We had a bit of a challenge with our dinner. We had taken the train to the restaurant and we have a 2 year old in tow. It was fun! But when we realized that to go home we would only have a little over an hour for ordering, getting our food and eating, everything became rushed. Our waiter was ah-mazing!!! He was so accommodating, thoughtful and flexible. He alerted us to the time when we'd have to leave to get to the train station on time.
The food was excellent as always. I've been coming to Il Fornaio Palo Alto for years. It's the place my kids ask to go for their birthdays and special occasions. Always a favorite! Thank you!
Great diners with fri
Very good, will visit again in future. Always consistent good food, ambience, and service
Family get together!!
Very disappointing. Food has gone downhill. Menu has shrunk. Service was uneven. I won’t be back.
Very good experience, but not anymore the outstanding one that was used to be. The place has dropped baking and serving pastries at breakfast, I don't know why. Pastries were the significant plus. I don't think I'll come back again.
I am a Vegan, and went for one of the few vegan food items - the capellini pomodoro. It was very fresh and tasted great.
I am quite a regular at Il Fornaio, it is always a trustworthy fresh Italian food in a little old style place.
Excellent dinner and drinks, friendly waitstaff and very accommodating for small children.
The food was good - everyone seemed to enjoy, but the service and general attention was extremely poor. Felt that they could have done much better there, and it wasn't a busy night - they clearly could have put us in a better seating setup in the Courtyard rather than along the hallway. Very poor. Will not return.
We were here for Easter Brunch. The menu was great, food and service wonderful. Our only issue was that the Mimosa and Bloody Mary drinks were watered down. Not good!
Great for Easter Brunch!
Waiter messed up multiple parts of our order, brought things we didn't need, didn't bring things (like sugar for coffee) we did need. Brunch didn't arrive till an hour after we arrived. Either waiter or kitchen had misplaced our order. Manager had two pizzas and an appetizer brought to make it up to us (Though that plus our order was way too much food). We suspect the waiter will be looking for a job soon. We still will go there for special occasions.
We had a Sunday breakfast with friends that was a major disappointment. We four had eggs (2 each) , three sides of bacon, three lattes & 1 regular coffee. The toast was hard and cold, the eggs were very slightly warm & the bill was almost $100! The service was poor, pushy & non apologetic about the eggs or toast.
We normally meet for breakfast there 2 or 3 times a month,. BUT, we will not be going back.
The food and atmosphere was fun. Easy place to get a reservation and our server was really friendly and helpful.
This restaurant really has much too high an estimation of itself. The food is inconsistent. Mostly this relates to the Master chef in regards to menu offerings and quality of dishes. We have had many dining experiences at the location in San Diego and have never experienced undercooked food or stale bread. This restaurant has provided both on various occasions. The Sioux Chefs do am excellent job with what they are given. For the food and the value, there are better options available nearby.
Park on street or across at parking garage. Restaurant in hotel, so don't valet at $20. Great service. Great Italian food selection. Spumoni gelator (wow!) Great choices. Small, intimate booth or table. Might be expensive for lunch, but food and service definitely worth the price.
The cesar salad was OK, but the salmon special was mushy and flavorless.
Il Fornaio at Palo Alto is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner, it has great ambiance, outstanding food, excellent service and it is extremely well located. I highly recommend it.
One of the worst dining experiences I have had. Incompetence at every level. Service was terrible. Food was mediocre. I will not eat there again.
The Hosts were some what "Cold" and not too welcoming. They might need a class in being warm and nice to people :)
The food was good. They made a special dish at my request.
The service was a bit slow.
This restaurant is good. The service has always been spotty. Waiters and waitresses get the initial service done and then don’t bother to look at your table again. Trying to get their attention is a challenge. The restaurant wasn’t full and we weren’t in a hurry but trying to catch our waitress’s eye took a very long time.
Item on daily menu was already gone (this has happened 3 times in last 15 visits—a 20% disappointment rate); glass of wine on menu was gone (how can this happen?! wine doesn't age-out and it is unlikely that suddenly 5 guests ordered the same wine from the last bottle—more likely an inventory control issue); service was slow although crowd was more than usual. Very cosy except continual draft when front door opened on cold winter night. Bread quality, usually a superior option at Il Fornaio, was less than standard. Won't keep us from returning, but a disappointing dining evening.
I've eaten at this restaurant many times with good to very good results. Not this time. To begin with service was awful. Our waitress would disappear for long periods of time, leaving us searching for her. After our meal arrived, things got worse. My Branzino was overcooked, poorly filleted and had hardly any meat on it. My granddaughter's spaghetti was gooey and my wife's Cesar salad was lettuce with vinegar and oil dressing on it. The manager ignored us even though we were a group of 7 right on the main aisle. I've eaten here 15 to 20 times over the years, but never again!
it took 1 hr for the waiter to get back saying ran out of sauce for mac cheese, then another 10 min to said no alfredo sauce...
i was their for a birthday brunch. food was ok service was slow.
i was their for lunch the day before same waiter slow.
When you order a meal with wine, the wine should come before you have finished your meal. The service last night was horrible. We had to beg other servers to replenish our water and to notify our waiter to please bring our wine. He was useless....we felt we were at a self serve restaurant.
Our server was very personable. Great food and service.
Very nice atmosphere, loyal following, but resting on their laurels. Some of the food is terrific (risottos, soups, desserts, broccolini) but some is not (overcooked fish). Service is erratic.
Food a service were fine. There were some nice additions to the menu since my group was there in December. We were disappointed that there was no longer a large/small option on the pasta dishes.
I had the risotto (chicken, asparagus, truffles) which was small serving...as I wanted.
The restaurant looks clean and
Service was OK.
But most importantly, food was not that impressive.
Il Fornaio used to be great, but it is really on the downhill....
Dusty, old fashionned, they really need to change everything and renew it.
Food was ok.
Very disappointed. Seated outside in the cold and reseated in the corner. Waiter was great, managers poor.
Belated Valentines Day celebration. The food was wonderful an the service attentive and pleasant. We have always enjoyed dining a IllFornio.
We picked il fornaio because we wanted good food which could meet the diverse needs of our group and would accept a reservation. We did not want to wait in line! We found instead excellent salads, the best meatballs my 16 year old son says he ever had, table bread so fresh, flavorful and tender that I was hard pressed to only have a taste after the clamor arose about how good it was (and we had some French bread snobs in our group) great salmon, pizza, pasta and... the desserts! We are coming back soon! Seriously, I’m salivating as I type!
This was for Valentines Day +1. Great service. The servers are well trained. I had the rack of lamb and it was delish. My wife had the special ravioli with butternut squash and it also was very tasty. We will return!
Consistently pleasant and enjoyable.
We came here for Valentine's Day- the restaurant was fast and everything tasted really good! We even got a nice little bottle of olive oil to take home as a gift. Always a great place for special dinners- woudln't get the $19 calamari appetizer just on any night of the week.
