Host was great. Pizza phenom
We booked through OT and the restaurant dis not honor our reservation time. Had to wait 40 minutes to be seated. Host asked the annoying question of “are you all here?” And promised to sit us in 5 to 10 min. He had no control over sitting orders. Another guy was in charged of it and seemed to care little for the people with reservations. Not a good experience.
The night, however, was saved by our server, Aldo, short for Romualdo, a very attentive and courteous person, who made everything possible for us to feel welcomed and comfortable.
The food was good, and worthwhile.
So, if you come to Il Canale, be ready for a long wait even if you have a reservation.
There are three other Italian restaurants on the same block, so need to wait like we did.
We do love this restaurant, but it is incredibly noisy! Very chaotic, but they do their best to seat you...excellent food!
Really good Italian food with many options including gluten free pasta and pizza. The decor was more casual than I thought it should be. It was more pizza parlor than romantic italian. But overall it was terrific.
Birthday and Valentine’s Day
Really good food! Enjoyed it.
Food was amazing as always and they did a good job getting us seated even though it was Valentine’s Day. Service was prompt and friendly as well. The only thing I would change is that the table was very very wobbly and a bit of our wine spilled because of it. I also wasn’t sure how I felt about the paper placemats. The dishes kept getting stuck to them. Overall, the pasta and calamari were very tasty as were the bottle of wine and cannolis. Will definitely be coming back for some pizza.
Very intimate place! We got there a little early but was seated right away! The food was super fresh and tasted authentic from when I lived in Italy as a child! Everything was flavorful, our waitress was absolutely wonderful.
The food is delicious and the wine selection is excellent! We loved seeing the beautifully painted Fiat 600!
They serve what is essentially bologna pizza. Salad was "meh." Croquettes were dry. Restaurant was overbooked when we arrived. Service was good, but overall not sure how this place is so busy.
One of the best pizzas in D.C. Perfect crust, excellent topping level, gooey and delicious. Plus they have bresaola, which is my indication of an excellent Italian place! Good service although a bit slow at times. Gets really loud after 7 pm, so if you want quiet go before then. Will definitely go back again in a heartbeat!
Gnocchi was light and yummy! Pizza crust was amazing!
Best Italian restaurant in DC! Great pizza and friendly service.
My favorite place in Georgetown. Awesome as always.
Best authentic Italian pizza I have eaten in the states, after living in Italy for 4 years.
Amazing food for such a good price! A must try! And don’t say no to the table bread, it was delicious! Also, check in on Yelp and you’ll get a free cannoli!
Great food, great wine, great atmosphere. There’s a reason this place is packed with people!
This place is fantastic and has a great authentic vibe! Fresh, tasty, real ingredients and the best part is that they have gluten-free pizza and pasta!! I was pleasantly surprised at how big the gluten-free pizza was - it is rare that they are the same size as the regular pizzas. The service was kind and knowledgeable. My boyfriend and I agree this was the best pizza we have had in DC. We will definitely be back!
The food was amazing! Authentic Italian food.
Truly authentic Italian food. Amazing pizza and don't get too full - dessert was amazing too! we will be back!
We were unfortunately disappointed with Il Canale on Saturday night. Our reservation was for 8:15pm - as was far too many other people that were crowded in the forefront of the restaurant. The host was telling everyone that walked up to his stand it would only be "just a few minutes" for a table whether they had a reservation or not. We were actually sat a little after 9pm and were also extremely disappointed in both the pizza, whose toppings were all thrown in the middle of the soggy pie, as well as the lackluster Caeser salad which only consisted of lettuce and the slightest coating of dressing. Throw in two glasses of truly overpriced wine and this was a $75 dinner that wasn't worth more than a visit to one of the chain restaurants that serve a similar line up. We've heard good things from a couple that had been a few years back. That couple accompanied us on Saturday night and will also not likely be back. Thanks for asking our opinion!
My only issue is that they do not keep their reservations well. Every time we go, we make a reservation, and we still have to wait.
Had a great experience for my first time at Il Canale! After moving from NYC it’s been hard to find great pizza... but this spot really does it right. I couldn’t believe how fast the pizzas came out too! Good stuff - will definitely be back.
Business lunch. Service excellent. Food great. Very good value
Aldo was our top notch server again. This guy is always on time with everything. He makes us feel like we are back in Roma again. If possible ask for him or his section. You can thank me later.
PS: Thanks for the free cannoli yelp!!
Recommend any pizza and lasagna. Lobster ravioli disappointing
Food is great. Pizza, mains are probably the same quality as other fine Italian restaurants in DC. Althogh the food was great, I'm not sure why I'd need to go back with lots of other choices.
The biggest problem for us was that we were not seated in the main dining room. Rather, we were escorted to the annex dining room upstairs. It felt like an old hospital or something. Very plain walls (okay, yes some expensive photos from a renowned photographer). No, and I mean no architectural details. Just flat walls, no trim on the windows. Plain tables, hard chairs. I felt like we were at the kids table. Plus, all the hard wood and hard surfaces meant it was loud as heck up there. Plus the piped in music just added to the volume.
Again, not sure why I'd go back.
Flavio next time.
Loved the pizza! Also loved the fresh pasta and light marinara sauce.
the food is amazing and wine list incredible! you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu, but go on a week night, sat night was crowded.
I have been to il canale before and didn’t have a problem; however, this time was the worst restaurant experience I’ve ever had. I waited for 20 minutes to be seated and then once I was I waited another 20 minutes for a waiter to come over, which never happened. I ended up having to get up to fill my own water glasses and even after that and speaking to a manager, a waiter STILL NEVER SHOWED UP to wait on our table. After an hour and 15 minutes at the restaurant, we finally got up and left. We were never served and ended up having to go eat dinner elsewhere. Absolute disaster and very disappointing.
Loud, busy, not relaxing at all. Hard to hear conversation at table.
The food is fantastic and we’ve been several times. On the last visit the service was terrible. My husband had to get up twice with his water glass asking for a refill from the bar. The waiter tried several times to clear plates while we were still eating from that plate. Incredibly disappointing visit. .
Third time here. Finally had a great experience. Come in large parties so you can share.
I live in the neighborhood and frequent il Canale often. The service and food are usually very good, but our experience this time was disappointing. Possibly it was because it was January 1, the day after New Years, but the servers did not seem to know what they were doing and were extremely inattentive. Possibly servers who don't usually work there were filling in for others who took the day off, but the experience was less than satisfactory. Our order was incorrect or not brought at all, and the server could not answer basic questions about the menu. Further, we had to consistently flag her down to get her attention/service, and we noticed other diners had to do the same. A group of servers congregated around the computer they use to order and were chatting amongst themselves most of the evening, oblivious to the needs of the customers around them. I will chalk this up to a one-time disappointing experience but if the same poor service is experienced again we will not return.
I made a reservation for NYE at 9:00PM. During the weekday, the restaurant usually closes at 10:30PM. When we got there, our waiter told us that if we want to eat we needed to order food immediately as they are closing the kitchen for the holiday. We ordered apps and meals after she said they wouldn’t be brought out at the same time. The food came out so quickly we barely got through the apps. We ended up moving tables as we didn’t have room for our main dishes. By the time we got to the main dishes, they were cool. There was no notification of early closure on Open Table or their website. We felt extremely rushed and uncomfortable. The staff had tables flipped and ready to close as we still ate. Our waitress was unfriendly and you could tell she wanted to scoot us out as we were one of her last customers. I love the food there and was extremely disappointed.
The food was delicious. The service was great. the area is under construction but easy to find.
Real, authentic Italian pizza. It was delicious - we had LA Regina. The gelato and affogato were amazing, just like the gelato I remember from Sicily. We also had the caprese appetizer, the mozzarella was to die for! Service was prompt. It was quiet with a nice ambience. We will definitely be back!
It was nice to eat in a magnificently Italian restaurant. So professionals amazing costumer service and food
Birthday dinner. Great food and service!
