not loud, so everyone could have a decent conversation. The chocolate brownie was to die for, a perfect end to the meal. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Keep up the good consistent work.
The food was good and authentic. The ambiance and location were excellent. The best part would still come down to the staff who were welcoming, helpful, friendly and courteous. One disappointing aspect was that Il Fornaio advertises itself as providing a free corkage on MONDAYS. We brought our own bottle of wine as this was a special occasion, yet we were charged a $20 corkage fee on a Monday for one bottle of wine. Should have honored their advertised free corkage on Mondays.
We always enjoy the patio, and when we arrived for our 7:15 res on a Saturday night they whisked us away to our table on the patio. Problem was that we were sort of jammed together w/another table w/a larger group. I asked for a table by the wall....no problem. Off to a new table! Excellent and reliable!
I've gone to Il Fornaio many times and have always looked forward to it, until now. Our experience Saturday night has definitely dampened my enthusiasm. I was seated before my husband, and although several tables were seated after I sat down, the wait staff never once approached my table to ask if I wanted water or something else to drink, but they did ask all the other tables around me. When my husband arrived, we still had to wait quite a while to get any service. We ordered cocktails, but they weren't delivered until I got up and went to the waiter to remind him about the cocktails - they were finally delivered after we'd been served (and finished) our appetizers. Given the prices of the meals and cocktails at Il Fornaio, I would expect better service and better tasting food.
Il Fornaio is one of our favorite restaurants in LA. We are fans of Italy. A visit to Il Fornaio brings back the memories. The staff is highly attentive. We like the location in Old Town Pasadena. Parking is convenient (they validate for the public parking structures). We have our favorite menu items, but have always enjoyed anything that we order. We need to go more often to try other things. Also like their seasonal variations, and regions of Italy variations throughout the year.
Felt like the kitchen had an off night. Husband's calimari was totally inedible, his prawns were completely oversalted, and his halibut wasn't cooked right. My chicken was good. We had performance tickets so we chose not to send it back. But even if we wanted to, the waiter didn't come back to check on how the food turned out.
I usually like this restaurant but it's either changed management or we were there on a bad day. We sat on the patio, which I highly recommend. My husband joined us after about 10 minutes and during that time, the waitress would appear and then disappear. We never heard the specials. I ordered an ice coffee and got charged for a latte. Nothing was left on the table - no cream for the coffee, no additional oil and vinegar for the bread. I put in the reservation that it was my mom's 88th birthday and we had to tell both the bus boy and waitress that before the waitress got us a special dessert. And she brought it out after I left the table for the restroom. The food was OK but not up to snuff. I'd probably eat there again, but not for brunch.
We like Il Fornaio, and enjoy dining there, but we haven't been very satisfied with the service staff there. Everybody is so rushed or stressed and almost nervous juat tp get through the night, instead of making their guests feel happy and relaxed.
Never talk about their menu or any introductions.
Guests are just numbers.
It had been awhile since I'd dined at the Pasadena branch of Il Fornaio but after our last meal there, it won't be long before I return. Our dinner was sandwiched in-between enjoying the Norton Simon & getting to the Pasadena Park & Ride to take us to the Hollywood Bowl for Tom Petty. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and helped us stay on schedule. The restaurant faces a nice courtyard (inside & patio dining) & can be a little hard 2 find. Several parking structures are available. When U make reservations find out which one they have a contract with so they can validate your tic.
Nice menu, $20 corkage, wonderful bread (they sell it). I love their monthly Festa Regionale menus focusing on regions in Italy (Sicily last month). You can choose between different options to make an individualized price-fixed meal, which at $37 was a tasty bargain.
Every time we dine, the Hostess is thoughtful and prompt, Ravi(the Manager) visits the table and we share our thoughts, This Time Alissa, our waitress gave us great incite into the menu she was expert at, and the wine steward could not have been more helpful.
Il Fornaio is promoting regional menus with special gifts each time you dine with wine flights of recommended wines for each course. This is the fourth time my co-workers and I have participated, and its really fun. The menus are creative, the wine pairings are excellent, and although we spend more than we would normally for a dinner out together, we are going to continue to participate through the entire promotion, which ends in January, I believe. Its super fun, and must be successful for the restaurant. Its an excellent marketing tool in my opinion.
