About Il Fornaio - Manhattan Beach
Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Il Fornaio means "the Baker" in Italian. This award-winning restaurant offers an authentic and unique Italian dining experience. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; housemade pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and housemade soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Il Fornaio - Manhattan Beach Ratings and Reviews
Great food and ambiance except the service was exceptionally poor. We had to wait for our drinks and every single course. Finally, we asked the waitress to please "not forget us!"
The worst ever - inexperienced wait staff. Usually excellent service but on Sundays they pare back and use novices.... Not good.
I have been to the restaurant many times in my l7 years in the south bay
I do find the food at a los angeles restaurant, Marias somewhat better and I believe
less expensive; but in this case I wanted a place close by and one that was quiet
and where parking was easy and I could get in and out ( with a traffic light) better
We have been doing large family gatherings at this Il Fornaio for some time now.
The restaurant is most accommodating. We did find at this visit some menu changes.
At lunch, in past, one was able to order half-size pasta entrees. This is no longer the case, and were told this is a company wide policy. We were quite disappointed by this.
The pasta portions were large - I guess the one bonus to this is that one goes home with leftovers, but it is nice to have the option of half-size portions.
Ismael, our waiter, was so extremely gracious and professional. When one has a large group it is difficult to make everyone happy, but so far this Il Fornaio has kept this group happy.
In addition, parking is ample and easy access to the restaurant
We love the regional menus, offered for two weeks every month. They rotate between the various areas in Italy and the menus are generally developed by a chef from or familiar with that particular area.
The wine list is quite good and the "evenings with a winemaker" type events often feature wines difficult to try or get in any other way.
A comfortable, tastefully decorated, soothing ambiance with very considerate seating arrangements that afford privacy of conversation in the middle of the restaurant. The wait staff was courteous and welcoming and prompt. The food was average in that the taste and preparation was more than adequate and the sauces flavorful, but not really special. The desserts were much appreciated, however; the tiramisu and the spumoni were very well presented and the tiramisu was very good and the texture and flavors very comforting with the spumoni combining the different flavors, including pistachio, in a very harmonious way... brought a smile to my face.
Great service! Great food. Definitely want to come back. My only criticism is that there were really loud kids screaming and running all over the restaurant. I would’ve appreciated someone telling them to settle down and be quiet. First time trying brunch. Will be back again for that and lunch.
We were seated very quickly by the big fire place. It was perfect because it was so cold. Service was super super fast. Bread came then, appetizers then drinks . Our meal came out so fast didn’t have time to have a drink or finish apps. The portion size is just right. We have the pennoni al vodka and the ravioli lucca. Both were tasty. The pennoni would be good with chicken or shrimp though.
Hubby and I decided to treat ourselves to our favorite old-neighborhood restaurant and go on a "date" since everybody else we wanted to visit in CA was busy. We got seated next to a party of 8 but they weren't really noisy. Our waitress was MORE than accommodating and let us customize our orders to our liking. I had salmon with broccolini, and baby Yukon gold potatoes. Hubby had Beef tenderloin with balsamic vinegar & green peppercorn sauce, broccolini, and baby Yukon Gold potatoes. We both enjoyed the dinner immensely. I had my leftovers the next night and they were still excellent. It was a very special treat for us.
I made reservations for 3 at 7:00 on Christmas Eve. We arrived at 6:50 and we were told there would be a wait. I checked back at 15 minute intervals and finally at 8:00 we gave up and sat in the bar for a 'special occasion' dinner. The hostesses were unhelpful liars.
Everything was great EXCEPT the 30 minute wait heightened by the very poor communication from the hostess desk. I have to say, I have never heard such a poorly trained hostess staff! When asked how long would the wait be, we just heard “ we are doing our best” and “a few minutes”. Both comments irritating when we were on time for our reservation.
I have eaten at this restaurant many times. Staff is very courteous. I am a vegan and I find a few things on the menu that I can eat. They are willing to take special requests such as "no cheese". The folks I dine with are not vegans, and they can always find something that appeals to them. On this particular time, a plate was dropped by the waiter next to where we were sitting. I was impressed with the speed at which it was cleaned up, and also with the team effort displayed by the staff to be sure that the interruption to me was minimal.
Il Fornaio is Italian only in the sense my real name is Italian. I'm not especially Italian in heritage or in experience. The same can be said about Il Fornaio. The food consists of pasta and 'specials'. The pasta dishes are passable, meaning they're fairly good, but in no way authentic. The appetizers fall into the same category. The specialties are bland entrees, utterly devoid of any pretense at ethnicity. The chicken dishes are decent. Do not order the beef tenderloin. Tender does not describe that loin. I want to point out that with the exception of the beef, the food here is alright. However, for the price you pay, the food ought to be excellent and it just isn't. The decor of the restaurant is very nice. It's rich without being tacky and it's got a comfortable feel. The service is good and and the waitstaff are attentive. As a nice, and very decent touch, the restaurant works to accommodate handicapped people. It's very accessible to people in wheelchairs. This could be a great restaurant with a change in menu and more skilled cooks.
We had the office Christmas party there and everyone had a great time! It started out slightly noisy (we had lunch at the end of the lunch rush) and by the time we were done, the noisy level had dropped enough to hear conversations from each end of the table (we had three tables pushed together). Everyone had something nice to say about their meal, they enjoyed the different meals from the Red Snapper and Salmon to the pasta and chicken.
Our waiter was Manuel who was very cordial. His "boss" served our food since Manuel was busy with other patrons. When Manuel arrived to help with serving, his boss started chastising him for not cleaning our table, which we thought it was very mean and rude to do in front of us. Then this boss served me the wrong order, which I had to send back with Manuel to correct. I ordered crab cakes and got ham/eggs something or other. The brunch meals were okay.
I've eaten here before and enjoyed the whole experience. That's why I chose to eat here again. This time the experience was not as enjoyable. Hard to believe the comments made by this boss would affect the meal, but it did.
Made reservations 3 weeks prior. Was seated in main dining room right on top of 3 other tables. Could hear everything at the other tables. Next time will definitely request one of the side rooms. They ran out of arugula & forgot that we were celebrating a BD even though the waiter was told at the table. The waiter did give us very good service though. Food & desserts were very good.
I'll Tornado is a quality restaurant and the ambiance is very pleasant. I had a ravioli dish with some sausage inside with veggies which was very delish. Crumpet had a small Filet steak with spinach and mashed potatoes which she tends to get each time we come here and Sarava had a chicken pasta dish which she loves. I had a glass of sweet Stella Rosa Muscato and ended it with a very smooth piece of Tiramisu dessert. This was another great dinner, you can always count on a very nice dining experience here!
This occasion was our annual Thanksgiving Day meal with immediate family starting at 1 pm. We've been coming to Il Fornaio for the past 4-5 years.
The cuisine was excellent as usual. There's a special Thanksgiving Day menu, and you can also order off the regular menu (only half-size pasta dishes were excluded). This works out well for us because some want the turkey dinner (which is really good) and others would opt for seafood (the special mixed grill was a big hit).
Seating for our party of 6 was a bit cramped in the back of the restaurant, next to a narrow passageway which shook my seat when servers passed by. I should have requested another table-- last year's was far superior in the large, quiet room in the front.
Service, while very friendly and courteous, was noticeably sluggish during the second half of the meal. The restaurant did not appear busy with many open seats (we specifically chose the time for this purpose), so perhaps staffing was inadequate for this holiday early afternoon.
Last year's meal was better overall. I think most of us nevertheless had a pretty good time this year.
