Il Fornaio - Coronado Ratings and Reviews
We have visited this location many times & this visit was a disappointment! I'm sorry to say, we have always been Il Fornaio fans. We have been to many of their restaurants nation wide... Del Mar, Reston, VA, Las Vegas, just to name a few) However, I had requested a window/view table, that was not even mentioned at check in or honored! We were seated in a booth near the salad prep area (very busy location and loud). Our server was not attentive, never introduced himself, didn't make time for our table of 4 (reviewing dinner specials, refills of drinks/cocktails, recommending a starter salad or soup, apps or dessert), the restaurant was busy, but that is no excuse! We had a dirty bread plate at our table when seated, no fork at one place setting, and was served red wine with a dirty glass...had to ask for another! The server was polite but rushed...doesn't make for a relaxing meal. FOOD: was marginal at best! Ordered a chicken dish (Petto Di Pollo Al Peperoncino) on the dinner menu, spicy, was okay (served with sautéed spinach & roasted potato), also ordered at our table Risotto Special and a Ravioli Special, both were just okay! Due to our seating location, I felt like food was being "slapped together"...like we say at our house... "not a lot of Love given to prep"! I will have to say...we will not be returning, there are other restaurants on Coronado/San Diego that we know have better service and take pride in meal prep & quality that we are excited to visit!
I recently took my girlfriend out on a date night and reserved a table for a Friday night. The night was busy(weekends), but ambiance inside the restaurant is great. Pretty view of the SD skyline. Food was good, server was very nice, just slow and could be more attentive, i understand i work in restaurant as well, just communication.
Overall nice spot would recommend
We were there for NYE. Wait staff was great however not aware dessert course was included in price fixed meal. They checked with management on our request and confirmed. Also 2nd course came out very premature, and they did take it back. All food was good as we love il Fornaio. Lots of food for the $65. We all didn’t need so much. Would like to see a smaller food option available for price fix menus on special holidays. And not until day of dinner did we learn we had to depart at 10ish before NYE special celebration going on. We were not aware. Love If Fornaio and tough evening to be open. Overall very pleasant experience and staff were all wonderful.
New Year's Eve, busy restaurant, wasnt expecting anything particularly out of the ordinary. BUT I was wrong- wonderful wait staff, great food, great wine by the glass selections. Light a tasty fried calamari, a wonderful and innovative caprese salad. The seabass entree was delicate and delicious- best I've had in a while, pasta dish was well flavored. Desserts and coffee excellent. A really enjoyable meal and evening
We had a lovely New Year’s Eve dinner. Wonderful food, competent, fun waitress. A little TOO much food, but we all took boxes home and enjoyed them. The desserts, too, were unbelievable. We were seated at a window table which I requested and the view of the skyline was incredible. I will definitely go back!
Il Fornaio never disappoints. Beautiful atmosphere & views, great food, attentive service!
One of our long-time favorite places for a casual dinner or lunch with the family, romantic dinner with the husband, or meeting my girlfriends for drinks and apps! Mangia!!
Una experiencia muy agradable a pesar de ser 24 de diciembre, gran disposición y esmero de meseros... no así las hostess (nada cordiales al llegar y sin ningún comentario o despedida al salir), un carpaccio desangelado pero excelente salmón y filete..!
Three stars for service requires some explanation. Got seated at a great table (by the window with super view of downtown San Diego as the sun was setting). No servers for several minutes, one waiter (Aden) saw us trying to get someone's attention and came over to tell us it was not his table but pointed out the correct person and said he would alert her. We could see she seemed busy but also doing a lot of chit-chat with customers she was already serving. Eventually Aden returned and said he would take care of us, he did and he was excellent! Whole episode was strange but worked out just fine.
Food is very good and the view across the bay at sunset should not be missed. A plus was the Holiday lighting on the downtown waterfront.
Our server, Tony was wonderfully friendly and helpful. The older gentleman (I'm sorry I did not get his name) who kept our our water glasses full and made sure we were alright was dear. The food was delicious and the view out the floor to ceiling windows is gorgeous. We got to see downtown San Diego at its finest. One of my sons ordered a meal that included lobster, but found that lobster is way more work than it's worth, but that was a learning experience for us, no reflection on the restaurant. The desserts recommended proved to be a treat (tiramisu and spumoni ice cream shared among the five of us). The only negative I would give is that the spinach served as a side dish was rather boring (and I like spinach). The rest of the meals were great. Thank you for this lovely place and a precious night for my family.
We have celebrated the holidays with the same friends here for years with great memories. Yesterday was one disaster after another--the waiter spilled a drink down 2 of our backs--OK,
not on purpose, cleaned things up and brought only one of us another drink. But it didn't end,
3 of us ordered Eggs Benedict, one with yolk hard, 2 over-easy--they all came with the yolk hard. One of us had coffee, she had to ask for a refill twice before she got it and when the girl brought it the lid fell off the pot, coffee all over the tablecloth. One ordered French Toast, one of the pieces was burned on the bottom. The service was HORRIBLE--and by way of apology they did not charge for the drink they spilled.
Dining while watching the lights of San Diego twinkle on the harbor waters is an experience that never grows old. Il Fornaio, Coronado, is the perfect location for a spectacular evening enjoying the wonderful flavors of Italy and enjoying the flush of a wonderful bottle of wine.
