Il Fornaio significa "el panadero" en italiano. This was our first visit to this location, but have eaten at the Santa Clara restaurant several times. The decor here was lovely, and some of the food ordered was good, but not nearly as great as the other location. The real disappointment was the service, from the start we were not greeted until waiting for a while. Server (not sure of his name) seemed distracted and focused on a larger group behind us. We Waited a long time for our food, and it came out lukewarm. My roasted potatoes were not fully cooked inside. We asked to have our wine decanted, but server never came back to pour our wine or ask how it was. Given the other choices in Carmel, we will not be returning. Maybe it was an off night, but we were disappointed.

Ambience on the dog-friendly patio was nothing special, which we did not expect. The food was OK…, calamari OK, pizza was average. Nothing like the internet pics. It was under done. Crust was rubbery. Very disappointing.

I had one of the specials which was the Chicken Parmigiana. It was the best I have ever had. I chose to not have a salad after my waiter said that the main course was a lot of food. So I had the outstanding bread and the chicken p. Delicious sauce, chicken and pasta. This was the third time I have eaten at Il Fornaio and I won't hesitate to go back. Also excellent service, wine selections and ambience with a table on the patio overlooking Carmel Bay.

Been to this Il Fornaio a few times and it was always very reliable with a good busy atmosphere. Last night the place was half empty, the food was fine but close to Olive Garden than a traditional Italian Trattoria. I won’t be going back.

My husband and I were just visiting Carmel celebrating our 10-year wedding anniversary, and this place was so delicious. We had breakfast, morning coffee, and dinner there on 3 different days. Our dinner server Kathy was so nice and attentive. Highly recommend this restaurant!
