About Il Fornaio - Del Mar
Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; house made pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and house made soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2007.

Il Fornaio - Del Mar Ratings and Reviews
Service was extremely slow. We were there over 2 hours. Managment blamed the server. Disappointed that they didn’t take their own accountability in understaffing. If they’d been honest in understaffing, we might’ve this have been ok. Just don’t go on a busy night. Food is good.
Disappointing. My husband and I ate here ~3 years ago for Thanksgiving and enjoyed the food and the location. This year, it was a big disappointment. The greeter was friendly and we were seated right away, but our waiter barely said 3 words to us. The food was cold and bland. We sent the first course (butternut squash soup) back as it was cold and tasteless, and they returned with cold canned minestrone soup. The food did not improve with each successive course. The following day, my husband called and talked to the manager. He apologized and promise to call us back the following day - of which he never did.
This was a wonderful choice for a RARE restaurant Thanksgiving-
Stressless & delicious.
Even left with a generous "doggy" bag!
This year family circumstances necessitated a restaurant meal--
Next year we will choose it!
(Just hoping they'll set alittle dark meat aside for my plate next year :)
"Thanksgiving Dinner" has become a yearly family gathering at Il Fornaio. This is the fourth year that my family and I have celebrated Thanksgiving dinner. This restaurant is also the "go to" restaurant that we have been going to for at least 10 years and we're never disappointed!! Great food, wonderful service, couldn't ask for more.
This is our go-to place in Del Mar. The seafood pasta is always well-cooked and delicious. The pizza, however, was just ok. Service this time was a little slow. We usually enjoy our drinks and wait a bit to order since the service is so fast. This time we waited longer to be served even though the restaurant was not crowded. Perhaps the crowded outdoor bar scene was the cause. We actually started with drinks outside then moved in. That was fun!
Despite having a reservation, we had to wait , standing, in crowded area for about ten minutes, both before and after being acknowledged by the hostess staff.
We were seated at a booth in front of the kitchen, where kitchen and wait staff were very active. The noise from the kitchen was overpowering and made conversation between myself and the companion at my table very difficult. For a restaurant to place diners in that entire area, is unacceptable.
It made what was to be a lovely birthday gift for my companion, into a situation for which I had to apologize.
It was for a birthday. Let me say my family and I always enjoy our time here. We have never been disappointed. This is on the top of our list always for a great place for any occasion. Thanks so very much to the staff for making every single visit a great one.

The food was fine. Actually, the caprese salad (although overpriced) was very good. The service was not good at all. The waiter hardly came to the table and the restaurant was not busy. I ordered an espresso and it literally came 1/4 full. I sent it back and was told by the waiter that the bartender said that was how they served it. Although he did bring me another that was full. I didn't argue but even I know the tiny espresso cups are served full.
We were there for restaurant week specifically. The carpaccio, linguini with meatballs and veal were excellent. The service was just passable. We were unattended for extended periods of time and our server seemed unfamiliar with the menu. The noise from the bus station was excessive and distracting.
Our meal was delicious, but we were disappointed that the most beautiful and desirable part of the restaurant, on a Friday night, was closed for a private party. The ocean view, which is the best part of the experience, was completely inaccessible. I would have liked to have know that before making my on-line reservation.
My brother Joe Ventura used to eat here daily years ago, and he recommended that we eat here.
We are Italian and cook daily and live in Miami, so you would have thought that the quality of our seafood would be comparable. The truth is that the seafood at Il Fornaio--shrimp, clams, mussels--was as fresh as it is in Italy. It was the best dining experience in Italian cuisine we have ever had at a restaurant.
I suspect I was put in the worst table in the restaurant because I am not white. I ordered the 3-course tasting menu and the last course took over 20-min after the second course. This should have been followed up by the wait staff. That happened when a quarter of the dinners in the restaurant already finished and left. So that was not their busiest time.
