Il Fornaio - Burlingame Ratings and Reviews
What a disappointment. We haven't been in a few years but always experienced a good meal in the past and considered it reliable. Everything has gone downhill. Three of us went and each person had sub par food and drink.
To start the tonic water was flat and my wife's drink had to be sent back. We had beef carapace and a beet salad to start. Both had a ton of shaved cheese on them. Our dinner entrees were all bad. My son had the smallest portion of veal scallopini I have ever seen. It was drowned in sauce and tough I ordered venison which was chewy and flavorless. I did not think it possible to eliminate flavor from venison but they did it. The sauce was cold as if the stew preparation had been microwaved. There was a teaspoon splash of cold berry sauce on the side which was flavorful but not nearly enough to help out the meat. The polenta tasted like water. My wife had pasta which had to be salted and peppered Everything lacked seasoning. We ordered chocolate hazelnut cake to share for dessert. It was so dry we didn't finish it. Coffee was burnt.
The server was nice and the restaurant was full but not busy. It was a Sunday night. Overall we will not go back. Our meal was $200 and it was like cafeteria quality.
The staff here was awesome last week when we came in with my friend to celebrate him having been to 100 countries. Also, we came in with my landlord who brought his lifesize doll, and nobody was rude to us. This was his first time taking her out, and it was great since I'd been worrying all day that there may be hiccups.
The food is excellent as always. They carry my favorite varietal by the glass, so had to have that.
I used to go to Il Fornaio all the time because the quality of the food was great. My chicken was tough, the vegetables must have been cooked in rancid oil because they tasted awful, and the potatoes were so so. I cannot believe the amount of business the restaurant does with the food they serve. Kudos to them for charging a lot of money for terrible food and get away with it.
Have been here many times over the years! It is always consistent.. the ambiance is special. The structure of the actual building is unique and creates a beautiful setting. Have enjoyed it every time I have been here! Service was great tonight and food as usual great. Thanks you for such a great restaurant. It was very busy even on a Wednesday night .. very few tables open. speaks for the popularity! A friend was visiting from out of state and she loved the experience as well.
We dine often and like the atmosphere, menu, food is tasty and service is good. I'd give more stars for food but the kitchen has a bad habit of plating the entree sides first, so those get cold while waiting for the main item or for all the orders to be ready. Chefs (and servers) need to be on top of their game and ensure every meal is served hot - it's simply the basics of dining.
Food was fine, service fine, except when it came to the bill. I was charged a different table’s bill and would had been very hard to catch if I didn’t pay attention to the table number. Check your bill AND the signature statement. Wasn’t busy as we were first for lunch, so little excuse for the mixup. Hard to find waiter afterwards to fix.
An isolated incident as I have always had great food and service at this place. Waitress was less than thrilled to be at work and food was blah. Caesar salad drenched in powdery Parmesan cheese and pizza was cold and undercooked. . I will go back because again this place is usually a hit.
Veggies with meal over cooked recooked cold and never should have been plated. Seriously
This is the go to place for my sister and family members for many, many years. This visit my sister and I met for lunch. Which we frequently do. Made reservations for1:30pm after the rush.
The restaurant was somewhat busy when we arrived they winded down we each ordered one of our favorites grilled salmon with vegetables. I asked for mine without potatoes- more veggies. Excellent execution by Griscella. Starter salads. Excellent.
MaÍn course. The salmon was perfect but the veggies on both plates cold over cooked recooked. Really bad. To Griscellas credit she proved a fresh plate of green beans. Like yes bright green color was there on the plate. No comparison. Not sure what the kitchen was thinking
The prices have gone up the wait staff service was excellent. The kitchen was off. Expect more
I liked the food here, but the costs are pretentious! I bought a bowl of Capellini and meatballs for almost $20! Mind you, not a big Olive Garden bowl, but a large bowl with a regular amount of pasta and maybe 4 small meatballs in it! I will have a hard time visiting this place for dinner anytime soon when I can go to a local restaurant and spend much less for the same quality of food. We went for lunch, so the prices were less, but I was accidentally given the dinner menu, holy crap!!!!
I booked Il Fornaio Burlingame for a birthday brunch which also coincided with Christmas Eve. I intentionally booked earlier in the service to avoid any crowds that we might encounter. Knowing that it was a holiday we arrived on time. Our party was 6 and we brought a 7 which they graciously accommodated (although it was a round table with plenty of room so it was an easy accommodation) and the pleasant experience stopped there. Our entire brunch lasted two hours. While the restaurant was less than 25% full when we started and maybe 50% full when we finished, the only attentive service received was by the staff refilling our water glasses. We were not served our meal until over one hour into our time there (at least 45 min after ordering). The food was cold. For everyone. And after we were served - we never saw our server again. It took over 20 min to get our bill. And of course - a mandatory automatic gratuity due to the party size. To say this was a disappointment would be a great understatement. The restaurant wasn’t full, only had 1 other large party, and had many members of the wait staff. We have dined with Il Fornaio many times before in various locations and never with an experience like this. It was unfortunate both for the holiday and the celebration our family was attempting to have. I don’t think we will be able to return and will find other locations.
Food was very average. I ordered veal al limone—and it tasted like roast beef, not veal . It was tough and tasteless. The beet salad was drenched in dressing. Service was ok-but clearly this restaurant is very average compared to the many better choices of Italian food in the bay area . It’s living off its reputation in the past which was deserved-but no more. Bar is nice and I liked the lighting .
The food was excellent, but the dining room was excessively noisy for an afternoon lunch. My 96 year old father could not carry on a conversation with my daughter and me since he could not hear what we said (this does not happen at home). Disabled patrons should be warned that there is no handicapped parking nearby (and non-handicapped people should be aware that you'll be extremely lucky to get street or public parking of any kind), but a good option is to pay the $12 fee for valet parking at the door to the restaurant.
ever since i’m trying to book with open table, the table i’m getting seems to be the worst in the restaurant. next to a do-not-know-what’s-it-called-station with tools, condiments, extra silverware, trash, and much more, the busiest waiter space, it’s difficult to stay with your table and not be distracted by these disturbances. also, not seeing your host for way too long when you would like to ask or order more, finally letting you place the order, delivering what you ordered when you are done. the restaurant is loud and noisy, unable to enjoy a conversation at the table without yelling. staff, when breaking a glass at before mentioned station, doesn’t even bother apologizing when what seemed to be milk spilled all over our shoes. lastly, the price of the food does not justify the quality, nothing special, just plain every day fare, or anything extra delicious or unique to that place.
italian style family dining — i don’t think so!!!
Went here for a Sunday breakfast/brunch meeting with traveling business associates because of the close proximity to the SF Airport. The menu was limited, with little to no options for vegetarians or NON-pork eaters. The service was slow and the food was cold by the time it was served. Thank goodness the cocktails were abundant, saved the day.
