About Il Fornaio - Del Mar
Step inside Il Fornaio and take a culinary journey through Italy. Early mornings bring rustic, crisp crusted bread hot from the oven accompanied by the scent of fresh brewed espresso. During lunch and dinner hours, pastas and flavorful sauces simmer while meats and vegetables roast over hot coals. Bottles of wine from small, regional wineries are uncorked to complement the dishes, which have been crafted in the custom of Italy's chefs, bakers and homemakers. Specialties include wood-fired rotisserie and grilled meats, poultry and game; house made pastas; pizzas from an oak wood burning oven; fresh salads and house made soups; a wide variety of desserts; and fresh baked bread made daily from scratch. Winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence 2007.

Il Fornaio - Del Mar Ratings and Reviews
Italian cuisine has hundreds of different dishes from the meny regions of Italy. I was surprised that they only had about 6-8 pasta dishes. in the menú. The food was good but scarce, at lest the dish I ordered. I had the butternut squash ravioli: all 5 of them. My wife’s was a bit better: linguini with frutti de mare. The ambiance is very nice but don’t come hungry. Or fill up in the wonderful bread with olive oil.
We love the views from this place. The service and ambiance are second to none. Our wine was reasonably priced and very good. We split the Pollo alla Cacciatorri. It's sauce was pale and lacked flavor. Also, the chicken was chewy. The fennel salad was delightful. Full of flavor and dressed perfectly. We would go back yet again but, order a different entree.
Excellent Italian food, well prepared and served well. I have been to this restaurant a couple of times and have not been disappointed. Real Italian food in a pleasant atmosphere. Make sure that the waiter stamps your parking ticket if you park in the restaurant building. Our waiter took our ticket but it wasn't stamped when we got to the gate so we had to pay extra for the parking.
I have been going to Il Fornaio for over 20 years. I usually go to the one in Coronado but the people we were taking to dinner for their birthdays live in Del Mar. Now I don't know if it is the difference between the 2 restaurants or not but the quality and the value and the noise was horrible. We have always gone for the Festa Regionale and enjoyed the tasting menu. Not only was that not available anymore but the prices seem to have skyrocketed. It seems like we are living in a time where we pay more for less but I thought Il Fornaio was above that. We were taking my sister and brother in law to dinner for their birthdays and they are Italian food aficionados. They spend months in Italia every year and their favorite restaurant is Positano in Solana Beach which is a small, authentic, family owned establishment. Il Fornaio used to be able to stand up to those kinds of restaurants. So I thought I'd take them to one of my favorite places. I was embarrassed! I spent a great deal of money (over $500.00) and the meal and the venue was a total disappointment. I think the era of Il Fornaio for me and my husband is over. It has been a favorite for many of my friends but I think I will have to advise them to stay away also. It Is Unfortunate. It was one of the best restaurants in SD in my opinion but no more. Go to Positano! Or Buona Forchetta in South Park or Liberty Station. You'll be happier.
Enjoyed Italian dinner with friends. Liked menu choices and wine list. Will likely return again. Do think that request for review is much too specific about the number of words. Would like to participate in review, but not if this requirement is not lifted in the future.
This was our first time here, and we went for the San Diego Restaurant Week specials. The food was very good. Fresh baked bread. We both had the Salmon, which chicken pasta side dish. The Salmon was great. Desert was a bread pudding with apples and raisons, topped with ice cream and chocolate sauce. We will be coming back again to try some of the other options.
Went there for late lunch on Sunday few people there and outside seating was available but the view is okay given the fact it is Old Delmar. It was chilly and they had the heater on. Nothing exceptional but could have just been the time. They do validate parking which is a plus.
Love to have business lunches at Il Fornaio. Relaxed atmosphere, ocean view, delicious Italian food. Only thing is that sometimes the waiters disappear and you sit there for long periods of time with dirty plates or waiting for the check. Not every time, but often enough to mention. Not going to stop me for going there! I love their daily seafood specials too.
Our family has been to this location several times.
This time, we made our reservation and were seated promptly. Hot bread and water were served right away.
Water refills occurred. A refill of olive oil for the bread occurred.
A server never showed up.
We left after 25 minutes of sitting. We went to a neighboring restaurant - where we were taken care of very well.
Il Fornaio Del Mar was a perfect choice for us for New Year’s Eve. It is one of my all time favorites and I was delighted with their regular menu at regular pricing so that each of the four of us had a full range of choices. Our very professional yet convivial server was wonderful, the food marvelous as always and we enjoyed with our dear friends a decades long tradition of sharing the holidays day.
Lovely setting and very good service. Just not the place for brunch. Breakfast item menus limited, eggs dishes not especially well prepared. Limited number of salads and no sandwiches or paninis to round out the menu. Pizza for brunch? I don't think so. Would try sometime for dinner.
I always enjoy Il Fornaio. I order pasta with veggies and stay vegan. And I take part of a Caesar salad with dressing on the side, and give the rest of the salad and dressing to the person I am dining with.
Last night was especially good. They gave a small loaf of bread to me, just before I left. Nice touch!
You can't go wrong at Il Fornaio. Save your money and go!
Healthy Happy Eating,
Service was extremely slow. We were there over 2 hours. Managment blamed the server. Disappointed that they didn’t take their own accountability in understaffing. If they’d been honest in understaffing, we might’ve this have been ok. Just don’t go on a busy night. Food is good.
Disappointing. My husband and I ate here ~3 years ago for Thanksgiving and enjoyed the food and the location. This year, it was a big disappointment. The greeter was friendly and we were seated right away, but our waiter barely said 3 words to us. The food was cold and bland. We sent the first course (butternut squash soup) back as it was cold and tasteless, and they returned with cold canned minestrone soup. The food did not improve with each successive course. The following day, my husband called and talked to the manager. He apologized and promise to call us back the following day - of which he never did.
This was a wonderful choice for a RARE restaurant Thanksgiving-
Stressless & delicious.
Even left with a generous "doggy" bag!
This year family circumstances necessitated a restaurant meal--
Next year we will choose it!
(Just hoping they'll set alittle dark meat aside for my plate next year :)
