Il Canale Ratings and Reviews
Visiting Georgetown. We were seated between a group of about 15 teenage girls. We couldn’t even have a conversation with each other. We were in and out within 30 minutes. Disappointed we couldn’t enjoy a nice Saturday night and needless to say our date was ruined.
Setting was great, warm evening outside. Food was mediocre. Caprese salad had flavorless tomatoes, and way overpriced. Pizza nothing to write home about. Mushroom chicken was thrown together with what tasted like soup as a sauce. Frozen fries were okay.
Just not what I expected for $90 (including a few drinks). Probably won’t go back
Splendid was the evening at Canale. I had a very authentic and tasty lentil soup to start. My date and I shared the tomato caprese. Two glasses of Sangiovese red wine prior to two fantastic entrees. I had the lobster stuffed ravioli and my date fettucine pasta in a light red sauce seasoned with mussels, baby clams and shrimp. Dessert was an Italian favorite cannoli and espresso. Bruno the waiter made it all happen and was knowledgeable, courteous and genuine Italian.
Il Canale was delicious and wonderful as usual. Our waitress was extremely sweet and nice. This is the best pizza in DC and better than some pizza I've had in Italy. It's great casual Italian food, sophisticated without being stuffy. My only caveat is that it's a little pricey, but that's DC for you.
Dinner with friends. We ordered Gnocchi, lasagna and connelloni, and a caprese appetizer. Everything was terrific. There was a mix up with the appetizer, but they corrected it and took it off the check. Really an excellent spot for Italian and their pizza is some of the best.
EXCELLENT service. Great outdoor dining and welcoming indoor dining experience. The pizza with the thinly shaved dried beef on it was to die for. We felt very welcomed here and the service was fantastic. Really nice location - a little private but still some good people watching.
We really like Il Canale, but last Friday was busier than normal. They seem to be booking very large parties and that affects their ability to seat regular reservations or plan accordingly. We were given a table on the 2nd floor which it is my least favorite location --- SO LOUD and unpleasant. The waitress was terrific but I could tell that the kitchen was behind and they just keep up. Not my favorite visit.
The restaurant didn’t honor the time of our reservation. We arrived at the time we reserved, 8:15, waited 30 minutes, and eventually ended up eating the bar. We never sat at a table - I don’t know why this restaurant accepts reservations in OpenTable. The couple next to us at the bar had a similar experience.
The restaurant was very busy. We had a reservation for 8:30 and didn’t get seated until 8:40. In my opinion people who have reservations should sit first before walk-ins and that’s what happened to me I believe. A little difficult to understand the staff due to the noise and accents. The food came out fast. They forgot the grilled chicken on my salad and had to take it back. The waitress caught it before the plate hit the table and took it back right away. The bar staff is very nice.
Reservation system is actually a joke. You come in and say you have a reservation and they put your name on a list...with all of the walk in people. And then you stand there waiting in a giant crowd of people for 15-20 minutes despite 1)being on time for your reservation and 2)a number of empty tables in the dining area. The food is very mediocre and too expensive for the poor quality. Would not return.
Il Canale is our neighborhood "go to" family restaurant in Georgetown. The food is always consistently good and there are gluten free pasta and pizza options which is important to a few of our family members. The service is always friendly and good. Il Canale offers value for the price.
The restaurant does a very brisk business, and certainly isn't lacking for patrons. However the experience my wife and I had there wasn't good. We ordered a salad to share, which was apparently forgotten by the busy waiter until I asked about it after the arrival of my pizza. As is my custom I asked for the pizza to be "crisp." It was served with ample toppings, but very wet . It could't be picked up. A fork needed to be used. My wife ordered what she said was a "forgettable lasagna."
We loved both of our pizzas~ spicy salami and margarita! We had calamari for our appetizer I thought the sauce was a little blend. Service was exceptional ~ my server was refilling my water faster then I realized I had an empty glass. I also appreciated manager checked in to see how we were doing.
Pizza was very good. Seafood pasta was also good (hand made pasta was excellent) but portion was medium size (i.e. was left still a bit hungry at the end). Service was excellent - food came out quickly despite busy time and we were a group of 8. Good experience.
This was our first date together. I made our reservation on the app and then called ahead to make sure my special request could be honored. It was! When we arrived we were greeted with a smile and taken to our out of the way table where we could continue talking and get to enjoy our dinner. It did get a little noisy but that could be expected for a Saturday night. Service was awesome and our waiter was so attentive. Will definitely be returning for future dates and or outings.
Went with a couple who recommended Il Canale. Food was excellent, especially spaghetti carbonara and meat lovers pizza. Service was friendly and prompt. Felt a little rushed at outset, but when our very nice server realized our table would not turn over instantly, she left us alone. Would definitely go back.
My wife and I came here for a date. We always love going to a particular pizza place in NYC because they have amazing pizza and it just so happens they have gluten-free options. Well, we no longer need to go to NYC to have a rare date night. Il Canale is now it. We had our own private seating (maybe just a fluke for the day/time we went)...literally an entire room for ourselves. Our waiter was knowledgeable and friendly. Most importantly he actually loved, and knew intimately, the food he was telling us about. Well, okay maybe not most importantly because most importantly the food was superb. We will definitely be coming back here for years to come.
We were seated towards the back and it felt like the waitress was rushing us. We sat down, within 30 seconds she came and asked if we were ready to order. Then when we ordered appetizers, after 5 mins she asked if we were done. She did this with our main course as well. We were in by 5:45 since we got there early and out by 6:15 PM. One of the worst date locations if you want to take your time with your significant other.
