About Il Fornaio - Pasadena

Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers.
Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2007.

We hadn’t been to Il Fornaio in years so were pleased to find reliably good, fresh food and excellent service on our return. The risotto special was superb, the carpaccio light and bright, the kids’ pasta rich and simple. Desserts were luscious. Glad to be back on the West Coast to revisit one of our preferred dining venues.

We were in town for the Rose Parade and someone recommend this.
Simply Fantastic. Crappy table but that's my fault for reserving at the last minute.
Fantastic Food, Great wine list, and my wife. On NYE. Thanks Leanne Suter for the recommendation.

Restaurant was in a nice location close to our hotel, the ambience was nice and relaxing, server was friendly and efficient, but we were disappointed with the meal. The food seemed average at best. We expected more for such a nice restaurant.

One of the nicest patio dining spaces in Old Pasadena. In the evening the ambiance is excellent. There are heaters if needed, and food and service is always excellent. In the afternoon it's a nice space and the weather is usually beautiful. Try this restaurant, I think you'll like it.

I usually enjoy the restaurant. Christmas Eve was hectic and we ended up in the bar area well past our reservation time. Like over an hour past. I ordered the lobster special which was terrible. Overall the atmosphere was fun but it seemed the kitchen was totally overwhelmed.

We were going to Christmas Eve services in Pasadena and wanted somewhere to dine beforehand. I hadn't been to Il Fornaio in ages - and I regret that it had been so long. It was a great place for a holiday dinner. The decorations and vibe were just what we wanted for a cozy Christmastime experience. The food was very good and the service was just right. I also ordered a wine flight, and the pours were very generous. All in all it was a really lovely night.

Food was over cooked, flavorless, and very late in arriving at the table. Very disappointed in the quality of the meal. The waitress apologized for the wait but the food was just not good. I ordered the lasagna. It was dried out, flavorless and very disappointing.

Great food, like usual. A bit pricey, as usual, though it is expected of course... though I must say my date was rather disappointed to discover that you no longer serve marshmallows with your hot chocolate!

Had lunch with a friend at this Pasadena location for the first time. Very nice ambiance with Christmas light decorations. Food was excellent. I had the caprese salad and ravioli. Excellent service, friendly customer oriented staff. There is parking structure across the street ($7.00) but I chose to valet park ($10 with validation). Will definitely return.

Wow... hadn't been here in years and I was really disappointed by our recent experience. We had reservations for 6 people at 5pm and we showed up right on time, but when we arrived we ended up waiting 15 minutes to be seated. We made early reservations intentionally because we knew it wouldn't be crowded and we needed to drive back to the west side after dinner and wanted to be home at a decent hour. There were tons of empty tables at that time as we predicted. Then the hostess kind of gave me an annoyed response when I checked with her after already waiting for 10 minutes. Once seated, a few other things were lacking service wise. Our biggest gripe was that when the server asked if we were ready to order, we said that we just need another minute or two. Then she disappeared for 15-20 minutes. Wouldn't have been a huge deal but we didn't have any drinks or apps at the table aside from a small plate of olive oil and a few pieces of bread to share. So in the end, it was nearly 6pm by the time any apps or drinks came to the table when we had a 5pm rez. Beyond that, the food was only so so at best. I don't write many reviews because I typically don't have a ton to gripe about. However, the overall experience we had at Il Fornaio was bad enough that a few days later I'm still wishing we had gone somewhere else.

Even with a reservation we still had to wait 30 minutes to be seated. The hostess at the front was extremely rude to us. Our server, however, was fantastic. Unfortunately the food missed the mark. My pasta dish was cold and lacked flavor. Everyone in my party thought their food was mediocre. I don’t see myself returning here.

The host never came to get us at the bar and we didn’t get credit for the reservation. We ate at the bar area and the service was good, but the host team was the worst, completely bush league. Won’t go back if we can avoid it.

We had a get together with friends to celebrate the holidays. From start to finish the food delicious. We had the calamari (was lightly fried and tender), then the half main lobster, mussels and rock shrimp with spaghetti in a light tomato sauce & pasta ribbons in Bolognese. It was all cooked to perfection and not over salted. We had the Zabaione Alla Gritti and Cannoli's for dessert. Love this restaurant and our waitress Rosa. Great service and staff !

Il Fornaio is one of my favorite restaurants in Pasadena. I shared my feedback about the waiter with the manager. He was going to speak to the waiter and he also offered my husband and I a dinner on our next visit.

I went here with my girlfriend for date night. The restaurant was mostly empty but then again it was already 9 pm. The bread was decent, a little over salted. My girlfriend got the linguine mare, I got one of the special steaks. The pasta was pretty ok, nice flavor of the seafood but my steak was completely raw around the bone, trust me I love rare. That's why I ordered it this way but it was undercooked. I had to wait 10 minutes for them to fix my steak. Then we ordered the almond cake and we're a little surprised to find that it was actually just a chocolate cake with very little almond flavor and with a salted caramel sauce that didn't fit the dish at all. Overall the food quality felt pretty poor. I'm a pastry cook for the resort at pelican hill and was very disappointed with most of the food and when they did nothing but fix the steak up a little bit I was really upset at this place.

Excellent food as always. Terrific fish dishes, superb calamari. We go there monthly and have never been disappointed. It can be noisy inside if you're too close to the bar or the kitchen, but otherwise, just great!

Il Fornaio Pasadena has long been a go to for a quality dinner out. The patio is especially lovely. This was our first time trying it for Thanksgiving and I think a new tradition is born. We all loved our food, as we always do there. But most surprising was the turkey dinner plate was PERFECT! We all ate every bite. $49 for 4 courses including super pumpkin pie was just right, and we all agreed it was as satisfying as eating at home --and so much more enjoyable as a day!

This is a great location in Pasadena Old Town. I would suggest earlier lunch dining (11:30 a.m. is my usual reservation time), because there aren't a lot of people and the noise level is low. There are a lot of great salad choices and the bread is great! After lunch, you are close to nice stores to go shopping.
