My wife and I have been coming here for years and my office has had annual holiday parties at Il Fornaio. The standard has always been outstanding. However, our last party experience was not good and last Saturday night’s dinner was awful! It appears to start with the management. We could not get the restaurant catering manager to return our calls to book the event, eventually requiring a personal visit to the restaurant.
Our meal experience involved exceptionally poor service. Despite an Open Table reservation, we were seated in the enclosed patio, which was practically devoid of guests and lacking in atmosphere. Our waitress had obviously not been trained. She served our food and immediately disappeared. She was not aware that it is customary to offer to grate Parmesan cheese over minestrone soup and to crack pepper from a mill if requested. She told us it was not the restaurant’s policy to do so. When we had her summoned, she served us from the end of a rectangular table, leaning over to grate cheese. The soup recipe has been changed to provide a mediocre version, full of potatoes and lacking in flavor. Portion sizes have been reduced and prices have increased. It seems like the restaurant is in decline and the management has downgraded and pared things down to remain profitable. They have lost a regular client and it appears that the management does not care.
Always a great place to go. The food, service and drinks are great. We will continue to go to lunch or dinner here.
Our reservation wasn’t even set up when we got there for one. Second, the guy that works there kept turning around and saying “stop touching that!” to everything in the restaurant! I couldn’t even believe it. THEN, our server was “new” she didn’t know her menu, then when our food arrived she never checked back on us or refilled our drinks. She proceeded to tell us that she’s doing her best! Wow! Worst birthday luncheon I have ever had! One star because the general manager was so apologetic and took care of our entire bill. I would give no stars if I could. I will never dine at this restaurant ever again!
Lydia has been our server previously and she does a terrific job. We love the changing menu and the more standard dishes. We will highly recommend your restaurant. Thank you.
Overall good, the ambience is good. Note: A few foods are a little salty.
Service was really lacking. Party of 7, we waited over 30 minutes for our drinks. Missing details for a pricey meal. Did not bring a wine chiller for white wine (even after requested), just left it on the table, never refilled water, server very unfamiliar with the menu. Food was good, but for the price, expect the service to match.
Always a wonderful time. Thank you Nelly for another wonderful Mother’s Day!
The restaurant was very accommodating on a busy day like Mother’s Day. Very good choice with good brunch options.
Great food, fantastic atmosphere and beautiful restaurant. My new favorite restaurant in the area.
We were seated and sat for 10 minutes before we were offered a cocktail. Just way too long to wait at 7:00pm. This always seems to be the problem at Il Fornaio. Food was a little bland!
Good place for all occasions!!!
I wish I would have remembered this place when I booked it!!! Ack, I forgot I had been here before. Note to self: DON’T GO BACK! Terrible, dried-out brick-hard bread basket. They wouldn’t add another seat to our huge table to make a party of 6 into 7, so I left one of my kids at home for Mother’s Day dinner. Seriously, we sat at a table made for 8 people, but when I called to see if we could make our 6 person reservation into 7 people, I was put on hold and made to believe every seat in the whole restaurant would be taken. Sigh! Our waiter made one dish of oil and vinegar for our huge oversized table, so we had to pass it around (spilling it on the tablecloth)... he must have realized his mistake later because he ended up making another dish AFTER all but one piece of bread was eaten. It was so confusing. The weird pacing and lack of awareness. I remembered when I sat down and looked at the menu that I had been here before and remembered how bad our experience was. This time was no different. So sad. So expensive. Gelatinous, stiff polenta under a tasteless meatball. I’m so tired of being disappointed.
We have always loved I'll Fornaio and dine there frequently. It was not a particular nice evening, and not busy, but our service was minimal. Had to ask for bread three times. The entrees were just ok. We were so disappointed I don't think we will return any time soon. Everything seemed very complacent
Yum! Very good service and excellent food.
It was average
Poor service at the hostess stand
Very slow table service
Excellent food and service. Edgar was a friendly and attentive waiter. He recommended a very good wine to us, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Food prep was top notch. Consistent high level execution brings us back often.
Flavor filled food... desserts are ridiculously good. Every bite of food is full of deliciousness.
There were 4 of us for dinner plus a 5 week old infant. This was a special dinner. Started with problems seating us because I made a reservation for 4 and added a comment that we would bring a small baby. This caused a big issue and a delay getting seated. Waitress was friendly but needed training. Wine dribbled down 2 people’s glasses which she never wiped off. After pouring the wine she never returned to fill them at any other point during the evening. One of my guests didn’t receive the soup she ordered. She was offered the soup late but declined and they took it off the bill. My meal was delivered and halfway through eating it I realized it wasn’t even the meal I ordered. Once again offered to give me the correct meal to take home. I declined and they removed from the bill. This was a very poor experience and sad because it was a very special occasion. Best part of the night was the baby sleeping through the whole dinner. With all the places to choose from for dinner this will not be a restaurant we will choose again.
For an exceptional evening focused on great service, excellent food and a Italian ambience, Il Fornaio is your spot.
Sal is awesome.
He brings out the best in the menu
Great restaurant for every occasion. The staff and the atmosphere is always beautiful and of course the food is sublime. Thank you for a great experience.
Service was awful, food was mediocre. While this was one of our old favorites, we will not come back again. The waiter abandoned us when we did not order food, only drinks, when we fist sat down. He had to be flagged down for everything and most of the time he didn't come at all. His menu recommendations were non-existent and/or useless. He is an experienced waiter who has been at the restaurant for quite a while, too. We had to retrieve the olive oil and balsamic for bread ourselves on two different occasions because he was nowhere to be found. He did not get our usual 20% tip and didn't deserve the 15% we gave him. The actual food was a mess, the work of a chef who apparently thinks that the more ingredients you have in there, the better, regardless of how they complement each other. Just throw it in and maybe they'll find something they like. It's too bad, we used to like the food there but its current lack of simplicity is matched only by its unpleasant taste. There are several other Italian restaurants within a mile of this one. We recommend trying any of them instead of this place. BTW, we have given a dozen positive OpenTable reviews over the past several years, including a number of Italian restaurants, such as the Barolo Grill. This is the first really bad review we've given in years/
The server was great. I believe his name was Jas.... Nice place to have lunch.
We came to the restaurant with family visiting from out of town. They are 100% Italian and from NYC so I was nervous that the food would not be up to par. However, the menu did not disappoint. I had the ravioli that tasted home made while my husband had the short ribs. The ambiance is elegant and romantic, much like many of the family run Italian restaurants I used to go to as a kid in NY. Not only did we enjoy our food but it provided me with a taste of another time.
This restaurant was absolutely stunning. It was beautiful. We went for prom dinner, 15 of us, and got taken care of immediately. The service was great as well. We had an amazing time and the food was good, too.
The restaurant was average. Nothing outstanding about it. The service was mediocre. There are much better choices in the area.
We dined at Il Fornaio for our 30th wedding anniversary and mentioned that in our Open Table reservation. I was surprised that nothing was mentioned by our server or the manager. In my reservation, I mentioned that we celebrated our 1st anniversary at Il Fornaio in San Fransisco 29 years earlier.
We had a wonderful meal at the restaurant but felt that the staff missed an opportunity to help us celebrate by acknowledging the occasion.
The food was great - we ordered the Sardegna wines and the Seabass entrée. Laura was our server and she was excellent. Made our special dinner out memorable. Thank you.
It’s unfortunate but I had high expectations having only dined during lunch. We were sat at the very back of the restaurant. Our waiter was so overwhelmed with a group of 10 women that I felt no genuine care for myself or my daughter. We had to request bread, no Parmesan was offered at the delivery of our meal, no refills, etc. I will not choose to dine again.
I loved that Italian opera songs were playing along with some Frank Sinatra. The restaurant is also very tastefully decorated especially the beautiful frescoes on all the walls. Almost like being in Italy! And the food was sumptuous. I had the spinach ravioli stuffed with sausage. Perfecto! Veal Parmesan was not on the menu but we asked and they made that for my husband. Also delicious. We cannot wait to go back. Wine on the patio!
Great place for a date night dinner. Service and food are amazing, did not feel rushed and we were able to just take our time and enjoy the experience. We will definitely save this as one of our go-to places for nice dinner.
No - it was so dumb. Happy Hour was at the bar - but not in the restaurant. So we ordered wine at the bar and brought it to the table apparently that was ok - dumb dumb dumb dumb. Food was ok - nothing exceptional - pasta for $24.00 get serious.......BUT the server was excellent. He did a wonderful job.
Would we go back - probably not - dumb, dumb, dumb dumb.
The service was outstanding. The two servers were absolutely amazing. I hope i can get them both tomorrow on 4/9/19 for my other big gathering. They were kind, professional and kept up with big group so well. The food was so good. Great crew all around.
Il Fornaio seems to be "cutting back" on service, cost issues. Nobody buses the table, the waiter was completing these tasks on occasion, and the bread has taken a downturn.
Dissapointed overall. I expected much better food and experience especially for the price. Unfortunately you're better off with a chain like Brio or Maggiano's.
Celebrated 4 birthdays.
Debra was amazing. Extremely attentive and knowledgeable. Definitely made our anniversary that much more special.
Excellent food and excellent service! I think your wine prices are a little steep.
I’ll Fornaio is a favorite go-to for me. It is very consistent and always has excellent service! The staff is very professional and friendly.
